I also thinks it looks beautiful, in fact before I came to SSC I've seen very little of Helsinki, and I was a bit positively surprised.

Although in some pictures I do get the impression that it's not the most lively city. BUT to me that is sort of fascinating, as the city looks far more planned and thought out than Oslo (it's sort of strange for me to have a more "noble" and beautiful city, but less hectic city life than what I know from Oslo). And where we have a lot of 4-floor (some 5) old buildings in most of the inner city, you have 5 or even 6 floor old buildings, which additionally are a bit more decorated and detailed than most of our similiar buildings.

Oslo is much more of a "chaotic" city, part of the reason being that most of our inner-city streets are built in a time where we actually had no city in Norway, OR city planning, so the streets were mostly built for horse and cart... So the streets mostly aren't wide (for example our trams don't have separate lanes in most streets). Helsinki seems considerably more orderly, and indeed (for the most part) more well-planned.

The russian influences seems to only add to Helsinki's personal character, and is nothing but positive in my eyes (don't misunderstand that one, in english that means "only positive" not "everything except positive" ).

This thread gives you a bit limited view as the pics concentrate on very few aspects (mostly fancy architecture in southern parts of the city). In terms of streetlife and the like Helsinki barely differs from say, Stockholm or Oslo.

Btw. Thanks for drawing up a bit deeper analysis, I'm just so bored to read comments like "looks nice".

and many more...

Why? I don't know, maybe because of minimalism, too much planning and lack of old town. Personally when I look at these photos I like the city. Brussels was also elected as the most boring city in some internet site, so don't worry.

hmm could be.. everything has to be planned and in control so maybe this could play a role? Helsinki is however far from boring in the summer.. it is one of the most lively cities in Europe during the summer..

Well Belgium has always been known for being boring!

I also "hinted" about the "boring" thing. But please don't get me wrong. Looking at pictures of Helsinki here at SSC actually has raised my interest in one day visiting Finland! Definitely. Part of the reason why I think like this, I think comes from what seems like a "quiet" Finland, looking at you from Norway... It's like we never hear from you like "people," but we hear from various swedes and danes (in media or even in person, visiting norway) all the time.... I bet you finns might feel sort of the same about Norway or Iceland, for example.

It's probably a bit exaggerated, that "boring" thing, too. We also know about the finnish relationship with alcohol (don't worry - we have the same thing in Norway, really, haha so i bet there is a lot of funny/crazy things going on too. And also, unfortunately, some negative stuff (I've heard of the shootings and stuff)... BUT HEY THATS LIFE SOMETIMES. CRAZY.

I think so to. I had a German friend that visited Finland. He told me that he visited a bar and people there just sat quiet without speaking to each other. He thought it was weird. Maybe some people think it's boring while others think it is nice with some silence.

sapmi: normally when finns are drunk they're far from quiet (right?) Perhaps your German friend confused Helsinki (did he even visit the town?) with Petersburg or with a bunch of russians?

You seriously had? ...your friend has been to Finland?

If that's the case for real - I mean, for real! - can I get your signature?

They are? I'd be pleased to hear the truth - been seeking it for years yet I'm still somewhat uncertain about this big issue.

Hä hä, don't try to be funny, mmkay?

What I meant was that I as a Swede probably don't see the Finns as quiet or boring because they are pretty much as the way we Swedes are. But maybe the Finns tend to bee boring or quiet from a German perspective.

hehe, no it was in Finland, but I don't know if it was Helsinki or some other town. But he was amazed when he walked out in the packed bar and it was quiet like in a library.

But I don't know much about how Finns react to alcohol.

Just because my country is better than yours, doens't mean you have to get so angry. Besides, Russia gets its name from Sweden, that should say something...

Helsinki is not boring at all. If you visit during the winter you might find the city boring but not during summer - no way. The streets are lively and there´s much to do.

I've never been to Helsinki although I live in Stockholm, I should take one of those slow boats I suppose, hate them but i suppose I should!
Should I speak english when in shops and bars and so on, or do people understand swedish?

most do, though whether they will is a different thing. with english you'll do fine but probably with swedish, too, to some extent anyway.
