I'm not familiar with this airfield, but those buildings are almost certainly for purposes such as cargo or storage of airside equipment such as aircraft steps, baggage trolleys and other ground handling items.

Prior to closure, was there any other scheduled flights apart from the Tarom feeder flights to/from Bucharest?

November 18, 2015

Quote:

Airbus Helicopters Industries has inaugurated a new 10,000 sqm factory in Brasov, company representatives inform. The factory is designed to host the production of the H215 helicopter, the company’s newest model.

“The H215 has a strategic importance for Airbus Helicopters and enables us to provide customers the best helicopter for their needs, with extremely competitive direct operating costs and maintenance,” said Guillaume Faury, Airbus Helicopters CEO. “Through this extended partnership with Romania, an important member of EU and NATO, we will ensure that these legendary heavy helicopters with two engines are more economical than ever on current and emerging markets,” he added.

Employing 300 people, the Brasov unit production line capacity reaches up to 15 aircrafts a year, with the first H215 expected to be produced in 2017.

“This new 100 percent industrial center of Airbus Helicopters is a valorization of the success stories we have in heavy aircraft maintenance in Romania and cooperation for over 40 years with this country. Our goal is to provide customers a completely new concept and modern business by proposing a new definition of standard equipment for fast production times and better purchase prices,” said Serge Durand, managing director of Airbus Helicopters Industries.

Airbus Helicopters is a division of Airbus Group, producing civilian and military helicopters. The company has a fleet of 12,000 helicopters operated by 3,000 clients in 152 countries. With 23,000 employees globally, the group generated EUR 6.5 billion turnover in 2014.

Ryanair to open Bucharest base from end of October

Tuesday 16 February 2016 13.47

Quote:
Ryanair has announced it will open a new base at Bucharest Airport from 30 October with an investment of €268m, according to the airline.

It will base three aircraft in Bucharest, adding new routes to Athens and Timisoara.

Ryanair will also increase capacity on its existing routes from the airport, including on routes to Dublin and Milan.

The enhanced schedule is expected to see 1.4 million Ryanair passengers pass through the airport annually and increase Ryanair traffic at Bucharest by 75%.

Currently the airline flies to Bucharest from nine airports.

It comes as Ryanair announced it carried 7.5 million passengers in January and 89% of its flights were on time for the month.

However, the number of Ryanair complaints for last month nearly doubled (from 0.78 to 1.49 per 1,000 passengers) when compared to the same period in 2015.

While 'bag complaints' at the airline also rose year-on-year in January (from 0.56 to 0.64 complaints per 1,000 passengers).

Romanian airline Blue Air plans to carry over 4 mln passengers in 2017
27 Jan 2017
Quote:
Romanian low-cost airline Blue Air carried 3.59 million passengers in 2016, up 165% compared to 2014, and plans to pass the threshold of four million passengers in 2017, the company announced.

The airline launched 30 new routes in 2016 and announced 24 new routes for this year.

Blue Air will have eight operational bases in 2017, after the inauguration of the ones in Liverpool and Constanta seaside resort. The company currently has six operational bases, in Bucharest, Bacau, Cluj-Napoca, Iasi, Larnaca, and Torino.

The airline operated over 13,100 flights last year, 168% more than in 2014, according to a statement from Blue Air. The company also invested in its fleet, which is now made of 24 aircraft, up from only 11 aircraft two years ago.

Blue Air ended 2016 with more than 990 employees, up from 676 at the end of 2015. Most of them are Romanians, with only 8.4% being foreigners.

Blue Air is the second-biggest airline in Romania by the number of passengers carried, after Hungarian Wizz Air, which carried 5.5 million passengers to and from Romania in 2016, but ahead of state-owned Romanian airline Tarom, which carried some 2.1 million passengers.

The Romanian airline started its activity 12 years ago, and currently operates more than 90 routes to Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Italy, UK, Portugal, Romania, Sweden, and Spain.

Romanian airline wants five flights a week to China, the U.S.

Quote:
Romania’s state-owned airline Tarom will operate four or five flights a week to China and the U.S., given that there is demand on the market, the company’s commercial director Sorin Georgescu said on Wednesday after the event organized to present the second Boeing 737-800 aircraft leased by Tarom.

The state airline received the first Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft last week.

“The flights announced to New York and Beijing can be cost-effective. There is demand on the market. However, we will not be able to operate only two flights a week. The minimum will be four or five flights per week in both directions, if not one per day,” Georgescu said, reports local Mediafax.

The flight frequency is important in the context of existing competition. For example, there are two or three flights per day from Istanbul and Frankfurt to the U.S, he explained.

Tarom representatives are currently working on getting the slots to open the routes to China and the U.S., said Transport Minister Razvan Cuc.

The two new Boeing aircraft will increase the airline’s transport capacity by 20%, according to the minister. They are both leased for 10 years, replacing the two A310 models removed from the airline’s fleet last year.

Main Bucharest airport to expand terminals with over EUR 800 mln
Quote:
Bucharest’s main airport Otopeni could expand in two stages, with an investment estimated at EUR 818.5 million.

The work would allow the airport to increase its takeover capacity to over 20 million passengers, double compared to the current level, reports Profit.ro. The costs exclude expropriations, which the Economy Ministry has to pay.

Expansion work could begin in 2022, and each of the stages would last three years, according to the Bucharest Airports National Company, which manages the Otopeni and Baneasa airports in Bucharest. The Otopeni airport would have 57 gates and would be able to take over 1,500 passengers an hour or 12 million passengers per year.

Company representatives met yesterday with portfolio investors at a meeting organized by the investment fund Fondul Proprietatea, which has a stake of 20% in the National Company Bucharest Airports.
