NAGPUR: Vidarbha's dream irrigation project, Gosikhurd, which encountered many roadblocks in the past few years due to lack of funds is likely to be completed by 2012. The central government has approved
nearly Rs 7,777 crores for the project.

The Centre had recently declared Gosikhurd as a national asset and decided to provide nearly 90 % of the funds for the project. The technical advisory committee (TAC) of the Central Water Commission recently approved the revised budget of Rs 7,777 crore for the project.

The project envisages construction of a 11.35 km long earthen dam with gated spillway across Wainganga river near Gosikhurd village. Although work started in 1981, it gained momentum only after it got forest clearance and was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi on April 22, 1988.

Seven companies have evinced interest in the Rs-600 crore Medical Health City project proposed by the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC).

Among these the Reliance group, IVRCL, Delhi's Value group, Hinduja National Hospital of Mumbai, and Apollo Hospitals have already submitted tenders, which will be opened after April 16.

Though Kolhapur has a number of private hospitals and one government hospital, it lacks a full-fledged hospital that could offer emergency care.

The KMC has earmarked 19 acres for the proposed project, which would be given on a lease basis.

Spencer’s Retail of the RPG Group is planning to open eight new retail outlets at prime locations in Nashik, in the next four-five months.

The company would open the new outlets in two phases. In the first phase within a month, three outlets would come up at Tidke colony, Trimurti Chowk and Indira Nagar. The rest would be opened within the next four-five months, company sources said.

The company is in the process of identifying properties in prime locations of the city. It has already identified properties at Nashik Road and Bhabha Nagar.

These outlets will have carpet areas ranging from 3,000 sft to 4,000 sft, they said refusing to divulge financial details.

Spencer’s Retail has around 400 retail outlets in 65 cities across the country.

The commerce ministry has approved the proposal of Nashik Industrial Co-operative Estate (NICE) to set up an engineering cluster at Nashik under the Industrial Infrastructure Upgradation Scheme.

A special purpose vehicle — Nashik Engineering Cluster — has been formed with NICE president Vikram Sarda as chairman and commissioner of Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) Vilas Thakur as vice-chairman.

Informing about the project, Sarada said, “Around 1,650 engineering and electrical industries are scattered in and around Nashik. Considering the strong base of engineering and electrical industries here and with an aim to make local small-scale industries (SSIs) globally competitive, NICE took the initiative of forming the engineering cluster.”

The project, to cost Rs 67 crore, would come up on 4 acres with a built-up area of 100,000 sft in Ambad areas of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation. It is expected to be completed in one year. Of the Rs 67 crore, the Centre will provide Rs 50 crore, while NICE and NMC will contribute Rs 9.26 crore and Rs 8 crore, respectively.

The cluster would provide facilities including CAD/CAM/CAE centre, rapid prototyping, CNC machining centre, specialised heat treatment, testing facility, calibration centre and common facilities. The CAD/CAM/CAE training centre would start within two months in the NICE premises.

Maharashtra govt proposes India's first Sea World

KANKAVLI: Adventure tourists may have something to cheer as Maharashtra government proposes to set up the country's first and one of the biggest `Sea Worlds' to showcase marine life in Sindhudurg district here.

Sarang Kulkarni, Marine Biologist and consultant to Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has prepared a concept paper for the ambitious Rs 700 crore project for which 45 acre land has already been identified.

"The master plan will take one to two years as it has to be foolproof before the actual implementation begins," Kulkarni told PTI.

"The Sea World will have the longest tunnel in the world and will showcase Konkan's rich marine life through it. It will also have the world's largest water quantity which is about ten million gallons," Kulkarni said, adding that he has held consultations with the state government in taking the project forward

Ratnagiri atomic power plant gets ‘green’ light

This could bring some cheer to a power-starved country reeling under summer heat. A biodiversity survey conducted to assess the environmental impact of the proposed 10,000 mw Jaitapur atomic power plant appears to have given the ‘green light’ to it.

The Rs 50,000-crore plant, to be the country’s biggest once commissioned, will come up at Madban Village in Rajapur Taluka of Ratnagiri district along the Konkan coast. Expected to be a third generation design, most likely a European pressurised water reactor (EPR) type, the pant would have benefited from the Indo-US civilian nuclear co-operation deal, which, at the moment, appears to be going nowhere.

However, with or without any deal with the US, the Indian nuclear establishment is planning to go ahead with the project

Maytas Infra bags 120Mw power order in Maharashtra

Hyderabad-based construction and infrastructure development company, Maytas Infra Ltd, has been awarded the country's first washery reject coal-based power project contract of 120Mw capacity. The project would be set up in Chandrapur district in Vidarbha region of Maharashtra.

To be executed on a total engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis at an estimated cost of Rs 650 crore, the project would be completed in two phases with the first 60Mw to be completed in 20 months and the second 60Mw in 22 months.

