I think, that glitzy over the top Dubai-look is exactly what they are going for. Unfortunately you can't buy a good sense of style...

The reason that Baku is called "Dubai of Caucasus" is not the similarity between architectural styles of Baku and Dubai but amount of construction works going in both cities.

Actually Baku's long established nickname is "Paris of the East" due to the many Neoclassical, Art Nouveau and other Historicist buildings concentrated in the city center, a rich legacy of its first oil boom before Soviet rule. The nickname "Dubai of the Caucasus" was invented by the media due to the high-profile urban projects. Baku is not modelled after Dubai and nor is it planned to be monopolized into a single style of architecture, especially a façade of glass skyscrapers. In fact, traditional architecture with a preference for authentic historical styles is as popular and widespread as post-modern architecture, and many projects in Baku reflect both of these. This trend which went out of fashion in Europe with World War I, is enjoying a revival in Azerbaijan, which is also the case in the USA and to a lesser extent in the UK.

Baku is not engulfed by highways, the opposite is being done, as they are actually being diverted underground to tunnels and separated from ordinary roads, to solve the traffic congestion. In addition numerous underground parking lots and underground pedestrian crossings have also been built. When it comes to transportation, the main priority of the government is public transport and not cars. Massive amounts are invested into public transportation especially the metro and other railway projects such as a future tram network and a modernized suburban railway network.

I have to say that I don't know that much about Azerbaijan or Baku, but perhaps you could help me out here a bit.

All I know is that you held the Eurovision a few years ago, and there was some protests going on. I cannot remembre what they were about though. Human rights of some kind I believe. Which every country has issues with pretty much. Or is it worse in Azerbaijan? Is it as bad as in Dubai with the south asian or philippino workers there?

Another thing I feel about Azerbaijan is that they have very pretty girls there, and the city looks nice. But are you as protective about your girls as most muslims are on the arabian peninsula or northern africa? Or is islam there more open, as in Malaysia?

And finally, how are the views on western tourists? Are you influenced by the iranian ayatollah leaders nearby where they blame every westerner for what a few guys at CIA once did 40 years ago? Or are you more open like some of the middle class are in Iran for example? And how is the general view on outsiders? A take on this from a foreigner would be appreciated here.
