According to the Incheon Airport's Wikipedia article, in Phase 4 of the expansion plan, a fifth runway for exclusive use by cargo flights will be added to the east of the airport. The cargo-exclusive runway is probably planned for the site of the golf course east of the cargo terminal.

Incheon Airport Named World's Best for 7th Year

Incheon International Airport was named the world's best airport for the seventh year running on Thursday at an event attended by around 500 guests in Singapore. The Airports Council International, an organization of around 1,700 airports around the world, announces its Airport Service Quality ranking every year.

"Incheon International Airport now faces new challenges," ACI secretary general Angela Gittens told the Chosun Ilbo before the award ceremony. It scored 4.95 out of five points, but competition is intensifying, she said, as rivals benchmark its achievements.

Singapore's Changi Airport came second with 4.86 points, while Beijing Capital International Airport overtook Hong Kong's Chek Lap Kok International Airport for the first time to take third place. Beijing Capital ranked fourth last year with 4.67 points, but scored 4.82 points this year. In 2008, it expanded its passenger terminal to handle 82 million visitors a year. Incheon can handle 44 million visitors a year.

Incheon also faces increasing opposition from European airports. "This year may be the last time we award the best airport prize," Gittens said.

The ACI's Asia-Pacific board of directors decided at a meeting on Wednesday to stop awarding the overall prize next year because European airports complained that Incheon dominates it even though there are many outstanding airports in the EU. But ACI will continue to award prizes according to region and airport scale.

It is stated that it takes only 16 minutes for departure process and 12 minutes for arrival process within the airport, which is well above the global standards of, respectively, 60 minutes and 45 minutes. Could this be a reason why ICN has to be rated the Best Airport worldwide by the International Airports Council?

British Airways to launch flights between Seoul Incheon and London Heathrow airports from December 2012

British Airways today announced that it will launch six times a week, non-stop flights between South Korea's Seoul Incheon airport and London's Heathrow airport from December 2, 2012. This announcement comes after British Airways’ parent company, IAG, recently decided to grow its presence in Asia. The tickets for flights between Seoul and London are available from today, informed the airlines release.

The route will be served by the long-range Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, which offers cabins like First and Club World business class, World Traveller Plus premium economy and World Traveller economy class. Flights from Seoul will arrive into the Terminal 5 at Heathrow, which is for the exclusive use of passengers of British Airways and its sister airline, Iberia. “We are tremendously excited about starting direct services to Korea and playing a role in developing closer links between the Korean and UK economies,” said Kevin McQuillan, Regional General Manager, East Asia, British Airways. “Seoul is an important market for both tourism and business and is the biggest origin and destination market in East Asia that we do not currently fly to,” McQuillan added.

Vishal Sinha, Country Manager, Japan & Korea, British Airways, said, “British Airways is looking forward to expanding its footprint in Asia, and we are honoured to be welcoming travellers from Korea on board our aircraft. Customers will experience our quintessentially British style of premium service on board. Those going onward from London will connect conveniently at our home, Terminal 5, to a wide range of destinations on our extensive European and African route network.”

The release added that British Airways will be the only airline to offer premium economy seating between London and Seoul, and will also be the only member of the oneworld alliance to serve the route.
