Ethnically speaking Cardiff is by a country mile far more of a "melting pot" than anywhere in Wales, when walking through the city centre there is a racial mix and there is always an array of accents to be heard and I'm not just on about students.

None of the above is a bad thing at all, Swansea is similar but to a lesser degree. All I'm saying is that the place you live is mostly so far removed from what the rest of Wales is like, it makes national identity a sort of myth.

Seriously, you haven't been out of Cathays, have you? Not much social housing in Cardiff!

I'm sure we'd find much common ground in our wider view of nationalism, it's potential dangers, it's futility etc, (although I see two key types of nationalism-a 'downtrodden' nationalism that is about asserting ones rights. Broadly speaking this would apply to Ireland, Wales, Croatia etc and an oppressive nationalism in countries under less threat-Imperial Britain, USA, USSR etc.)

Wales is more diverse than you credit it though-check the levels of English immigration, the large Italian communities in the Valleys etc. In fact, given it's population and it's linguistic differences, it's political differences and contrasts between the industrialised south and the hinterlands, an argument could be made that Wales is one of the most diverse nations in europe.

I'm no nationalist, but we are all related to where we are from..our street, our area, our city, our nation, our continent. They are all to be proud of. Nothing wrong whatsoever with being proud to be Welsh-In the balance of contributions given to the world, then Wales is in credit in my opinion.

This is actually a shot of the Neath valley not Swansea so that would make that river Afon Nedd. The mouth of the river is Swansea Bay but its just below Britton ferry and not in Swansea. The town at the bottom of the picture is Glyn Neath.

Ahhh yes.. i was thinking that the Swansea Valley didn't have such a large road. That would be the A465 then.
