Yeah actually that's something I haven't really understood. The Oakland flights aren't there but San Diego has remained the whole time. San Diego can be distinguished in that the route has no competition to that greater metro area (unless you count LAX), but with fares (per mile, I suppose) still being low relative to their short routes, I still don't know why it's around. It's nice to have it though.

US Airways is cutting the one BWI-Las Vegas flight that it operates from July 8. The route will only be operated by Southwest.

Bill introduced to allow slots at BWI-Marshall Airport
The Associated Press 8:48 AM EST, February 16, 2009 With the bidding process off to a shaky start for five slots parlors in Maryland, a state delegate has introduced a bill to place slots inside BWI-Marshall Airport, WBAL-AM reports. The bill would allow a slots parlor to be opened inside the airport terminal with up to 3,000 machines. Voters would have to approve it as an amendment to the state constitution. Potential operators would have until April 2011 to apply for a license with the Maryland Video Lottery Facility Location Commission. The bill is sponsored by Democratic Delegate Eric Bromwell of Baltimore County. It has 10 co-sponsors, all of but one from Baltimore County. The airport is located in Anne Arundel County, but no Anne Arundel lawmakers have signed onto the bill. http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/loc...,5930661.story I'm assuming this won't be like in Las Vegas where the slot machines are dispersed throughout the terminal. They'd probably be confined to one area, segregated from the rest of the terminal activities...I think. If this ever happened though, it'd be years down the road, so really I'd have no idea what would be planned. I think Amsterdam Schiphol has a casino set aside? |

whether i like the idea or not, slots at the airport would probably do really well...and a lot of the money wouldn't be coming from in-state either

Amsterdam Schiphol
image hosted on flickr ![]() image hosted on flickr ![]() Behind the guy is an area for the casino...I think they only have a hundred or so slot machines there, so I'd wonder how 3000 would fit at BWI. http://www.schiphol.nl/web/show/id=73518/langid=42 |

I think this is a great idea. They should be behind security, in rooms that would hold at most, 100-200 machines each, with maybe 1 or at most 2 parlors on each pier. 3000 would be overkill, I think. But O'Malley has already shot it down...it's only a good idea if he thinks of it first, I guess.

...that would be bad news for Manchester, N.H. I'm sure most of the flights from BWI to there would shift to Logan.

I wish! I have no idea if BWI and jetBlue have ever been talking...but with jetBlue developing its Dulles presence over the years, it seems less likely jetBlue will want to face-off against Southwest and AirTran.
Also, this might not have been mentioned on this thread earlier, but Southwest is considering a couple BWI flights when it starts up LaGuardia service not too long from now. I don't think I've heard anything set in stone yet though. If BWI were to get the LGA flights then it would only be one or two dailies probably, with the rest going to Chicago Midway. I think they only got slots for 7 daily flights... No slots problem at BOS though so it could be any number of flights, if at all. Last edited by Itus; February 19th, 2009 at 05:34 AM. |

but hey, what do you expect? BWI's percent drop is better than a lot of major US airports. Las vegas is down 7% and O'Hare is down 8.5%, but to my surprise, several major world airports saw an increase in passenger traffic over 2007 as of Dec 1., 2008 (Wikipedia's most recent info...), but that leaves out the holidays and people cut way back on holiday travel:

It's time to worry if we fall behind National. Seems like it's safe to assume BWI is doing better than Dulles domestically.

That's 60,000,000+ passangers between the 3 airports. Wow.
National had a larger decline than BWI, so the gap in actual numbers widened.
