Maitreya's Trip to India

Hey all, I went on a trip to India last summer, didn't have the time to post pics. Here are some, they will be coming in sections. I'll post a batch now, more tomorrow!

Theme of the day:

Traditional India

Let's look at the people's way of life today. We'll start with some shots of my ancestral area, Vasai (near Mumbai).

Here is a scene from Papdi Village

and here is one from my ancestral village, Manikpur

We'll now move to the Andheri area. Here's a bhajji-wala selling vegetables (bhajji) in an open air shop. Most Indian shops are not in organised retail, but small business, either in bazaar format or in shops that are below apartments.

That's all for today, folks. Tomorrow we will go on a short tour of Hyderabad.

The above pictures were the pieces of bread you get before the meal. Next will be appetizers...tomorrow.

Today's theme:

Hectic India

Let's venture to Hyderabad, a city in the Deccan state of Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad has always been a prosperous city, and the former ruler of this illustriously wealthy state was the Nizam. I went on a trip of my own around the city.

My first set of Hyderabad photos will be covering the way of life in the Old City. Most antiquated Indian cities like Hyderabad and Delhi have a vibrant Old City, where chaos mixes with culture to bring out beauty and perfection. The old city may be chaotic, but it's a treat for any traveller.

Here we have some streetscapes:

Tomorrow we will go see some landmarks of Hyderabad.

As promised, today we have some important structures of Hyderabad

Palaces of Hyderabad

Here's a palace of the Nizam's in Hyderabad (I forgot the name). It is located atop a hill, and the public is usually not allowed in the complex. My cousin managed an event at the place (now bought by Taj Group, I think its being turned into a hotel) so we were allowed in.

No photography though, I only managed one shot of the entrance.

This is another palace of the former Nizam, called Chaumahalla (sp?) Palace.

One of the centres:

and another:

Finally one of the inside, in the Throne Room

Good to hear. Shukriya bhaisaab

Let's go for a few more shots of Hyderabad. We'll cover famous monuments in the city today, notably the Char Minar and the Masjid.

Apologies for the quality, I had to jump in and out of rickshaws to get them.

image hosted on flickr

Here's Mekkah Masjid, a stonebuilt Masjid built in 1617 by the Sultan of Golconda, Muhammad Qutb Shah of the Qutb Shahi dynasty.

image hosted on flickr

and here is an icon of Hyderabad - the Char Minar. It was built in 1591 by Quli Qutb Shah to commemorate the eradication of the Plague in Hyderabad. The story is that he prayed and said he would built a masjid on the place where his prayers were answered. This was the Char Minar (four minarets). There is a masjid in the upper area.

No problem, glad you liked them.

Stay tuned for updates! The more 'touristy' India still lies ahead, as does the financial capital of Mumbai!

Manic Mumbai

The commercial capital of India - gritty, tough, and fantastic!

Here's a relatively dated picture of the approach to Worli. Note the frenetic construction

Oh that hectic Hyderabad, manic Mumbai.

I can't wait to see some of busy Bangalore, crazy Calcutta, disorganized Delhi.

That Throne Room is banging.

Now we have a bunch of randomly juxtaposed pics coming over the next few days:

here's one from Agra...the Yamuna is getting polluted now. As you can see.

Lovely photos, looks like you had a great time. I like some of the buildings there, especially the palace at Hyderabad!
