’Slow Food Fast’ to Hit Fashion District

By Ira Lu
May 22, 2008

Michael Ilic and his business partner Oliver Rosen have plans to begin feeding Fashion District denizens possibly as soon as July 1. Their new restaurant, Gram and Papas — a homely name considering the fashionista setting — is to be located at 9th and Los Angeles, just half a block from the California Market Center.

The name Gram and Papas is a tribute to the owners’ grandparents. The concept: “high-end quick service food with a focus on simple combinations of fresh, house-prepared ingredients.” It is essentially “slow food fast,” where flavorful, labor-intensive fare meets the fast-paced lifestyle of working Angelenos.

What can one expect from the dining experience?

“We are striving for a smart and efficient design that is comfortable and hospitality focused,” says Ilic.

Gram and Papas is intended as a salad and sandwich-based lunch establishment offering small and big plates from $4 to $15. Their beverage offerings are to include “intelligenstia coffee and teas as well as fresh juices and exciting blended drinks.” Say no more… sounds delicious already!

Ilic plans to open initially for lunch, then extend service for breakfast and dinner as business grows.

For those of you unable to trek to the Fashion District mid-day, fear not. Gram and Papas plans to have delivery service. Take-out and catering will also be available.

Stayed tuned for First Look coverage closer to the restaurant’s debut.

Four-in-One Concept Continues Downtown Retail Trend

By Rich Alossi
May 21, 2008

As the Santa Fe Lofts’ retail spaces continue to fill up, a grand opening announcement from San Francisco-based Upper Playground gives a preview of the four retail stores in one set for an open house celebration on May 31. The combined venture is a product of Matt Revelli of Upper Playground, photographer Estevan Oriol, and Downtown tattoo artist Mister Cartoon.

Retailer Upper Playground’s store will include a line of hoodies, t-shirts, shoes, and home furnishings, and helping to ensure Downtown’s art scene won’t succumb to wine bars and jazz lounges, space for an art gallery called FIFTY24LA is included.

The opening exhibit features works of Usugrow, Sam Flores, Jeremy Fish, David Choe, Herbert Baglione, San, Retna, Saber, Alex Pardee, Ron English, Doze Green, Slick, Armsrock and David Ellis, and many of those artists have contributed to the store’s apparel line, according to Upper Playground.

“The Last Laugh” is a separate space housing Mister Cartoon’s and Estevan Oriol’s retail lines, where apparel and photographs from the artists will be available for sale.

A fourth space will house a revolving retail/art concept. Custom motorcycles will be featured for the open house. Come August, the space will become a “promotional experience” for the Robert De Niro/Al Pacino film Righteous Kill.

125 E 6th Street (at Los Angeles Street)

looks cool

I seriously will think about moving into Downtown L.A. when I need to find a place to move to. There is definitely enough residential being added there

I hope to eventually make enough to afford it... I already am working on television shows post-production, but at this moment I am just starting off in the industry, and I hope to move into the film industry soon.

flemings steakhouse & wine bar preview
by Ira Lu on May 25, 2008

As the second phase of LA Live nears completion, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar is building out their multi-level restaurant with a projected opening of October 2008.

With over 50 locations across the States, Fleming’s is part of the Outback Steakhouse family of restaurants including, surprisingly, Roy’s Hawaiian Restaurant.

What can one expect at Fleming’s? All menu items are a la carte and the high-quality food is mainly traditional American fare with some dishes inspired by ethnic flavors, such as Asian and Tex-Mex. Angelenic was fortunate enough to dine at the Woodland Hills Fleming’s location to give a preview of the good eats coming this fall.

‘Maria’s’ Promises Great Italian, the Kitchen Sink

By Stephen Friday
May 27, 2008

Anchored by the success of Daily Grill and The Standard’s 24/7 Restaurant, new entrants into the Financial District dining scene are clustering together to create a nighttime destination out of city blocks long dominated by ink print shops and nameless cafes.

