The Congo River is only 1,467 meter wide between Brazzaville and Kinshasa, so it's only a matter of time before they build a bridge. If there hadn't been Mobutu and the Congolese civil war, there would probably be a bridge already.

On the other hand, it's probably a good thing there is no bridge yet. It would generate lots of traffics and criminality like on the bridges in Lagos. Thugs could probably block the bridge and ransom people as they do in Lagos. It would be captive traffic for them.

Despite the lack of a bridge, the two cities are already quite intertwined. The Congolese forumer Cédric Kalonji (from Kinshasa) wrote the following funny piece on his blog three years ago during the Congolese presidential elections. In a nutshel, while visiting Brazzaville, he noticed a Congolose voting officer (person in charge of monitoring the presidential elections in the DRC) who had crossed the Congo River and was busy doing 'other things' in Brazzaville instead of monitoring the elections in Kinshasa. He hadn't even bothered removing his official jacket.

Apparently it pays more to do 'other things' in Brazzaville than monitoring the elections in Kinshasa. Can't blame him though.

Kinshasa

Kinshasa!

Those were great photos, thanks for sharing,

Hopefully one day the DRC will take its rightful place amongst the big world players, its a huge country with a huge population but with so many problems.

It should be filthy rich with all the mineral wealth and tropical forests....tourists should be flocking like birds to see this country, if only there weren't armed militias running about everywhere!

Such a beautiful country.

And without the bridge, the many boatsmen can keep their job, too, of course.

Kinshasa is having PLACE du PEUPLE or PEOPLE'S SQUARE.

With a total area of approximately 20 hectares, the space to be developed benefits from access facilities due to the presence of converging traffic lanes that connect the different sectors of the capital.
