Maybe because it's cheaper and they are going for solar and wind as well but these take a lot of money and time and the aim here is to be self reliant so probably that's why.

Rajasthan to emerge as hub for market research

Quote:
With Rajasthan fast emerging as an industrial and educational hub, global market research companies are now eyeing the desert state for setting up their research and development activities.

Brett research Ltd, a London-based research firm, is to start providing six months training in Rajasthan for management graduate students to enable them entry in the emerging field of market research, which is getting momentum worldwide post recession.

According to Punit Sharma, Team Leader South-East Asia, Brett research, market research is a new trend in India, and investors worldwide are focusing on conducting research post-recession to minimise risks, identify opportunities and offer best products or services that are focussed and well targeted.

Small scale industries in Europe and UK now prefer market research before finally launching product or services.

"The trend of market research is emerging in India which is a good career opportunity that offers high salary packages to management graduates," Sharma said.

Brett research conducts market research training in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and China. "Our next destination is Jaipur in India," Sharma said announcing his company plans to invest in the country by next year.

Over 10 thousand management students pass out from a number of government and deemed universities in Rajasthan every year.

"I have approached several management colleges of the state and the initial response is good. The six months paid training, which we plan to start from November this year will be equally divided in two modes- online and practical. Later, we would recruit candidates for Jaipur office, which would be operational from next fiscal year," he said.

Rajasthan is fast growing into the country's new commerce and industrial hub, with the central government having approved of setting up a manufacturing and investment zone.

"This will be our first training in India due to availability of required human resource and bright future perspective of state’s industrial growth and possibility of foreign investment in the state."

India’s nuclear family

Quote:
Scientists and technicians at the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station have always been proud of what they have achieved. Rajasthan Atomic Power Station’s units 7 and 8, two of India’s largest, indigenous pressurised heavy water reactors, of 700 MW capacity each, started last week. So it’s natural that

the site director of the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station, C P Jhamb, is jubilant.
“Apart from lifting our nuclear apartheid, the Indo-US nuclear agreement erased the mismatch between our capacity increase and our fuel supply, which had dogged the Indian nuclear power industry,” Jhamb says, sitting in his office, with the serene Rana Pratap Sagar, a reservoir built on the Chambal river, in the backdrop. The reservoir was built for generating hydro-electricity and supplying water for the cooling systems in the nuclear power plant.

After the deal and the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group’s nod for nuclear commerce with India, the capacity of three of the plant’s six reactors has increased. Units 2, 3 and 4, earlier operating at just 50 to 60 per cent, are now operating in full swing, with Unit 2 rolling out at 102 per cent. The last two, unit 5 and 6, commenced operation by March. (The first reactor is non-operational.)

This station is dedicated to power production and has all its reactors under International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards. Following the deal, it became the first site to have received the benefits, receiving consignments of uranium oxide pellets from Russia and natural uranium from France in 2009.

The country’s other facilities are yet to derive the benefit and are still dependent on indigenous fuel from the Jhaduguda mines in Jharkhand.

With Parliament having passed the nuclear liability bill last week, Jhamb explains how the sector will benefit. “With old plants running at full capacity and deriving good profits, we can plan many major projects,” he says.

His colleagues share his optimism.

“With so much happening on the nuclear front, I am raring to get back to installation work on units 7 and 8,” says Chandra Mohan Pandit, a senior maintenance engineer who played a major role in installing unit 5 and 6 and is now in charge of security systems.

Meanwhile, the economy of Rawatbhata, a town owing its existence to the power station, is also growing. A small nondescript village in 1971 when the construction on the plant began, Rawatbhata is among the biggest municipalities in the state.

Property prices are rising, with suppliers of construction material and automobile shops doing good business.

“Whatever the town is today is because of the nuclear plant. As more reactors came up, the opportunities increased,” says Neeru Govil, 45, who teaches science at the Government Senior Secondary School for girls and whose husband works as a plant operator. “There is commotion about the deal. But we, along with many others, have benefited from the nuclear plant.”

When there is resistance against nuclear plants coming up in Saurashtra, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, locals here have not protested. “We do not see any danger from the plant,” says Arjun Gujjar of Kolipura, a village in the Mukandara hills wildlife sanctuary.

Villagers of Jawra Khalan, another small village 17 kilometres from the plant, say they have 24-hour power supply for domestic and agricultural use, which they feel is because of the plant. With the completion of 7 and 8 units, the state’s power shortage will be history, says a Nuclear Power Corporation official.source

ArcelorMittal, Indiabulls in JV talks for steel projects

Quote:
ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steel-maker, is in discussions with Indiabulls Group to form a joint venture company for scouting and mining iron ore in Rajasthan and setting up a steel plant.