Filmcity to come up in Nashik

NASHIK: The Maharashtra Government, along with the Nashik Municipal Corporation, is planning to set up a 150-acre Filmcity in Nashik district, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Chaggan Bhujbal said.

"The land is available at Eklahare, about 15 kms from here and we are trying to take up the Rs 100 crore film city project," said Bhujbal during the inauguration of the first two-day International Film Festival here on Saturday.

Ship builder seeks $10 million funding for dream project in Maharashtra

Promoter of 'Alanzo I' , the largest wooden ship in the world that is being recreated in a shipyard in Thane district of Maharasthra, is seeking private equity investors or a project partner to fund $10 million for the project.

Alanzo I, a dream project of Hamburg-born Alanzo Langecker who has conceptualised it, is getting ready at Classicraft Marine Works shipyard in Ghodbunder in Thane. The ship is a reproduction of a historic and pirate wooden ship 'The Red Dragon' built sometimes during 1805-1834. Build to designs of traditional Chinese wooden ships belonging to the fleet of the 15th century Chinese Admiral Zheng He, the ship is being built using timber including teak, balau, sal, kapur and babool.

Designs for the ship were drawn up by Mumbai-based CyberMarine Knowledge Systems, with interiors by Indian designer Fali Unwalla at the behest of Mr Langecker.

Major shareholders of Club Alanzo VIP Cruises GmbH, Mr Langecker and his partner Juergen Wolff, say that the company has explored funding through the German KG model of financing. It is now set its sights on private equity finance or a project partner from the US, UK, Middle East or India.

The ship, which is estimated to cost euro 150 million, will have a draught of only 3 m, making it access areas which are inaccessible to larger ships.

Measuring 49.5 m long and 9.8 m across the beam, the 600 gt Alanzo I will be able to carry 17 crew and 12 passengers in nine cabins. Equipped with two 450 BHP Volvo D16 diesel engines, two propellers and one bow thruster, the new vessel will offer outstanding manoeuvrability as well as "excellent handling under sail". Its cabins will include two 540 sq ft owners' cabins, and a further seven 320 sq ft cabins, as well as a mess room, a salon and a roof restaurant. Cabins are to be decorated in a variety of styles, ranging from Japanese to Indian, Moroccan and Baroque.

Every cabin follows individual designs and "there is not a standard suite," said Mr Langecker.
Mr Wolff said, "Traditional construction technique is used for construction of this fully air-conditioned wooden cruise ship. It is treated with fire retardant chemicals to meet international class requirements equipped with the latest electronic gadgets and navigation equipments on board; the hull of the ship is built as per standards of the International Maritime Organisation with three masts and a large sail area, powered by engine and sail with a speed of 10 knots per hour.

Mumbai, June 01 Govt to benefit by way of premium charged on additional FSI, says CM

The State Government has decided to redesign the skyline of townships by doubling the Floor Space Index for such projects all over Maharashtra.

The state has increased the FSI (ratio of permissible built-up area to plot area) for townships from 0.5 to 1. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh at the inaugural function of the Nanded city township in Pune on Sunday.

“On Saturday evening, I signed on the file for raising the FSI to 1. The government will make some money by way of a premium charged on the additional FSI,” said Deshmukh.

Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar, who was also present, said that in the event of the Government deciding to increase the township FSI to 1.5 in future, the houses generated out of the additional FSI should be used for low-cost housing.

Principal Secretary for urban development TC Benjamin clarified that as in the case of the additional 0.33 FSI granted for Mumbai suburbs recently, the premium charged for the extra FSI for townships would be based on ready reckoner rates.

He added that the money that is earned from the townships would be ploughed into improving the infrastructure in cities.

The special township policy allows private developers to develop a township along with all necessary infrastructure and amenities in any composite plot of over 100 acres. The State Government has so far approved only a handful of township proposals. Less than a hundred proposals for township projects in and around cities like Mumbai, Pune, Nashik and Nagpur are still awaiting government’s nod.
“We decided on this move following demands from developers who pointed out that a project doesn’t become financially viable unless there is a certain density of population in the township. Like in the case of the earlier FSI policy for townships, even now the condition is that 50% of the area is to be kept open to sky. The FSI can be consumed by going vertical,” said Benjamin.

In Mumbai, developers like Hiranandani builders, Lodha group and Nirmal lifestyle are among the many in the queue for getting their projects approved.

“It is a welcome move. If one looks at it logically, in areas where a municipal corporation provides for the infrastructure, the FSI is more. On the other hand, in townships where developers have to take care of all these needs instead of incentivising the FSI, it has been far less,” said Dharmesh Jain, chairman and managing director of Nirmal Lifestyle, which has announced two township projects in Mumbai and one in Pune and Panvel each.

According to former chief planner of MMRDA VK Phatak, increasing the FSI in the special townships won’t have an immediate impact on the density of population in cities as these are at a distance “Only those who own automobiles can afford to live in townships. However, some future growth may get diverted to these townships,” he said.

