Many major routes in Europe were first paved with bricks in the mid 1700s. They were called a "chaussee" in Germany and France for instance. Asphalt became commonplace in the late 1800s.

In midwestern states, the bulk of the roads in the early 1930s were unpaved, i.e. improved dirt roads or gravel roads. A massive amount of roads were paved during the 1930s, so that by the early 1940s, most major routes were paved, though there were some U.S. Routes still unpaved in remote areas by 1950. In places like Kansas, Interstate construction began 25 years after roads in the area were paved. (In some places like Utah there were no roads at all before the Interstate era).

Interesting space reservation in the median of the President George Bush Turnpike in Dallas. There appears to be space for an additional 2 lanes each way, it's even paved already.

A southern extension of the Bush Turnpike from I-30 to I-20 in Grand Prairie will open next month.

But I doubt that it's ADA compliant.

Texas style flyover. Who can guess the location? (Hint: look at the name of this thread).

President George Bush Turnpike

A 6-mile segment of the President George Bush Turnpike in Grand Prairie, Texas opens to traffic today. It connects I-20 with I-30 west of Dallas.

This is the current route of the Bush Turnpike:

Not yet.

This map shows the opened section in red:

This extension of the Bush Turnpike will substantially improve mobility in this area, because nearby State Highway 360 is severely saturated at 150,000 - 170,000 vehicles per day on just six lanes. There is quite a bit of commercial activity and employment along the SH 360 corridor.

It's unlikely the Turnpike will be extended further south, there is no decent right of way preserved south of I-20. SH 360 will likely be extended south to Mansfield, the frontage roads for this extension already exist with a right-of-way for the freeway (or tollway) in the median.

Logan airport roads:

I really like signage in most US airports, especially clear signage about rental cars return. Really helpful.

nice photos! Airport interchanges are usually among the most complicated in any metropolitan area.

A new freeway opened in Kansas today.

A 11.1 mile stretch of new US 59 freeway opens to traffic today in Douglas County, Kansas. It begins at the Douglas / Franklin County line and runs north to the southern side of Lawrence, thereby linking Ottawa and Lawrence by freeway.

It will eventually connect with the South Lawrence Trafficway, a new east-west freeway along the southern side of Lawrence. A right-of-way has been preserved to convert the existing K-10 (SLT) into a freeway.

US 460 toll road, Virginia

A new toll road will be constructed parallel to US 460 in southeastern Virginia. It will run from I-295 at Petersburg to US 58 at Suffolk, thereby connecting the Hampton Roads area with the Interstate system, providing an alternative to I-64.

Construction will begin in 2014 and the toll road will open to traffic in 2018. The construction cost is $ 1.4 billion. Tolls are relatively low compared to other projects with $ 3.69 for cars for the entire 55 mile trip.

map:

On a side note, I'm wondering whether they will turn US 58 into a freeway / toll road as well, because of the poor connectivity between Charlotte / Raleigh and Norfolk. US 460 will not be an alternative for traffic to and from North Carolina.

On the connectivity-from-Charlotte-to-Norfolk point, I was looking at the map before I read your last sentence and thinking that a connection from the new toll road and/or I-295 to I-85 would be an obvious thing to do.

Although I guess it's a bit out of the way for the corridor you're talking about....
