Incheon International Airport to become site of Sony Corp's global logistics hub

Incheon International Airport is fast proving itself a truly global logistics hub.

IIAC announced last August 27th that Sony Corp., the Japanese electronics giant, will open its global logistics base at Incheon International Airport Free Trade Zone through its spinoff firm Sony Supplies Chain Solutions Korea. The facilitywill be operated in conjunction with Incheon International Airport Customs Agency.

As a result of Sony's latest decision, approximately 420,000 laptop computers, weighing about 6,000 tons, will be stored annually at Incheon International Airport before shipment to the Americas.

Before, Sony had operated its logistics center at Hong Kongfor products manufactured in Shanghai and Yantai, but the latest move will mean laptop computers slated for export to the Americas will be shipped to and stored at Incheon International Airport. Sony clearly demonstrated its intentions by sending about 14,000 laptop computers to IIAC last August 22nd.

Should operation of its Incheon logistics base be successful, Sony is considering moving its entire logistics center, now in Hong Kong, to Incheon.

Mr. Park Seok-cheon, head of IIAC's Hub Strategy Division, stated that Sony's announcement represents the fruition of IIAC's efforts toward creating a comprehensive logistics environment through establishment of a roundthe- clock customs clearance regime, which IIAC describes asthe 'world's best customs clearance system,' carefully built up by IIAC Customs Agency over the last two years to lend support to the IIAC's strategy to turn the airport into Northeast Asia's logistics hub.

Incheon International Airport Customs Agency formed a joint team whose task is to increase logistics activity in the Free Trade Zone, and attended the Asia/Global logistics hub strategy conference, at which over 100 foreign companies contemplating investment were present. The team also busied itself promoting the excellent systems in place at Incheon International Airport to FTZ tenant firms, KOTRA, and KITA.

IIAC and Customs Agency's hard work paid off in the form of logistics bases set up by firms such as Schenker Korea, Kuehne & Nagel, and Samsung Electronics Company (Giheung Plant), not to mention solid achievements like convincing Dutch semiconductor producer ASML to transfer its global logistics base (which had been divided into two bases at Singapore and Taiwan) to Incheon International Airport. Last but not least, negotiations are currently in progress between IIAC and the Israeli cutting tools firm ISCAR for the establishment of the latter's global logistics base in Incheon International Airport.

SEOUL (AFP) - - South Korea's main flag carrier Korean Air on Wednesday launched a regular cargo flight service to Uzbekistan, with a regular passenger service also due on the route to the central Asian state.

B747-400 cargo planes began operating the three-times-a-week flight linking South Korea's Incheon airport to Uzbekistan's Navoi airport and Italy's Milan airport, the company said in a statement.

B777-200 passenger planes are also ready to launch a separate regular passenger flight service three times a week from September 2 connecting Incheon with Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent, it added.

Korean Air said it also finalised a deal with state-run Uzbekistan Airways to build a logistics centre at Navoi airport and expand business cooperation.

Right now no. HY operates its own flight from Tashkent to Incheon.

Local airline to fly Kaohsiung ( Taiwan ) - Seoul ( Korea ) route

By Jian Chen
Central News Agency

Taiwan's Mandarin Airlines is expected to launch its first Kaohsiung-Seoul direct charter flight at the end of October and begin regularly scheduled service on the route starting in December.

Mandarin Airlines, which will become the only airline currently flying the route, said its new flight service will provide convenience and save time for passengers traveling between the southern city and the Korean capital.

Taiwan's Uni Air had offered regularly scheduled service between the two destinations, but canceled the route Aug. 15.

Mandarin Airlines' first charter flight is scheduled to depart from Kaohsiung International Airport Oct. 29, while the returning flight will take off from Seoul's Incheon International Airport the next day.

The company said that it will fly two charters a week serving only tour groups between Oct. 29 and Nov. 30, but will expand that to four regularly scheduled flights a week, beginning Dec. 1, that will be open to all travelers.

Several domestic travel agencies will collaborate with the airline in organizing group tours to Seoul during the charter period, the carrier said.

China Airlines, Mandarin Airlines' parent company, also noted that it will craft short-term theme tours in Korea to coincide with the new link.

China Airlines said the new route reflects its emphasis on the southern Taiwan market, following an increase in flights between Kaohsiung and Manila Oct. 1.

From 29OCT08 to 30NOV08, the schedule is the following

AE7396 KHH1605 - 1940ICN
AE7397 ICN0900 - 1100KHH