"The discussions are on (between ArcelorMittal and Indiabulls to form a JV company). ArcelorMittal is pitching for a majority stake in the JV company," a person in-the-know
of the development said.

"There are indications of iron ore in Rajasthan. It is a mineral-rich state. The JV company would seek to locate and develop it. Then, a steel plant would be developed in the state," the source said.

According to the source, the JV would be between an ArcelorMittal subsidiary or an investment arm of the Mittal family and an Indiabulls Group firm.

ArcelorMittal Chief Financial Officer Aditya Mittal is said to be the brains behind the proposed venture, which aims at tapping the market for steel in North India, where there is no integrated steel plant.

"Promoters of ArcelorMittal and Indiabulls share a good relationship and the new venture would further their partnership," the source added.

Through LNM India Internet Ventures, it is said that L N Mittal already holds an 8.79 per cent stake in Indiabulls Power, which is developing various power projects across the country.

State-owned SAIL has already discovered iron ore deposits in the desert state.

The proposed investment in the JV could not be immediately ascertained. An ArcelorMittal spokesperson did not revert to a query on the cost of the proposed venture.

ArcelorMittal had in July said it expects to start work on one of its proposed Rs. 1.3 lakh crore India projects in early 2011.

The world's largest steel-maker, accounting for 8 per cent of global production, announced plans to set up projects in Jharkhand in 2005 and in Orissa a year later. In June this year, it signed an MoU with the Karnataka government for a Rs. 30,000 crore steel project.

"We believe that in 2011, in one of the projects, we will break the ground, we don't know which one... It is our hope that it should be in the first quarter or the second quarter," ArcelorMittal Chairman and CEO L N Mittal had said.

The company is in the process of acquiring land for construction of a 12-MTPA steel plant in Jharkhand. The company has proposed a plant of similar size in Orissa.

The company has already been allocated iron ore mines in West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand, where it is awaiting clearances to mine more such deposits. However, it is facing regulatory hurdles and protests over land acquisition in the state. Most recently, it had to move out of the Khunti-Gumla area to a new site near Bokaro on account of such problems.

Last year, ArcelorMittal had entered into a co-promoter agreement with Uttam Galva to produce steel.

State to become self-reliant in power production by 2015'

JODHPUR: In another five years, Rajasthan will become self-reliant in power production and may even produce surplus electricity. This was stated by S K Kalla, chairman and managing director of Rajasthan State Vidhyut Utpadan Nigam Limited ( RVUNL). Currently, the state is purchasing electricity at a higher price from other states. A number of power projects are under progress in the state with a total production capacity of 8800 MW.

Talking to the reporters during his visit to Jodhpur, Kalla said the government has sanctioned eight projects in the state with a production capacity of 7750 MW under 12th Five Year Plan. Six super thermal power stations with a production capacity of 660 MW are proposed in Suratgarh and Chabra. Besides, four more such power stations with similar capacity are proposed to be set up in Kalisindh and Banswara.

Along with this, thermal power stations with a capacity of 330 MW each are also proposed to be set up in Chabra and Kota before 2015. The permission for this has been given in principal, Kalla said. Apart from this, three power plants at Chabra, Kalisindh and Ramgarh are to be commissioned with a total production capacity of 1860 MW by 2011-12.

"We are exploring all sources of energy available in the state. We have proposed two gas-based power plants with a capacity of 160 MW and 330 MW which are to be set up in Ramgarh and Dhaulpur respectively. Private companies have also been given permission to set up their power plants in the state," he said.

Focusing on the rich deposits of lignite in the state, two lignite-based power plants with 250 MW capacity each will be set up in Barsinghsar of Bikaner by the Neyveli Lignite Corporation. Similarly, Rajwest Power has already started production in Jalipa Kapuradi in Barmer, which has a capacity to produce 135 MW. This plant is also lignite-based. Seven more units with the similar production capacity are to be commissioned later, he said.

Two more private players have been given permission to set up power plants in Banswara and Keshoraipatan. Ramgarh will also have two gas-based power plants by private players. Kalla assured that once all these projects are complete, Rajasthan will not only be in a position to meet the state's power demand but will also be in a position to produce surplus electricity.

Quote:
New Delhi: Azure Power plans to invest Rs 1,500 crore over the next five years to develop solar power projects. The company is looking for sites in Haryana, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and Karnataka, the company's top executive said.

