On April 21st I took a long drive to the northern shores of my island Zealand and visited a few places - we start with Gilleleje a cozy fishing village 45min north of Copenhagen

GILLELEJE

The northernmost point on the island of Zealand and a very cozy traditional habour village

The northernmost point - Sweden in the horrizon

A lighthouse

The habour

The old town..

"Skyline"

Cozy streets, nice old houses and a nice beach but a bit dead, atleast in April

Rågeleje

Moving west of Gilleleje we get to a larger 'summer home' area Rågeleje with a new lovely beach promonade and some funky terrain

The route west of Gilleleje is very scenic with the ocean on your right and nice homes on your left

Ta da!!! Rågeleje downtown!!!

Yeah.. it's not exactly the urban feel people come from, but the promonade is nice

And the beach is lovely

The air is warm, but the water is still a tad too cold for me

Rotten old shack blocking my view

Moving a bit west we get to a nice hilly area

With a nice path to the ocean

Perfect kite weather it seems

The shore..

Some dude out fishing..

More shore..

And time to head back to the car..

All in all a very lovely place - I especially enjoyed the hilly area - it seemed perfect for a picnic

Tisvildeleje

Moving even further west along the coast we come to another small coastal town Tisvildeleje

The town itself isn't anything special - pretty much just summer homes for Copehageners, but the beach is sweet!

Wooded houses are fairly common up here - a nice example

As high as posible seems to be the goal

Old traditional house for this part of the kingdom..

Spring - finally!

Empty parking lot - won't stay like that for long anymore..

huge white bird tracks?

End of the road

Took a trip up there again today to finish covering the area - so here's some more pics from up north..

Frederiksværk

One of the "larger" cities up north located between the Roskilde Fjord and Arresø Lake - a very suburban and sprawly place

The old city moat still around...

The ever present pedestrian street..

I think it's a storck taking off...

And that's about that...

All in all I guess it's an okay place for suburbanites - but the center offers very little - there is also a habour and all the usual marts and all that, but certainly nothing special..

What I did like about the place was that is was located inside a wood - sadly most of the trees haven't gotten their leafs yet, but I can imagin it being nice in the summer..

Liseleje

Moving north of Frederiksværk we hit the coast again in the cozy coastal town of Liseleje - like most up here it's mainly summer homes

Here too you will find a nice beach

And you'll find houses scattered along the coast - usually tucked away in the dunes

Beach erosion is a problem along all Danish coasts, but can be stopped quite easily

Oh man I so wanted to get in...

Wave breakers works well too..

Going a bit inland we see the typical sandy dunes that's present almost everywhere along the coasts here

Old 'smoke house' where the fishermen would 'smoke' their catch so it lasted longer in the old days

Bring a towel and a book and you're good to go

More scattered houses - I will recommend people to look at the area with Google Earth to get the idea of how the area is

Another empty parking lot a bit inland..

And finally a bonus pic

Lots of new sprawl there

^Thanks mate!

Dronningmølle

The weather turned out better than expected today, so I desided to finish my coverage of the northern shore, starting with Dronningmølle

Mmmmm nature....

The city is pretty small and doesn't offer much - but some of the old buildings are pretty nice

Hornbæk

Moving on east we get to the old habour city Hornbæk and it's more recent vacation home district

We start out by the habour - that failed to impress.. pretty much only small fishing vessels

The old town..

The typical Danish habour buildings

Hornbæk Hospital specializing in spine injuries..

The old town

Traditional house

Calm and cozy..

The main street

Moving out west to the more typical part of town

In the outskirts you start get to where the rich people live - sadly they usually hide behind walls or hedges

So instead we move trough a forrest filled with traditional 'summer homes'

The building style dates back to the Vikings who used tared wood and 'living roofs'

There is of course always some who has to over do it

The modern version for the Viking on the go

Hitting the coast again..

And finishing off at the beach ( Sweden in the horizon )

Helsingør
Elsinore

Going further east we end up in the old strategic port of Elsinore - home of the Elsinore castle and a very well kept medival old town

We start by visiting the 'Kronborg Slot' castle made famous by the fictive Hamlet written by Shakespear

In the old days both sides of the strait used to be Danish and we taxed all ships passing - now the opposit side is Sweden

So this is no toy castle, it had a very important role and was contrary to most other Danish castles further defended after the age of cannons

To enter it you need to go trough a series of ports, moats and gates

Castle moat with Elsinore old town in the background

On the land between the moats barracks were constructed to house the soldiers manning the guns

Good luck getting in there under fire ( halfway trough the defenses )

There we go, only a stone trow away - and the closest I will get today

Off to the old town we go..

The exit is more inviting than the entry I must say

The rapid ferries between Denmark and Sweden, departs from each side every 10min

Getting closer

And we're there..

Another castle? Nope - it's the train station..

Flower market.

In typical Scandinavian fashion most of the old town have been made into a pedestrian shopping zone

Ehmm.. yeah...

The side streets are unchanged for the last 400 years

All private homes here was tudor 400-500 years ago

People back then had no respect for fires - some learned it the hard way..

Scandinavia representing!

And that's it.. the end of the northern cost - I hope the pics gave you an idea about how it is like up there.. maybe even made you want to visit some day

As a bonus here's a few pictures from the outskirts of Elsinore along the Strandvej ( "beach road" ) hugging the eastern coast between Elsinore and Copenhagen ( the most exclusive road in the Kingdom )

A beach hotel..

Old houses

And the Strandvej itself ( expect a lot of coverage from the road and it's cities in the following months )

WOOOW Spectacular !!
One of the best threads ever in SSC !

This is exactly what I want to see of every country ! Skylines and city pics are nothing to me. The most important of a country is the inside life ( housing, parks, restaurants, rural areas, roads, signboards, etc. ) . Sadly most of SSC members don't get it

As for Den- it's a very developed country with high living standards , definitely a model country for all. The streets, housing, nature, wow incredible ! I like them very much. Thanks FREKI for sharing the lovely photos !

More please...

I totaly agree - there's a lot of beautiful places that goes uncovered - and I want to see them - especially the more unknown parts!

Personally I have gotten a bit tired of covering Copenhagen ( this is my 4th year ) so visiting news different areas have been fun

Fantastic thread again FREKI, amazing how much effort you put in all of those! I'm truely amazed, thanks for showing these rural areas and small cities. That's geil!

Would be great to see something of Jakriborg and its progress. And don't forget bout Frederiksborg and some of the other splendid castles

But please, no Copenhagen again. I think you pretty much covered up every aspect of it

In SSC forum, almost all pic threads shows either 1) all pics of skylines of a city/country 2) all pics of Nature/ tourist spots of a country. Both of them are boring. I love to see something in between the two-- pics of the real life of a country- especially what kind of houses their people live in , how do the roads, road-signs, schools, offices, hospitals etc. look like, What kind of food people eat there etc.

Especially Housing pics is the most important .

So this thread deserve the Highest rating from me !

Spectacular thread (and country of course).
I love seeing rural areas, non-touristic places and beach resorts during off season.
