I don't think they are otaku, but rather ignorant. E.g. in Germany history lesson books from fifth grade to abitur (high school graduation) have altogether like 10 pages about China and Japan and normaly teachers would just skip these few pages.

Unfortunately, it's not a joke. The first time it was a fellow student at high school who argued with me about the origin of hanzi, but that was many, many, many moons ago. But just two weeks in a café in Hamburg I was sitting next to a bunch of electronic engineers. We came into a conversation and talked about job and stuffs. When he knew that I speak fluently Chinese, he asked me about the origin of hanzi.

As you can see, there is a widespread of ingorance in Europe despite our perceived better education and free flow of information in comparison to China.

Simfox, you are not a native Chinese, but you can understand the difference of penjing and bonsai. I admire your broad knowledge in different cultures.
True.

It's just pronunciation.

Originated from China arprox. 2000 years ago, came to Korea around 7th~13th century via Tang~Song Dynasty. Then reached Japan around 1300s.

They are going to rebuild a Manchu palace in Hetuala old town (Fushun), featuring authentic Manchu culture including the famed Eight banners millitary ceremony.
