FM, you haven't seen pictures of La Habana. I went there about 6 years ago to visit my family. The country is definitely falling apart, and there are buses much larger than that. People hitchhike, which is a nice luxury, but everything looks so ugly, old, and decrepit. It's a shame that the Communists are still in power. Most of my relatives live on the east side of the island. The city roads there are all dirt and there are open sewers. There are a few motorcycles there, but mostly people walk to get around. The roads between cities are paved, but littered with potholes. Manzanillo, another city on the east side, was actually getting new pavement when I was there, so at least the communists aren't completely ignoring the infrastructure.

There are many countries on the world, that are not under Communism, but are even in much worse condition overall.

Cuba has no western standards, but it is still one of the better third world countries.

You're crazy if you've really been there and think it's better than the US. You must have stayed near the touristy areas. Believe me, you don't want to lose your freedom of speech/expression, it's never worth it.

Calling it a good 3rd world country is like calling Ethiopia a good 4th world country. The problem is that Cuba was very developed before the onslaught of Communism and has now been forced into the current situation.

It's nice to live in the USA where you have a freedom speech (to certain extent) and good living conditions at the same time. Now, you say it is never worth to loose the freedom of speech. When you are given a choice whether to have a freedom of speech and live in an extreme poverty or have a more or less secure life but not have a freedom of speech, what will you choose? You will say "to hell with this freedom of speech if I die from hunger"

Sorry for this long rant.

Hehe, easy. I'd rather take my freedom of speech so I can bitch and moan about the government that's letting its people die of hunger. You're talking to the son of a Cuban refugee. You're not gonna find someone more anti-totalitarian.

Back to the topic, the chunnel from Havana to the island with the castle (it's been a long time so I'm pretty bad with locations) is pretty nice. I think we took the cabs that are basically a motorcycle with a long seat in the back. Kind of interesting. As for getting across the island, it was a 14 hour bus ride in a Mercedez Benz bus. Couldn't say much about the roads except very rural and very boring along the way.

Guys..., to find the perfect country is impossible. Cuba with communisme is WRONG! USA with there education and healthcare systems are wrong as well. Try to find something in the middle, it´s better.
