The airport is already operational although some works are still taking place... This is an investment of aprox. 70-80 mil euros so far .. Last year Sibiu (about 160 000 inhabitants) was the European Capital of Culture.. having 1.5 mil tourists! |

Some ... promising ... news ...Government of Romania - Press office - 13.10.2007 This afternoon, Prime Minister Calin Popescu - Tariceanu has met with the Iasi county's local authorities and heads of decontrated services whom he requested to mobilise in order to accelerate the measures necessary to access the European funds, and avoid the danger of missing them. The Head of the Government has solicited the full rally of the representatives of the local leadership of the Agency for Payments and Interventions in Agriculture for all current delays to be covered within the one month deadline specified by the European Commission. „We still have a month of efforts in which I request you not to spare any Saturday or Sunday since exceptional measures are needed in exceptional situations ”, Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu has stated, mentioning that he will not hesitate to apply sanctions if this is necessary. Prime Minister has also drawn the attention on the fact that the responsibility in this field falls both to APIA and local authorities of each county. The Head of the Government has voiced his availability to support the local authorities' efforts and has urged them to get involved and oversee the solving of substance problems, while putting aside the sterile political rows which lead to useless waste of energies. „I want to be informed about the problems you encounter. If you encounter problems and you exhaust all your action possibilities, you may appeal to me ”, Prime Minister has added. He reckons that Iasi County has a real potential which should be capitalized in order to turn this county and the entire Moldova into an attractive area for investors. Under these circumstances, the Head of the Government has especially mentioned the projects of infrastructure development and modernisation in the transportation, health, education and research fields. Among these, the Head of the Executive has appreciated as essential, the development and modernisation of Iasi Airport, Pan European IX Corridor, which will cross Moldova from north to south and connect the economy of the Moldova counties and Romania to the south and north of Europe, through a road section linked with Brasov-Oradea Motorway. On the very Saturday, Prime Minister has visited a plant from Iasi industrial platform, whose main activity is PET recycling and has appreciated this investment for its beneficial influence on environment protection and job creation.

Finally some plans for Iaşi and Timişoara airports. These cities deserve bigger and more modern airports. At least Iaşi airport is currently a piece of junk.

Some news about Cluj airport..

Some news about Bucharest new airport..
South Bucharest muted for third airport Minister of Transport Ludovic Orban has said the Capital’s local authorities will decide the location of a new airport in south Bucharest. The proposed areas include Popesti Leordeni, 1 Decembrie and Adunatii Copaceni. The Minister said the construction of the airport should be finished in two years after works start. Traffic in Baneasa Airport Aurel Vlaicu will be restricted due to the real estate boom in north Bucharest and environment regulations. This means there is a massive need for a new international airport. Baneasa Airport will remain open for small planes, helicopters, private and business jets. |

Romanian PM wants to close airport and move its low-cost flights to Bucharest's main one
19 September 2008 BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) - Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu has proposed closing Bucharest's No. 2 commercial airport and moving all its flights to the capital's main one. Tariceanu said Thursday that the change would end noise and street traffic problems around Baneasa airport, which is located in Bucharest, near where the bulk of the capital's business and residential development has occurred in recent years. He told reporters that Henri Coanda airport, about 20 kilometers (13 miles) north of the city center, could easily handle all Baneasa's flights, including its many low-cost ones. He asked Transportation Minister Ludovic Orban to facilitate the move, but did not indicate when it could happen. Tariceanu said Baneasa could be used by Romaero S.A., a company that maintains and repairs civil and military transport aircraft. Currently, dozens of budget flights use the Baneasa Airport every day, benefiting from its closeness to downtown Bucharest. The budget carrier Wizz Air, which has daily flights to European cities from Baneasa, said it would not comment on the prime minister's proposal until it had been officially notified about it. Tariceanu said the noise of takeoffs and landings is disturbing residents who live near Baneasa -- which has limited parking facilities -- and that the airport's customers are causing traffic jams on the area's roads. "I believe that due to the urban development of Bucharest, an airport can't survive in the middle of town. This is a natural consequence of the city's development," the prime minister said. Bucharest is a fast-growing city, and the country's economic growth is expected to be about 8 percent this year. Some 2 million Romanians work in Western Europe, and they often use low-cost carriers to fly to and from their home country. |
