The oldest parkway in New York, the Bronx River Parkway, turns 89 years today. The first section opened in 1922.

It beat the Harlem River Driveway (now part of the Harlem River Drive) by about a month. http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive...D8415B828EF1D3
That's if we go by the date it was opened to cars; it (the Harlem River Driveway) had existed as a scenic place to race horses and carriages since at least the 1890s.

They are called M*******s for a reason.

Actually I-66 in Virginia has a similar setup in which it is legal for cars to drive on the shoulder during rush hour.

Upper Michigan

Michigan Hwy 64 towards Porcupine Mountains State Park

road inside the park itself

Michigan Hwy 26 towards Keweenaw Peninsula

Most highways in Michigan have rumble strips in the middle. A bit annoying during overtaking but traffic there is so light it wasn't major problem.

US Hwy 41 getting close to Copper Harbor.
Fantastic drive for Mustang

Beginning (or end) of US Hwy 41

Distance to Miami. Signs with such long distances are quite rare in USA.

That's it for today. I'll post more some other day.

Michigan state highways shields

M28 along the Lake Superior

Snowmobile trail crossings are usually easy to spot by band of concrete surface across the highways. I guess it's done to protect road surface.

This is another great drive. M119 towards Harbor Springs

Still in Michigan

In Michigan passing lanes are used quite often. They were very useful especially on heavier trafficked routes in Lower Michigan.
I haven't really seen them in Indiana or Ohio even on quite busy US highways. I guess construction of such features depends from state departments of transportation policies?

Faster than light

End of the road.

State border

Probably last shot of highway in Michigan. I'll post Ohio and Indiana later

Nice pictures from Michigan. That Tunnel of Trees is pretty cool. I've also never heard of or seen snowmobile crossings before, so thanks for mentioning them.

Rumble strips are used extensively on major roads where there's no divider between directions in both Delaware and Pennsylvania. They've found that it cuts down on head-on collisions significantly. I would like to know how much wear & tear it puts on tires, but I appreciate that it warns you of going into opposing traffic or onto the shoulder.

Passing lanes are used a lot in Pennsylvania if 2x2 is not an option for an entire length of a major road.

Great pics geogregor! Makes me want to take a trip to the countryside. I also enjoyed your website very much. It's refreshing to read something other than the typical "...America sucks...".

Well, all this "America sucks" it typical for mentally lazy people whose knowledge is mostly taken from stereotypical TV or internet coverage in home countries.

Yesterday there was article on main Polish newspaper website about Poles being allowed to apply for latest green card lottery after 5 years period when we couldn't apply. Most off comments were very hostile, with a lot of "f" words involved and so on.
Funny thing is most of those people never been to America, they never met any American they probably don't even read much about America. Typical frustration and in some cases jealousy. Of course there is also bunch of typical European brainwashed lefties for whom America is pure devil

Of course US has all sort of problems, some of them quite serious, but every country has them.

By the way thanks for reading my blog. I promise to write something about Michigan when I find a bit of time.