Centered around Wilshire and Flower in various stages of completion — Provecho, Caffe Primo and Maria’s Italian Kitchen — are taking a chance on an area of Downtown still discovering its potential after 7:00pm. Coupled with Elevate Lounge/Takami Sushi which debuted last summer, the corner is poised to offer dinner patrons a diverse selection of casual-upscale food offerings by year’s end.

Scheduled to arrive next on June 1 is Maria’s Italian Kitchen — the authentic, family-run Italian eatery first established in Brentwood in 1975 by Maria Alfano. Thirty-three years and nine locations later, her daughter Madelyn Alfano continues to expand the successful brand throughout Southern California.

Last week, Madelyn Alfano took a few minutes to speak with angelenic about the opening of her company’s first “urban” location.

“I’ve been looking at the Downtown market for about two and half years now,” says the restaurateur who initially considered properties adjacent to the Staples Center.

“My husband and I often spend evenings here going to shows at the theaters, and I want to help contribute to that ‘live, work, and play’ vision in our city’s core,” continues Alfano, a long-time Encino resident.

And she means it.

The new 5,000 square-foot restaurant wrapping up construction at the base of the 811 Wilshire Building will offer something for everyone.

Aside from the main restaurant, the space will include a full bar area, three private rooms with video conferencing capabilities, and a separate Maria’s Express concept — a first for the regional chain aiming to fulfill the unique needs of the local market.

Maria’s will also offer breakfast, lunch and dinner menus in addition to catering services, late-night takeout (with online ordering options) and happy hour on weekdays from 4:00pm to 7:00pm daily.

Considering the needs of daytime corporate offices, lingering after-work commuters, and round-the-clock residents, Alfano has covered all the bases for the community, an effort she proudly puts into each of her restaurants.

That market awareness should pay off.

“There are few options in Downtown today for casual, mid-range food… everything is high-end,” she observes. “Our express location will offer dishes in the $5 to $8 to $10 range. And ‘playing’ Downtown doesn’t stop at nine o’clock, we’ll serve dinner until 11:00pm every night.” (The latest offered at any of the nine locations.)

During the phone interview, Alfano pauses to give directions while she oversees all the final preparations on site for the new location. She laughingly shrugs off my reference to Maria’s Italian Kitchen as a large company, countering, “We’re your neighborhood Italian restaurant.”

Seeing her personal involvement first hand, I’m already convinced.

‘wine-ding down’ at takami sushi & robata restaurant

by Angelenic on May 29, 2008

If you feel the need to deflate after a long day at work, consider sauntering up to the 21st floor lounge of Takami Sushi & Robata Restaurant.

Between the hours of 4:30pm and 6:30pm, the work-weary can sit back, relax and enjoy the extraordinary view while filling up on their 1/2-off “lounge faire” menu, usually $8 per dish.

Takami’s recently launched “WINE-ding down” special features three unique wines at $5 per glass. The selection changes on a monthly basis and it is a great opportunity to try something a little less ordinary.

Grab a colleague, loosen your tie and take our advice. You may be just as surprised as we were.

Room & Board Entering Los Angeles Market

Minneapolis-based Room & Board will move into the Los Angeles market in a 40,000-square-foot retail location in Culver City, according to a news release by Grubb & Ellis, which handled the real estate transaction.

The store being developed at 9300 Culver Boulevard in a three-story, mixed-use building will open in early 2010.

Room & Board currently has eight showrooms in Minnesota, Illinois, New York, San Francisco and Orange County.

Myron Sokolsky of Grubb & Ellis said in a statement that the firm is working with the retailer to identify locations for new stores in a handful of key markets across the United States, including Washington D.C.; Boston; Philadelphia; Seattle; Portland, Ore.; Austin, Texas; Miami; Atlanta; and Ann Arbor, Mich. The cities targeted for expansion are locations where Room & Board already has a significant built-in customer base through its catalog and Web site businesses.

Panini Cafe Lights Up a Street

By Neel Sodha
June 4, 2008

Signage and classy new patio seating for the upcoming Panini Cafe has made an impact on the Skyline Condominiums at the corner of 9th and Hope, directly across from Ralph’s Fresh Fare.

