Madhya Kailash
Is there any news on Madhya Kailash intersection? This is a very complex and congested place linking Sardar patel road and the IT corridor. In addition to that, the MRTS is running just next to the intersection making the interchange designs complex. I read, a few months back that an interchange is being planned here and that designs are invited. But there hasbeen no mention of this, after that.
Similarly, what happened to the Lattice bridge road intersection? That place was supposed to have a Subway cum flyover model. |

Regarding construction of a Dry Port (Container Freight Station) at Sriperumbudur, the Minister directed the officials to get in touch with the State Government for allotment of 100 acres of land and also get the feasibility study done for construction of elevated corridor from Maduravoyal to proposed dry port in order to have a seamless movement of cargo. This is one of the three Container Freight Stations planned by Chennai Port Trust. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Folks - Is this a new flyover between Maduravoyal and Sriperumbudur ? I thought they have already planned one between Maduravoyal and Chennai port. |

Land acquisition pushes up flyover cost
The redesigned flyover at Cenotaph Road-Turnbulls Road junction will cost Rs.19.93 crore
Chennai: The Chennai Corporation will have to spend Rs.9.70 crore on land acquisition alone to pave way for the redesigned flyover at the junction of Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Salai (Chamiers Road) – Turnbulls Road. The alignment of the flyover has been turned by 90 degrees and the flyover will come up on the Cenotaph Road-Turnbulls Road. According to Corporation officials, the Revenue Department has begun the land acquisition process but it is likely to get delayed as the area makes for prime real estate. The flyover was earlier proposed along the Pasumpon Muthuramalingam Salai-Turnbulls Road but had to be redesigned after appeals from local residents. Anna University was commissioned to study the new proposal for its feasibility. The report was favourable towards the redesign. According to the report, traffic is likely to increase at the junction as the Kotturpuram Road has become busier with the rapid development of the IT highway. Project developer The revised estimate (inclusive of land acquisition and transfer of service lines) for the redesigned flyover is Rs.19.93 crore. Earlier, the project estimate was Rs.12.5 crore. The length of the flyover has been reduced from 640 metres to 480 metres and the width would be seven metres. About 18,200 square feet would have to be acquired. Gammon India, which had won the contract for the flyover even before the redesign, will execute the project. The work value of the project was originally Rs.9.79 crore but will come down to Rs.7 crore because of the flyover’s reduced length. But rather than reducing the Corporation’s expenditure, the new design would only boost the expenses because of the land acquisition involved. The estimates have been approved by the Corporation Council and would be sent to the State government for its nod. Source: http://www.hindu.com/2008/06/26/stor...2658330300.htm |

Chennai Airport flyover works is going in full swing. Now the work is going on connecting the flyover with the GST road towards the city. May be in 3 months this work will be completed as the work is going in day and night.
But no idea about the work towards Tambaram!

I guess, Koyambedu junction is the worst of all - works just started a few months earlier, and it appears it will take at least a couple of years to complete the project if things go as expected. Heard there are still a few buildings yet to be demolished to give way to the project. Donno how far it is true...

Btw, is the roundabout interchange going to consist of three levels, as shown in http://www.cbrd.co.uk/reference/inte...s/3round.shtml, or just two levels? If it is going to be just two, they might have as well built a simple flyover for one of the two through traffic flows, and have the roundabout at-grade. |

yes recently i got to read a book on road transportation standards in which the merits and demerits of different kinds of flyovers and interchanges were discussed in brief. It says having a rotary kind of interchange is useful in case of a 'T'-junction but completely loses its advantage when used in a 4-road junction likke the one at padi. No doubt MIT bridge at chrompet is a big success and similar model is being adopted at various places along the GST road.
I also saw that the problem of weaving in case of a clover-leaf interchange can be over come at the ground level with slight modifications as has been adopted partially in the costruction of the kathipara flyover. In this case, aas heavy traffic is expected along the Airport guindy alignment the approaaching traffic from porur jn has goes underneath the arm connecting the airport with guindy so that those proceeding towards airport can take the other without being caught under heavy traffic from the airport side. A semi clover leaf interchange with two leaf arms and two under passes apart from main arm is the best one that can solve the traffic conjestion at a 4 road jn. A similar design has been adopted by the NHAI for the Koyembedu interchange but it has three arms and one underpass apart from the main arm. |
