2009 Q4 Air Cargo Volume Increases by 20%

International cargo volume has increased by 20% in the 4th quarter in comparison to the previous year, which is a positive indicator for the economy. This will lead to a positive trend of more business from cargo airlines originating from Incheon International Airport.

Cargo volume in the first and second quarter of 2009 at Incheon International Airport was down due to the global downturn, falling 20% and 13% respectively. However, the downward trend was reversed in September when cargo volume rebounded. Cargo volume in the third quarter stabilized by only decreasing by 2% while volume in the fourth quarter increased sharply by 20%, giving positive indications of an economic recovery.

As a result, Incheon International Airport was able to exceed its goal of handling 2 million tons of cargo despite the economic downturn last year. Total annual cargo volume for 2009 stands at 2.31 million tons of cargo, which is only 5% less than the previous year.

Despite sagging demand for air cargo services due to the global slowdown, cargo airlines are adding flights or launching new routes at Incheon International Airport.

IIAC announced that the US-based Polar Air Cargo, an all-cargo carrier, will add seven more flights a week to its current service, bringing its total flights to 17 flights per week starting from January 12th.

This upward trend is taking place due to a rapid recovery sweeping through the cargo services industry where carriers are scrambling to meet growing demand. An additional 10,000 tons of cargo was added to the volume handled between the Incheon-U.S. route and this bodes well for the industry.

As an all-cargo carrier wholly owned by Atlas Air, Polar Air Cargo possesses the largest fleet of Boeing 747 freighters. It recorded the best performance among foreign cargo airlines between 2001 and 2008 at Incheon International Airport.

Young Kee Min, Deputy Executive Director of Business Development Group said, "Polar Air Cargo's decision to add more flights will solidify its position as a major cargo airline at Incheon International Airport. We see this as an early sign that more foreign cargo carriers will make a comeback and add flights routed from Incheon International Airport.

Then I fell asleep in her arms.
That was happiness then.