Retail space on this side of Skyline has sat dormant for a few years, as rumors fled the developer was holding out for an upscale eatery once Ralph’s opened up across the street.

As final exterior work on the new restaurant continues, the signage and sidewalk improvements — complete with heat lamps, iron railing and polished slate flooring — has brought a fresh touch not just to the residential tower, but also to south side of 9th street which lacks pedestrian appeal.

Coming from Ralph’s, onlookers last night stopped and starred at the new bright and powerful signage installed this weekend. Unlike other new restaurants where signage is quite poor, like that of Tranquility Base and Seven Restaurant & Bar, Panini Cafe stands out.

As reported earlier, the owner originally expected to open the first week of June, however according to construction crews on site day, progress is a couple weeks behind schedule. Expect opening by the end of the month.

But, even before it opens, the inviting new storefront is definitely a sight to be proud of in South Park.

Ten June Openings Spreading the Downtown Wealth

By Rich Alossi
June 5, 2008

As I mentioned before, June is a busy month for new Downtown restaurants. Here’s the latest on the top ten businesses set to open this month, in no particular order:

Lime Cafe, the fresh/organic Mexican grill at 5th and Spring, is now open, with hours from 12:00pm to 3:00pm, and 6:00pm to midnight (closed Mondays) — margaritas, mojitos and sangria included. Angelenic readers were treated to free drinks this past Sunday as a preview.
118 W 5th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013
310-383-4578

In the Financial District, Maria’s Italian Kitchen is waiting on final approvals to move into its mostly completed space at Wilshire and Flower. We’ll keep an eye on this one for you.
615 S Flower Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017
213-623-4777

And beneath the Financial District, Famima!!’s fourth Downtown location is set to open June 10 at City National Plaza, with free goodie-bag giveaways and gift certificates — and a pollutey mobile billboard. This location will start out with weekday hours only (5:00am to 7:00pm), but the chain is known for expanding hours as time goes on.
505 South Flower St., B-level, Ste. 520, Los Angeles, CA 90071
213-623-3236

Barring any unforeseen holdups (is that even possible?) Crown Cafe will open in the coming weeks. A menu of salads, paninis, soups and high-end coffees isn’t too extraordinary — except that it’s on Los Angeles Street. A public preview was held this past Sunday.
523 S Los Angeles Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013

Panini Cafe has been covered recently on angelenic, and we’re still headed toward an end-of-June opening. Staff is currently being hired and trained.
600 W 9th Street, Los Angeles, CA 90015

With an interior undergoing construction, SipTea — the neighborhood’s first teahouse — is aiming for completion by the end of this month. Only time will tell if that target can be met, but it’s not looking hopeful.
852 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90014
213-622-8007

Suede Bar is opening June 26, despite an outdated website proclaiming a May debut. LA’s “hottest new celebrity bar” — their words, not mine — is entombed beneath the Westin Bonaventure Hotel at 5th and Flower.
404 S Figueroa Street #102 (Flower Street entrance), Los Angeles, CA 90071
213-489-3590

Inspections may be holding up the debut of Origami Bistro & Bar at the Douglas Building, which was supposed to open in early April. I’ve learned over the past year to add two months to every projected opening date in Downtown. Owner Brian Lee couldn’t be reached for comment, but we’ll keep you posted.
257 S Spring Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Falafel Express has been delayed (the irony), but restaurant partner Bobby Shethia opines the Historic Core eatery will be open within a couple weeks. Let’s hope my two-month rule doesn’t apply here.
433 S Spring Street
Los Angeles, CA 90013

Nothing says “show business” like … ribs? Showbiz Ribs should be opening in the coming weeks now that interior construction is complete. The restaurant should be open till 9:00pm daily.
520 W 6th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90014

Church & State’s completed interiors will taunt passersby for this weekend’s Dwell on Design loft tours at the Biscuit Co. Lofts: The restaurant was supposed to be a participant, but it’s unclear whether there will be any staff at the venue by the weekend (we’re guessing not). That being said, there’s three weeks left for Steven Arroyo to open by the end of the month.

