The official summer transfer thread 2008

The silly season has officially got underway.

http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news...ane260408.html

Spurs sign Croatian star Modric

Tottenham have won the race to sign Croatia midfielder Luka Modric for a fee believed to be £15.8m.

The Carling Cup winners have agreed terms with the in-demand 22-year-old, fending off interest from Premier League rivals Newcastle.

The play-maker will leave Dinamo Zagreb for White Hart Lane this summer subject to passing a medical.

Modric must also obtain a work permit but that should be a formality as he is a regular in the Croatia national team.

On Tuesday, Modric was reported to have been on Tyneside to discuss a move to Kevin Keegan's Newcastle and visit the club's training ground.

Recent reports have also linked him with Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

The signing of Modric is a major coup for Spurs manager Juande Ramos and the Tottenham hierarchy, who needed to make a statement of intent with the team falling away badly after their Wembley triumph against Chelsea in February.

Spurs' season has fizzled out disappointingly with just a single win in their last seven league games, and a swingeing overhaul of the squad was predicted for this summer, but the signing of Modric has comes as a major surprise.

After making his name in the Bosnian league as a teenager, Modric moved to Croatian club Inter Zapresic before joining Dinamo in 2005.

He made his debut for Croatia a year later and has gone on to win more than 20 caps for Slaven Bilic's side - including the home and away victories over England that cost them their place at Euro 2008.

YEEEEEEESSSSSSSS!!!!!!

What a signing, get in there!

Mods can you please sticky this.

Modric was at White Hart Lane today watching Tottenham draw against Bolton, he was sat next to Tottenham's Sporting Director Damien Comolli.

im go0ing to fucking kill myself, I am in serious dismay right now. I have wanted this boy for so long and he is one of my favourite players. I am now going to withdraw my support of Croatia, if you fucks sign Carlos Kameni I do not know what will happen.
Please don't sticky this, the transfer thread should have been started in a less partisan manner

liverpool are linked with barry (yes please), american 200m legend michael johnson (unsure), and david FAKIN bentley (handy player but potential to cause unrest due to shit attitude). good to see rafa after some english players though.

i'd hand harry "can't play - blister" kewell his P45, and voronin, and pennant.

crouch stays and is sent a prostitute by way of apology for season-long neglect.

£2m for Pieneer is a bargain! Congrats on a very good bit of business Moyes

More on the Modric move from the official site.

Tottenham Hotspur plc is pleased to announce that agreement has been reached with Dinamo Zagreb and the Croatian international midfielder, Luka Modric, age 22 years, for the transfer of his registration to Tottenham Hotspur FC for a total consideration of Euro21 million payable in instalments over the next four years.

The player's contract is for a period of up to six years and the agreement is conditional upon the granting of a work permit.

By my calculations that makes the fee £16.54m which would me is now our record signing although it depends what the business rate is as opposed to the tourist exchange

It also depends on inflation and currency fluctuations over the period!

Modric has been raved about and this is the big step up, Tottenham have a decent squad but it could do with some balance and a spot of bulking out, Ramos will be a very busy man over the summer.

Chelsea seal £16.2m Bosingwa deal

Chelsea have completed the signing of Porto right-back Jose Bosingwa on a three-year contract for £16.2m.

The 25-year-old Portugal international will join up with the Blues after Euro 2008 in the summer.

Bosingwa, who was also a target for Manchester United, was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but moved to Portugal as a child.

The full-back helped Porto to the 2004 Champions League title and four league championships since signing in 2003.

Bosingwa made more than 40 appearances for Boavista before former Blues boss Jose Mourinho brought him to rivals Porto.

Although he was used sparingly in his first season, the defender, who can also play on the wing, had been the first-choice right-back during the last three seasons.

His performances have earned him seven caps for Portugal and he is expected to be named in their Euro 2008 squad this week.

Portuguese journalist Alberto da Silva, who works for Abola, believes Bosingwa has been overvalued by Chelsea.

"He's a good player but he's not worth that much money," he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I think Chelsea's current right-back Paulo Ferreira is a better player. I don't know who negotiated the deal, but he did well for Porto."

Three years ago, Bosingwa was involved in a serious car accident along with four other footballers.

All survived, but Sandro Luis, from a minor Portuguese side, had to have his left foot amputated as a result of the accident.

Bosingwa's arrival at Stamford Bridge will cast doubt over the future of another right-back Juliano Belletti.

The former Barcelona defender, who scored the winning goal in the 2006 Champions League final against Arsenal, has been overlooked by Blues manager Avram Grant in recent weeks, with Michael Essien occupying the full-back berth.
