Any idea when the new ATC work will commence...the old one is dated and an eyesore, and there is no chance that it can handle the extra number of flights once the new terminal starts operating.

Mid-air scare shuts JU radio
Repeated overlap between the signals of Radio JU and the air traffic control had triggered mid-air confusion, forcing Jadavpur University to take the FM channel off air.
The channel that used to broadcast at 90.8MHz was shut mid-December following a directive from the department of telecommunications of the Union government. “The broadcast was suspended last month because of the frequency hazards,” JU registrar Pradip Ghosh told Metro on Tuesday. Officials from the telecommunications department visited the radio station on the Jadavpur campus during the day and tested the equipment. University sources said some of gadgets had been taken away for a “detailed probe”. Dean of arts Nilanjana Gupta, who looks after Radio JU, said Webel had been asked to “make necessary repairs to prevent the intrusion of our signal into the ATC’s”. The Calcutta airport authorities had been complaining to the telecommunications department for a year about the problem in communication between the air traffic control and pilots because of the signal overlap. The overlap first came into focus around a year ago when pilots complained that they were hearing songs and other voices while trying to speak to the ATC before landing. “The problem cropped up in the frequency used for communication during landing. The intruding frequency was identified as 90.8MHz and the point of origin was traced to a spot nine nautical miles or 15km from the airport. There were no such glitches when the channel was not broadcasting,” said a senior airport official. The channel authorities were asked to make a few changes to the transmission system. But the overlap resumed in November, this time in the frequencies used for communication with flights on the north and west routes. “We were unable to inform the ATC about our exact location, speed and other crucial data because of the disturbance,” said a pilot. Sources blamed the overlap for the communication problem with President Pratibha Patil’s flight on November 31, that forced the pilot to take the plane back to the parking bay from the runway. Kolkata Airport modernisation to be completed by March 2012
To be the best in the country:AAI chief Making a major announcement after completing 200 days in office, the West Bengal chief minister, Mamata Banerjee said in Kolkata recently that the Rs 2,300-crore modernisation project of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport will be completed by March 2012. She said that the renovated airport will provide a major fillip to the tourism sector of the entire Eastern and North-eastern region. “If Kolkata is developed, then automatically the tourism sector of the entire eastern and north-eastern states will also develop,” she said, adding that north-east was geographically very big but was isolated from the rest of the country. “The forests of Sunderbans, Jalpaiguri and Dooars can be developed on the lines of the African safari to attract both foreign and domestic tourists,” she said, adding that as peace has now returned to the Darjeeling hills, “it can be our Switzerland”. In a related development, B P Agarwal, chairman, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) who was in the city recently to inaugurate an operational building in the Airport Complex said that after the modernisation work is complete, it would be the best airport in the country. "After the modernisation work of the airport is completed, it would be the best airport in the country, even better than airports in Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru," he claimed. AAI had taken up the Rs 2,300-crore modernisation project for the Kolkata airport in 2008, which includes building a fourth terminal and revamping the existing ones. |

although I hate that stupid signature of him I dont think his comment is all that unwarranted. We know the working ways of AAI. Let alone being the best if they make it operationally efficient it would be great. no one gives balls to the way an airport looks (except for some of us infrastructure nerds
). If they would have managed a proper upkeep of the existing terminal itself am pretty sure there would have been far lesser complaints (barring of course the ones related to capacity constraints) than what we have currently. If you look at the comment itself you will know that its stated for the sake of it. How will it be the best? Has he cared to explain? or the dumbass reporter asked him how would it be better than a Delhi or a Mumbai? What are the parameters he has in mind? Is it just the visual appeal? What about the connectivity to and from the airport (Yes there is a metro planned I know)? Is there an integrated model for transit? How smooth will the transit (connecting flights) be. What about the courtesy of the staff? Would immigration still be a pain in the behind? Presence of touts at the taxi stands? Am not being cynical about the whole development. In fact this is one of the only few things am a little upbeat about right now. But making such statements on the fly doesn't make sense. Talking fancy stuff is way too easy than actual implementation. Is it too hard to say that a beautiful airport is on its way to completion and it will be one of the finest if not the best?

Do you really know about the working process of AAI? Well I'v a doubt. As AAI is controlling the Indian Aerospace which is one of the most safest in the world with very less accident or incident. AAI is giving most cheapest rate for using R/W, ATC, Landing charges, navigation use and appron use. AAI is not taking any UDF charges from any airport. AAI management is really very good and co operative. And you are talking about the CCU airport. Right? I would suggest you wait and watch since it will open. I'v been to the under constructed terminal with Master and Interior plan. No doubt it could be 1 of the best Terminal in Asia. |

I know the difference my friend. Those wording was not by me but by the AAI chief. Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad airport terminal is constructed by GMR n GVK. Where as Kolkata Airport Terminal is construing by RMJM, a Hong Kong base dcompany. And I told, wait another 5 months after that say anything about Kolkata Airport. |

From what I know, RMJM has only designed the airport(on paper). Construction is being carried out by an Italian-Thai joint venture in co-op with the Bengal govt and a few other local construction companies.