Orbit Corp plans township near Mumbai

Real estate firm Orbit Corp Ltd expects to add new projects worth 8-10 billion rupees in 2008/09, as it sees strong demand for redevelopment projects in South Mumbai, its main area of operation.

The developer, focussed on selling high-end apartments and offices in the city's affluent areas, sees revenue growing at least 25 percent this fiscal, despite reports of a demand slowdown in Mumbai, its finance head said on Tuesday.

The company is now leveraging on the demand to set up beachfront projects further up along the Mumbai coastline, and is also acquiring land for a 200-acre coastal township at Mandwa, south of Mumbai, Ramashrya Yadav said.

MUMBAI: The industrial town of Jalgaon in Maharashtra, the hometown of President Pratibha Patil, will be connected by air to the rest of the country by 2010, an official said.

At a tripartite meeting held here between the state government, Maharashtra Airport Development Corporation (MADC) and Jalgaon district authorities Tuesday evening, it was decided that an airport would be established in the town, about 400 km from Mumbai, within two years.

Jalgaon district collector Kunal Kumar told IANS: "We decided on the time line of the project. The airport will be operational 2010."

He added that various strategies for the technical and financial aspect of the prestigious project were also chalked out at the meeting.

The Jalgaon Airport Company Limited, an entity formed by MADC and chaired by Kumar, will soon acquire land for the airport.

An official said the Jalgaon airport is likely to be built on the lines of the Kochi International Airport, one of the country's most successful airport projects based on public-private partnership.

MADC genral manager Ramesh Yaul said: "Various airport models like Kochi, Bangalore and Hyderabad are being studied, so that we can have the best passenger, infrastructural and aeronautical facilities."

Yaul said the company will be looking for funding from private players like Jain Irrigation, which has a strong foothold in area.

MADC has suggested that the proposed airport would require 350 hectares of land with at least 3,200 metres of runway length and 45 metres breadth and one taxiway.

Apart from Jalgaon, MADC will soon develop Sholapur, Shirdi and an international airport in Pune.
Initially, the government had drawn a map for constructing at least seven new airports across the state.

However, with most airlines cutting capacity and putting expansion plans on the back burner due to skyrocketing fuel costs, the state has been forced to roll back plans for airports at Phaltan, Dhule, Karad and Chandrapur.

Mumbai,June 22 (PTI) Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, who was the target of MNS president Raj Thackeray's anti-North Indian tirade, is all set to produce a Marathi film under his banner "A B Corp".
The yet untitled film is in pre-production stage and will be directed by Umesh Kulkarni whose last movie "Valu" produced by Subhash Ghai received critical and box office acclaim.

Talking to PTI here, Kulkarni, an alumni of FTII said Jaya Bachchan, his senior in the Institute had seen his diploma film 'Girni' .

"She liked it very much and we kept in touch. After 'Valu', we were exploring possibility of working together," he added.

Kulkarni said, "I showed Jayaji, the very first feature film script of my life. She liked it. Myself, Jayaji and A B Corp CEO Wing commander Ramesh Pulapaka decided that the film should be made in Marathi," he added.

Refusing to divulge more details, Kulkarni said the film is a contemporary story about the spiritual way of looking at life and the protagonist is a 12 year old boy.

"This is not a children's movie," he asserted.

Kulkarni said the film will go on floor in August-September this year. The cast of the film is yet to be finalised.

"The shooting will take place in Pune and some other locations in the state," he added. PTI

Maharashtra to enact SEZ law

The Maharashtra Government is in the process of enacting its own SEZ law to deal with state- specific issues like land acquisition, faced by developers of the tax-free enclaves.

The Centre has already cleared the draft bill of the SEZ Act of the Maharashtra government, Commerce Secretary G K Pillai informed SEZ developers.

Most of the issues pertaining to SEZs in the state would be taken care of once the SEZ Act is implemented.

Addressing a meeting of the Export Promotion Council for EoUs and SEZs in Mumbai last week, Pillai said the Centre, on its part, is looking into the issue of export duty on steel which is taken into the SEZs from the domestic tariff area.

"We are aware of this. It is a problem and we are making an attempt to resolve this," the Commerce Secretary said.

Other demands from developers like extension of service tax exemptions would be placed before the empowered Group of Ministers. Pillai did not specify as to when the eGom, headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, would meet.

Maharashtra has, so far, got 89 SEZs with formal approval, 37 with in-principle clearance and 27 notified zones. It tops the list in the country with the maximum amount of the tax-free enclaves, major among them being by Wipro, Infosys, Reliance Infocomm, Bajaj Auto, Hiranandani, Navi Mumbai and Ispat.

Pillai further said based on the representations received from the developers, the Department of Commerce was considering bringing amendments in the SEZ Rules to simplify procedures for development of SEZs in the country.
