My wife bought me the 2012 Rand McNally Atlas yesterday. I wasn't expecting much in the way of new roads, but the is a new 20 mile MO 21 freeway outside of St Louis: http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=St...-g&mra=ls&z=11

What an odd place to build a freeway. It doesn't even connect with the rest of the region's network.

A new freeway opens today on the Pennsylvania - West Virginia border (Mon/Fayette Expressway). Pennsylvania State Route 43 runs across it, I don't know the West Virginia number. It connects to Interstate 68 near Morgantown.

Clueless drivers vs. low-clearance bridge

In Durham, NC:

http://11foot8.com/

Yikes, that bridge is hit once per month on average! So often that the railroad company had to install a guard beam in front of it to catch the errant vehicles.

For those who don't think in apostrophes and quotes, the clearance on that bridge is 3.55 meters.

Enjoy!

Haha.....funny stuff. Obviously when you rent one of those things you aren't used to driving trucks, at least that's what I think.

I understand there are a lot of crashes along that route, hence the upgrades.

Yesterday I drove the US 395 from Reno to Carson City and I saw a lots of new viaducts which looked really nice. Are they planning to replace that piece of highway?

That new highway will be I-580.

Apparently the West Virginia number is also 43.

There's a Wikipedia article about it.

The Google Maps imagery of the WV section is very much at odds with the text description, depicting an at-grade facility even though the Wikipedia article describes a controlled access facility, possibly tolled, and possibly with the tolls collected in Pennsylvania! There's a lot of development around the interchange with I-68, but I gather that the Morgantown-oriented flyover ramps are already in, and that the eventual configuration will resemble this interchange found further north in the corridor, at Uniontown.

Another overtall truck oopsie....

This is the US 41/County 'J' interchange (interchange 150) on the northeast corner of Kaukauna, WI. Overpass bridges on the section of US 41 across Appleton's north side, Little Chute and Kaukauna have been frequent 'targets' for overtall vehicles, especially crane/backhoe booms, for as long as I can remember and WisDOT has been busy jacking them all up to interstate-standard clearances over the past 10-15 years. This interchange was just rebuilt to proper clearance last year.

I assume that's downtown White Plains? Didn't know it had buildings that were that tall.

Looks like Seattle will put State Route 99 through a new 9,000' four-lane tunnel through Downtown. Opponents got a vote on the ballot, and the tunnel is passing with a 60/40 majority. The project, run by the State, should start in October. It already has a guaranteed design-build price.

It's not certain yet. But it seems very likely now.

The tunnel will get rid of the existing viaduct along the Elliott Bay waterfront, a old six-block tunnel through the Belltown district, and three blocks of surface highway in the South Lake Union area.

I'm very, very happy about this. I don't drive and want to preserve Downtown streets for transit, pedestrians, bikes, etc., vs. putting through-traffic on streets in the CBD. We're an ithmus.

Opponents are a mix of people who want an aerial version along the central waterfront, or no highway at all, focusing on surface streets, expanding I-5, and transit (all options would hopefully do the latter). It's basically the far right and the far left working together against the middle. Today the middle won.

Some of that looks familiar. (It should: I've been on 23, at least at the north end.) You should get some pics at High Point.

Somewhere up there there's the cutest little town. Might be on route 94. I took a drive to High Point with my parents in September a few years ago, but we wandered a bit. (Just refreshed my memory by looking at Google Maps. I remember we stopped in Newton for lunch, but can't figure out how we got from there to 23.... Sorry for babbling. :-) )