Library Bar Adding Kitchen, Bar Food Menu

By Stephen Friday
June 6, 2008

Downtown’s favorite oxymoron hangout is pushing aside a few bookshelves to make way for a kitchen and in-house chef!

Library Bar manager Carlos Perez tells angelenic construction began this week on a new food preparation area inside the venue, a decision he says was made to feed those “well-heeled professionals and fashion-focused creatives” looking for some late-night grub at the pub.

“Customers tell us they need something to eat after ten o’clock, and they would leave to go other places. We don’t know exactly how the new kitchen plans will work out, but we want to keep those people here,” explains Perez.

At the moment, those plans include serving a “high-end bar food menu” from 4:00pm to midnight, Monday through Friday. “We won’t become a full-service restaurant,” the manager clarifies, “but we’re considering adding a ‘runner’ to serve people sitting at tables.”

Currently, Library Bar offers low-priced beer snacks, pizzas and sandwiches from Wolfgang Puck Bistro next door — an arrangement which will probably no longer exist after the upgrades.

“It will be a couple months before the new kitchen is complete… but when it’s ready, we expect some residents to consider us for dinner,” states Perez when asked if the changes might draw a different crowd.

With only Subway and The Standard’s 24/7 restaurant open nearby after 10:00pm, some may seek Library Bar as casual, mid-range alternative after prime dining hours.

First opinions?

Clever move, gentlemen — I expect nothing less from a place themed on studious works of literature.

Don’t forget the hummus.

Maria’s Downtown Officially Opens June 12

By Stephen Friday

Following a relatively quick built-out period in the former Flower Street Cafe space, Maria’s Downtown (along with younger sister, Maria’s Express) is scheduled to hold its grand opening the night of Thursday, June 12.

Residents, daytime workers and weekend visitors to Downtown will find this urban version of Maria’s Italian Kitchen a respite to the fast food chains and long-time luxury spots that dominate the area’s food options.

South Park Restaurant Openings Rehash, News Report

By Eric Spamer
June 12, 2008

Last week I discussed the upcoming parking structure and retail at 8th and Hope coming in the fall of 2009. That may be a year and a half away, but Downtown residents have much to be excited about in South Park during the upcoming months.

Rivera, the “modern Latin” restaurant from Chef John Rivera Sedlar, hopes to open at the Met Lofts on November 1. Sangria, margaritas, mojitos, oh my!

Nearby, the second location of the popular Culver City wine-bar Bottle Rock is scheduled to open in late July — but judging by the state of construction, that’s not going to happen. It’ll have some neighborhood competition once a second South Park wine bar (currently in negotiations) sets up shop just a block away.

The next phase of LA Live — including the Grammy Museum, Club Nokia, bowling alley and restaurants — is on pace for a December 1 opening. The Farm of Beverly Hills, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Katsuya, Rosa Mexicano and Yard House are among the confirmed tenants.

Nothing official has been heard out of Luma’s upcoming Danish restaurant/bakery Hygge, but the newest word on the street says owner Ray Lee has assembled a core team for launch, and now plans to coincide his debut with the restaurants of LA Live.

On the fast food front, Pastagina (this one to serve gelato!) and Quiznos will arrive this summer inside the Market Lofts, followed by another Johnny Rockets location inside the AT&T Center, making a total of three for Downtown.

On Olympic Boulevard, Fashion Cafe is filling a portion of the old Museum of Neon Art space [ed.: fixed] inside the Renaissance Apartments. A new storefront sign posted this week makes the announcement (credit goes to angelenic editor Ira Lu). Also, a German-themed restaurant from couple Eugenia Chung and Klaus Schmidt will transform the old Discount Tire Centers structure just blocks away.

Across the street from Ralphs, Panini Cafe is already lighting up and is on pace to open by the end of June.

Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles is looking to expand with five new locations, including one Downtown, according to Eater LA. They are looking for “free standing buildings with parking lots and full liquor licenses in mid-to-high income neighborhoods.” South Park is a likely candidate to fit that criteria.

Finally, let’s not forget Polynesian-themed Trader Vic’s is scouting the neighborhood, as stated in an April press release from the company.

Phew… anything missing here?

