Self-serve immigration booth installed for tourists’ convenience

Incheon International Airport begins a test-run of unmanned immigration booths from Thursday (June 26) for the convenience of outward bound tourists, the Ministry of Justice announced on Wednesday (June 25).

In the past, Korean travelers departing from Korea had to present their passport to immigration officers who would permit or reject their overseas travel.

Thanks to a newly installed auto immigration booth, now Korean nationals aged 17 or over and flight attendants or crews with non-Korean nationality can use this service.

To use this system, a person needs to register their passport, the fingerprints of both hands and take a picture of their face at the auto immigration registration center located at check-in counter F on the third floor of the airport. After that, they just need to place their passport on the scanner installed at the unmanned immigration booth.

The Ministry of Justice said its immigration staff will receive registrations from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day at Incheon International Airport.

The ministry and Incheon International Airport plan to expand the service to include overseas tourists and to other airports and ports nationwide in the near future.

Star Alliance Members 'Move Under One Roof'

By Kim Rahn
Staff Reporter

Star Alliance, of which Asiana Airlines is a member, has now exclusively occupied the western wing of Incheon International Airport.

The celebration ceremony took place Thursday, with dignitaries, including Star Alliance CEO Jaan Albrecht, Asiana Airlines President Kang Joo-an, and representatives of the various alliance member carriers, participating.

The alliance calls the collocation at one terminal "Move Under One Roof (MuoR),'' which enables its members to provide joint services and use facilities together.

The MuoR follows the opening of new facilities and rearrangement of check-in counters in June at the airport. Asiana Airlines and other Star Alliance members use the western parts of the terminal, called "Star Check-in Zone,'' while Korean Air and other Sky Team members use the other parts.

The collocation of all the Star Alliance members leads to faster connections between flights, as well as faster check-in and baggage claims in the Star Check-in Zone and Common Baggage Service Facility.

In the case of Narita International Airport in Tokyo, which adopted MuoR in June 2006, transfer time between flights operated by Star Alliance members was almost halved _ the average transfer time between international flights was reduced to 45 minutes from the previous 110 minutes.

The alliance members can also save costs by sharing facilities such as lounges and kiosks, while passengers can enjoy joint frequent flyer mile programs.

Ten Star Alliance members using Incheon airport are: Asiana, Air Canada, Air China, All Nippon Airways, Lufthansa, Shanghai Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, United Airlines and Turkish Airways. They provide services from Incheon with 1,500 departures per week.

Kang of Asiana said, "We will be able to cut costs by sharing Star Alliance facilities through MuoR as well as provide more convenient services to Star Alliance passengers. It will be an opportunity to upgrade our customer service.''

Incheon is the eighth airport to adopt MuoR, following Narita, Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Heathrow Airport in London, Miami International Airport in Miami, Beijing Capital International Airport in Beijing, Pudong International Airport in Shanghai, and Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris.

A total of 21 carriers belong to Star Alliance. They fly to 975 cities in 162 countries, with 18,100 flights per day. They carry 460 million passengers per year.

I absolutely love ICN. Best airport in the world, I love being there! These pics are simply amazing! By the way, I rather like Asiana's new livery. Though I do hope they keep about 1/4 of their fleet in old colors cause I like that one too.

S.Korea to sell 49 pct stake in Incheon Airport

SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea will put a 49 percent stake in state-owned Incheon International Airport Corp up for sale, a government ministry said on Monday, as part of a drive to reform state-run companies.

The Ministry of Strategy and Finance also said in a statement that it would announce detailed plans by the end of August for the sale of shares in Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co Ltd (042660.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) and 13 other companies bailed out by public funds.

"(The government) will sell a 49 percent stake in Incheon International Airport, which includes a strategic tie-up with a foreign airport operator to secure international competitiveness," the statement said.

But it did not give a timeframe.

The announcement is seen as a first step for President Lee Myung-bak's ambitious reform plans, which have been delayed due to massive protests against a U.S. beef import deal that turned into wider anti-government demonstrations.

Korea National Housing Corp, which builds and manages public housing, will be merged with Korea Land Corp because of overlaps in their businesses, the statement said.

A number of other state-run companies, including the Korea Tourism Organisation and Korea National Oil Corp, will shed or scale down non-core assets such as duty-free shops and golf courses, it added.
