Why do some people say "this is real Beijing" as if the other photos posted are not? Clearly all the pictures in this thread are 'real' Beijing, since they are all photos of places in Beijing. You may be arguing that the usual pictures that are posted are not representative of what is found in most of Beijing, but that does not mean that they are not 'real' Beijing, nor does it mean that the areas shown in the last post (which might be more common and widespread than shiny new skyscrapers or nicely restored historic areas) are the only places that are 'real'.

The reason why Tiger said that is in the Chongqing thread.

It would be more logical to say "the other side of Beijing" .

and yes those pictures Tom_Green took in his 2006 Beijing trip.

While it's good to post all sides of Beijing, it should not do it for the purpose of retaliating.

cool, i guess this is in prep for their national day? I guess they want to make this day as spectacular as the Olympic opening night. Are there other angles of this great tower?

I guess we shouldn't always take it in the very real sense of it.

To my understanding, it is all about the 'ratio' of the environmental quality shown in a presentation (as this thread, for example). Of course if a city X is made up of 90% slums and 10% decent buildings then showing only those 10% would not be 'real' in a sense that it would only be a small part of the city. I'm not sure how large are the 'good' areas of Beijing compared to decayed ones but I'm quite sure that the ratio should not be anywhere near the point where any of them would be 'not real' or 'real'. It seems that Beijing is overall a modern and advanced (and still very fast advancing) city. So those shiny new skyscrapers, motorways and shopping malls probably represent the 'real' city quite well.

Anyway, it's very interesting to see all sides of the city. This is what I try to look for myself when travelling...

Grow up, Beijing is Beijing there are no fakes. No city is perfect, how many times do we have to talk about it here? Must I show the ghettos of New York in the American thread as "Real New York" or the run down neighborhoods of Detroit as the "Real Detroit" ?

Well said. I was exactly going to say that!

Beijing is a great modern world metropolis. It sure has some areas that are waiting to be redeveloped. But overall its a clean and well planned city. I live in Beijing now and can attest to it.
