Korea will open in 2018 its National Aviation Museum on the grounds of the Gimpo Airport.

Here is an English language article about the project :

Quote:
S. Korea set to build national aviation museum

South Korea plans to open a national aviation museum by 2018 to promote the country's aviation history and to help lead more young people into related careers, the transport ministry said Thursday.

The envisioned museum will be built on the premises of Gimpo International Airport, just west of Seoul, to ensure easy access via public transportation and allow visitors to get career experience from people working in the aviation industry, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The government will spend 93.4 billion won (US$78.9 million) to construct the museum, the first of its kind in South Korea.

Its design will be decided through a public contest to be held next month, the ministry said.

"We will build the museum to promote the history, current status and future of South Korea's aviation industry," a ministry official said. "It will inspire young people who pursue careers in this field."

South Korea has been a member of the U.S.-based International Civil Aviation Organization since 1952, and has received recognition from the international aviation community as it has been named a council member of the agency for five consecutive terms.

I found these pictures on a forum today, I'm not sure it's the final design of the project, but it very well might be.

Incheon airport under fire for luggage mishandling

Incheon International Airport is drawing criticism for causing inconvenience to passengers for a couple of days due to the failure of its baggage-handling system.

Incheon International Airport Corp. (IIAC) said Tuesday that the system failed Sunday, causing delays to 169 flights and the blockage of 5,200 pieces of passengers' luggage for several hours. Some airplanes left the airport that day without carrying their passengers' luggage. The airport belatedly sent the baggage to their destinations through Monday evening.

The corporation said that the number of passengers who traveled through the airport reached 176,432 on the day of the malfunction, the largest number since the airport's opening. "The large number of passengers contributed to the baggage-handling problem, along with a lack of staff who deal with the luggage," an IIAC official said.

The baggage-handling system can deal with up to 12,600 pieces of luggage per hour during peak time. On Sunday, only 7,500 pieces were processed through the system, far below its maximum capacity. The airport said that it had a larger-than-usual number of poorly wrapped packages such as boxes and plastic bags, leading to classification errors.

"In the case of such packages, it is hard for the classification system to sort them, so our staff usually check and send them in the right direction on the conveyor belt lines. But on that day, we didn't have enough people there," he said.

The Airline Operations Committee (AOC) consisting of 67 airlines operating at Incheon may seek compensation for damages from the delays, if customers want to file a suit.

The IIAC said that it will brace for more passengers who are expected to travel through the airport during the Lunar New Year holiday, which falls on Feb. 8.

"We will deploy additional personnel for baggage-handling on peak travel days and will not repeat this again," the official said. "We will collaborate closely with airlines and handling companies and make contingency plans."

The airport has a reputation as one of the world's best, with strong evaluations for its services including baggage claim services. But this large-scale system failure has tarnished the airport which topped the global ranking for Airport Service Quality in a survey conducted by the Airports Council International in 2014 for the 10th year in a row.

To cope with rising passenger numbers, the corporation is now building its second terminal, scheduled for completion by 2017. When the terminal is completed, the airport is expected to accommodate up to 62 million passengers a year.

Also, the leadership vacuum at the IIAC has been blamed for this situation, causing lax management. Park Wan-su who served as IIAC CEO resigned after 14 months to run in the general election in April on the ruling Saenuri Party ticket in a Changwon-Uichang constituency in South Gyeongsang Province.

Opening of the Incheon Airport Maglev scheduled for February 3rd

The opening, delayed for almost 3 years, is now scheduled for this Wednesday. The line will become the 3rd commercial Maglev Line in the world.

The line is 6.1 km long, with 6 stops and heads Southwest from the Airport to Yongyu, going through the airport parking lot, the airport business district and its casino... but there won't be much else on the line.

There are plans for 2 extensions. A 9.7 extension that would link the line with the 2nd terminal, and a 37.4 further extension to complete the loop around the Yeongjong island where the airport is located.

From what I understand, the line will not be integrated (at least for now) with the rest of the Seoul Metropolitan Subway System and will function independantly.

Here is a video simulation of the line

The 2nd terminal is now "topped out"(whatever that means for an airport). Still a year and a half of construction before opening next year

Quote:
Incheon International Airport held a topping-out ceremony on Tuesday for its second terminal, set to open next year, the airport announced.

A topping-out ceremony commemorates the completion of the framework of a new building by fitting the last piece of the structure on top.

The terminal, however, will not be open to the public until the end of 2017, just ahead of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

“Incheon Airport will establish itself as a leading global airport through top-notch safety, efficiency and convenience after the successful opening of the second terminal next year,” said Incheon International Airport Corp. CEO Chung Il-young.

As the centerpiece of Incheon International Airport’s 3 Phase Construction Project, the airport’s second terminal began construction in September 2013.

The 3 Phase Project -- estimated to cost up to 5 trillion won ($4.35 billion) -- was launched in efforts to expand the infrastructure of the nation’s largest airport to support the steadily increasing passengers and cargo.

Once the project is complete, Incheon International Airport will be able to service 72 million passengers and 5.8 million tons of cargo annually.