“We plan to develop 100-mw solar power generation capacity by 2015 with an estimated investment of Rs 1,500 crore,” Azure Power chief operating officer Inderpreet S Wadhwa said. Azure Power has set up a 1-mw solar power plant in Punjab which supplies electricity to Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) under a long-term power purchase agreement. The company is developing another, similar-sized project in the state, which is expected to be commissioned in a month's time.

In Gujarat, it is setting up a 10-mw solar power project, which would be perhaps India's largest solar generating station when commissioned by the end of next year.

The company has planned to set up a 10-mw project in Karnataka and another project of 5-mw capacity in Haryana. “Our target is to add 50 mw generating capacity by 2012 and are looking at Karnataka and Haryana,” Wadhwa said. For the Karnataka project, the company has identified two possible sites—Bagalkhot and Bangalore.

Besides Karnataka and Haryana, Rajasthan is also on the company's radar screen.

Azure has sourced equipment for its initial projects from US-based suppliers but now it is looking to procure from domestic suppliers like Moserbaer as well is in a bid to expand its vendor base.

Temples told to improve public utility systems

Quote:
JAIPUR: In a bid to ensure a smooth passage for devotees thronging various temples in the state, the Devasthan department has urged all trust-managed temples to overhaul their public utility systems.

The department will be convening a meeting of all such temples authorities on Tuesday to reach a consensus. There are about 30 such temples in the state, including famous ones like the Govindji temple, Mehindipur Balaji, Jharkhand Mahadev, Khatushyamji, Chamunda Mataji etc.

"The idea is to ensure better facilities in all big temples for the benefit of devotees. These temples are frequented by lakhs of devotees throughout the year. But in focus will be those temples that hosts melas," said Bajrang Lal Sharma, commissioner, Devasthan department.

In fact, one of the interim recommendations of the Jasraj Chopra committee, set up after the stampede at the Chamunda Mataji temple at the Mehrangarh fort in Jodhpur, was to ensure that all temples of this sort have proper facilities not only to ensure a smooth passage for devotees but also to ensure safety.

A rush of devotees at the temple in 2008 had caused a massive stampede killing nearly 250, mostly youngsters.

"Most of these trusts have enough money that come into them as donations from devotees. And it is this money they will be required to use for building these infrastructural facilities. Some of them also have a lot of land and the first thing that such temples will be required to do is to build rest houses in them. These are those temples which have devotees coming to them from other states for melas but there is no proper place for the devotees to stay," he said.

Other things that will be required are toilets, drinking water facilities, ramps for the disabled and old, parking areas and permanent barricades.

The temples will also be asked to erect CCTV cameras for safety purposes. Provisions have to be made so that the waiting time for elderly persons, women and children is reduced to minimum. Provisions have to be also made to ensure that prasad' distribution is done in a proper manner.

The department also proposes to give free land to some temples like the Gogamedi temple in Hanumangarh that sees about 25 to 30 lakh devotees thronging it, some from other states like UP, Haryana, so that a rest house could be build for them.

Two more n-power units cleared

Quote:
Two more n-power units cleared

JAIPUR: The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) on Wednesday cleared the proposed Rajasthan Atomic Power Station Units 7 and 8.

The two new reactors are to come up at the Rawatbhata Nuclear Power site in Rajasthan where six reactors of 1,180 MW are functioning, Nuclear Power Corp of India executive director Sudhinder Thakur said.

"We plan to complete Units 7 and 8 around 2017 at the Rawatbhata site. After that, the problems of power shortage in the state shall become history," Thakur claimed.

Already, Rajasthan's share of nuclear power generation, currently at 19%, is the highest in the country. Thakur attributed the development to the decision of the Nuclear Suppliers Group to go for international nuclear commerce with India.

Since September 2009, there had been improvement in nuclear power generation in Rajasthan, he added.

"For instance, the RAPS Unit 2 has been in operation at full power from September 1, 2009. Units 5 and 6 have commenced commercial operation from February-March 2010 respectively and Units 3 and 4, which operated at about 60% power, now operate at full power. Rajasthan is among the states with the least power shortages," Thakur said.

Unit 3 has operated without interruption, for more than 400 days at a stretch, from June 26, 2009 to Aug 5, 2010. This, typical of nuclear power unit, outperforms any contemporary fossil fuel operations, he said.

While the power of Unit 2 is fully allocated to Rajasthan, all beneficiaries of the northern electricity region share power with the other units. Incidentally, with 1,180 MW, Rajasthan follows Maharashtra, which has a capacity of 1,400 MW, but uses indigenous fuel for nuclear plants, Thakur added.

Yes if you've read the article posted before it says that Rajasthan will become self reliant on power by 2015 and may even start selling electricity to neighbouring states.