LOVE this place!! last time I was in L.A. i had dinner there and partied at elevate? lounge. it was awesome!! kinda sux that these so-called "bouncers" weren't letting everyone in. off course, we had a table with bottle service...makes me wonder if we didn't whether or not we would have been let in? whatever..It's an awesome place.

It's Maria's the place where Flower Street Sports Bar used to be? looks like it. I'm pretty sure it is...that bar looks very familiar.

Yep, that's the place. And before that it was Hamburger Hamlet.

desserts & architecture one and the same at patina

by Ira Lu on June 16, 2008

Who would have thought desserts and architecture can go hand in hand? At Patina Restaurant, adjacent to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, you will discover a happy marriage between the two.

The concert hall itself is a feat of architectural engineering both inside and out, and Patina faithfully mirrors the wavy, undulating effect on its wood-paneled walls. Quite surprisingly, Chef Ian Gresik’s desserts are also miniature culinary marvels.

Angelenic recently had the good fortune to sample Gresik’s newest summer offerings in a four-course dessert tasting and wine pairing. Gresik uses only the freshest local produce and the menu changes approximately every two months depending on what’s in peak season. Some of the dessert plates are painstakingly constructed to mind-bending effect. The only other dessert restaurant where I’ve seen such planning and precision is Chikalious in New York City, and they don’t come close to Gresik’s level of complexity.
In fact, I’m still trying to wrap my mind around some of the desserts.

We first tasted the vanilla bean panna cotta with madeleine, strawberries and mojito sorbet. Each component was perfectly perched and thoughtfully arranged.

Accenting the dish were a black pepper tuille (a thin, crispy and intensely flavored cookie), basil olive oil, strawberry syrup, a daikon sprout (at least I think it was a daikon sprout) and toasted almonds. The entire composition was playful and interactive, and made me a believer of “intelligent design.” The peppery daikon sprout might seem strange but it tied in so perfectly with the tuille I felt like the dessert came full circle. A lovely French wine was paired with this dessert, which I regretably cannot remember the name of.

The second course was a tangy yogurt with diced plums, sunflower seeds and plum foam. This dish did not photograph well so you will just have to use your imagination. The toasted sunflower seeds add crunchy texture and the deep nutty flavor comes to the forefront when paired with an old vine muscat. The diced plums seemed slightly under-ripe and had they been marinated in a liqueor I probably would have enjoyed it more.

The third course was Baileys souffle served warm in an elegant little espresso cup with a spoonful of chocolate gelato and a delicate tuille. A little surprise here that might send your brain into a tailspin is the tuille — it is salty where one would expect sweet, an experience I would actually like to have again because it is so unusual. Madeira wine complemented this course nicely.

The fourth dessert was probably the most visually and structurally stunning of all. This dish was a complex chocolate course composed of chocolate mousse, crunchy chocolate pralines, “white chocolate ivory” pearls, olive oil mousse, a dark chocolate tuille tube filled with espuma, toasted hazelnuts and a cherry. I almost wished I didn’t eat it because it was beautiful to look at.

“Espuma,” an airy, ice cream-based concoction melts quickly. Mine was liquid by the time I got around to it, but it was still tasty. The olive oil mousse had interesting flavor without being overbearing and the hazelnuts were strategically hidden. I felt like an explorer of unknown lands eating this dessert and loved every minute of it. A light port accompanied this last course.

Just when we were stuffed and didn’t think we could eat another bite we were presented with petit fours. I do not know how to describe some of these little treats but I can tell you we sampled chocolate truffles, homemade marshmallow, pistachio nougat, apricot-tea gelee and a macaroon. My favorite was the fresh, nectary gelee.

Chef Ian Gresik, looking not at all the pastry chef stereotype I had in my head, personally brought out this final offering. Can one really trust a skinny dessert chef?

At Patina restaurant, apparently you can. He asked if we’d ever had dined at Patina. We had not. “Well, you’re missing out,” he said. I am inclined to agree.

Patina’s desserts at $11 per plate might seem a little steep, but each one is carefully prepared with a generous dose of artistry.

It might be worth skipping dinner altogether.
