Make Sriperumbudur a brownfield electronic cluster area: FICCI

Quote:
New Delhi, Oct. 14: Sriperumbudur near Chennai should be earmarked as an electronic cluster area, the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has suggested to the Government.

For a region to be identified as brownfield cluster, at least 30 per cent of the region’s turnover should come from manufacturing, FICCI said in a letter to the Department of Information Technology.

A brownfield cluster is an industrial zone that is rebuilt or renovated out of an existing structure.

In its suggestions on the Electronics Manufacturing Policy, the chamber said the Rs 1,000-crore minimum annual turnover threshold (as envisaged by the Government) for identifying brownfield electronic clusters, should be brought down to Rs 200 crore so that more regions can be accommodated under the policy.

“Similarly, there should be flexibility in terms of minimum number of units within a cluster. Also, the number of units should be related to area. Otherwise, it may be technically possible to apply for the scheme with 10 units dispersed over a large area, even if contiguous,” FICCI said.

Oragadam – fastest growing suburb in Chennai

Quote:
Till a decade back, Oragadam, a town located on the outskirts of Chennai, was sleepy with vast silent tracts of land. But today the locality presents itself as one of the fastest growing suburbs of Chennai. The locality known as the biggest automobile hub in South Asia is evolving into a multi-faceted industrial zone and will soon be developed into self-contained areas with residential spaces, educational institutions, hospitals and other social infrastructural facilities.

So what are the driving factors? The locality is strategically located between two national highways- NH-4 and NH-45. It is also well connected to the Chennai port, the Chennai Central railway station and an international airport. The area houses leading auto manufacturers, auto component companies, logistics or warehouse service providers, IT and ITES operators and a host of FMCG companies.

Due to the rapid industrial and infrastructural development, the area has caught the eye of the builders, which further created lot of residential development in the Oragadam region in the last few years.

To cater to the growing demand and working population, there are many renowned developers such as Inno Group, MARG ProperTies, Rich India Cityscapes and Tata Housing etc. already have their presence in the locality.

On a chat forum – Guru Talk organised by MagicBricks.com, S. Ramakrishnan, CEO, MARG ProperTies, said, “Oragadam is the latest on the radar of many real estate developers in Chennai. This place is doing well in terms of infrastructure development. The locality has huge potential to grow in the next 5 years.

“The multi-storey apartments in Oragadam region are available between the ranges of Rs 2,500 – 3,500 per sq ft”, he added.

Many believe that the locality is becoming major attraction for NRIs too. “NRIs working in the IT or manufacturing belt are seeking property in the suburbs close to the workplace which is further escalating the residential demand”, said, U. Mohan, local realtor, from Konnect Realty.

Japan has no other choice as their future with China is one shaky grounds because of Political issues on the "Island " problem. So the next best option is naturally India and particularly Chennai. So it is Chennai instead of China.

India should make best use of it. Hope politicians don't expect kickbacks from them

Samsung launches new product range

Quote:
CHENNAI: Samsung Electronics expects a 30% increase in its refrigerator and split-AC sales with its new range of energy-efficient 'Digital Inverter Series', which it launched in Tuesday.

The company plans to increase sales by widening its distribution network and setting up about 400 single brand stores in tier-2 and tier-3 cities across India. The company has about 300 stores now.

The company's new series of refrigerators are about 40% more energy efficient and keep things cooler for longer durations, Rajeev Bhutani, head-home appliances business, Samsung India, said. The products come with a digital inverter compressor that adjusts cooling based on daily use and temperature levels and also eliminates the need for an external stabilizer. The products are available in different capacities from 253 litres to 415 litres, priced between Rs 20,500 and Rs 49,500.

Samsung expects these products to contribute about 35% to overall refrigerator sales this year, Bhutani said.

The company's digitial inverter split ACs, priced between Rs 23,100 and Rs 60,900, also come with energy saving features and smart inverter technology that replaces external stabilizers. Samsung currently has 13% market share in the split ACs segment in India.

All digital inverter series products will be manufactured at the company's plant at Sriperumbudur near Chennai. The unit has the capacity to make 1.2 million refrigerators and 450,000 split air-conditioners a year, 10% of which will be exported to south-Asian countries.

The company plans to widen its distribution network and set up about 400 single brand stores in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

Oragadam to have wider road soon

12-km stretch connecting to NH4 to be made six-laner under industrial corridor project

As part of phase II of the Oragadam Industrial Corridor Project, work to widen a 12-km stretch of the Singaperumal Koil–Sriperumbudur Road is expected to commence in a few months.

The road connecting Oragadam to the Chennai-Bangalore Highway (NH4) has traffic of around 30,000 passenger car units passing through every day.

The four-lane road is being made into a six-lane facility at a cost of Rs. 86.65 crore by the Tamil Nadu Road Infrastructure Development Corporation (TNRIDC). After the widening, the road would have two service lanes each on either side. Land acquisition for the project is nearing completion. The work is expected to be completed by mid-2015.

According to sources in the TNRIDC, as traffic converging from out of Oragadam uses this road that sees the maximum PCU of all the roads under the project, the government decided to widen it. Tenders for the project are under evaluation.

Meanwhile, as part of phase I of the Rs. 462-crore project, traffic on a grade separator coming up at the Oragadam junction has been allowed on one side. This is to help reduce congestion at the junction of the Vandalur–Wallajahbad and Singaperumal Koil–Sriperunbudur roads.

G. Raman, who runs a business in Oragadam, said traffic was being allowed on the flyover for the past few days. “There have been times when traffic jams have lasted two to three hours. Once, it took nearly five hours to sort it out. There are several major companies in the area and when all of them finish work for the day and the employees leave in buses, traffic jams occur,” he said.

“Traffic is being allowed temporarily on the right side of the grade separator from the Vandalur side to Wallajahbad. And on the right hand side, service lane traffic proceeding from Wallajahbad to Chennai is being allowed,” an official said.

Around 60 per cent of the left portion of the grade separator has been completed. Of the 42 piers, 36 have been completed and of the 44 deck slabs, 33 have been completed.

The approach on the Vandalur side has been completed and the one on the Wallajahbad side is under progress.

The Rs. 20.80-crore facility is expected to be completed by June. Phase I of the project is likely to be completed by March 2014.

I was almost lost when I took a right from the SRPD road to check a few companies seen at the distance

Lot of companies are around JK tryes area not seen from the main road. surprisingly the approach roads are very good and smooth. Somehow I reached the main road back after circling within the industrial area for some time.

These companies are not in/seen from Manimangalam-SRPD raod. After JK tyres, take a right after a km.

New approach road for some company(JK tyre?). I saw many such approach roads being laid in Oragadam as well.

ORAGADAM

There has been a sea change at Oragadam from our last SCR trip. Around Oragadam junction, I couldnt see any land open anywhere. One should actually go to the place and witness the auto-city of India. Whatever i am posting here is not even 5% of Oragadam.
