This site had previously been excavated, but it was filled in during the economic downturn and then repaved.

Was it actually digging? I walked months ago and there was an excavator, however nothing had be dug out as of yet. I was quite disappointed.

No, but I was there around 5:30, so I assumed it was due to the time of day.

That excavator has been sitting there lonely for quite some time, unfortunately.

Hopefully it will keep the strong vertical emphasis the render promises.

From Crain's:

Quote:
Lexington Ave. spire could be back in the cards
RFR Realty locks up a new $70 million loan for a property in back of the Seagram Building, where it may restart a long-stalled plan for a 60-story tower.
By Daniel Geiger

RFR Realty has just secured a $70 million bridge loan from the Union League Life Insurance Co. for 610 Lexington Ave., a long-vacant lot that it owns on the corner of East 53rd Street. The site, which previous reports indicate can accommodate about 200,000 square feet of commercial development, would be eligible under the rezoning plan to significantly boost that total, though the exact amount of the possible addition wasn't clear by press time...

...It wasn't clear if RFR Realty, which owns a collection of well-known buildings in the city, including the Seagram Building on the western side of the same block and Lever House across Park Avenue, plans to begin building at 610 Lexington Ave. next year. Also yet to be determined is whether it is aiming to increase the size of the development by participating in the rezoning plan or go forward with a project that would not require additional air rights...

RFR Realty could be in a particularly advantageous position under the terms of the new proposal, which are set to be formalized by the City Planning Commission by the end of the month. The rezoning allows landmarked buildings greater leeway in transferring their air rights, so they can participate with the city in selling them across a broader geography in the area. That would allow RFR Realty to take unused development rights it holds at Lever House and utilize them at 610 Lexington Ave., potentially significantly reducing the cost and increasing the size of what it builds there...

Well I guess we now have plenty of precedents for a tower on a site this small rising into the exosphere!

this is exciting! I thought they secured financing a while back, anyways good to hear this. I hope the developer will decide to go taller.

This (610 Lex) along with 425 Park joining 432 Park in the supertall neighborhood being in such close proximity will really raise the skyline here in East Midtown. Here's hoping .
