Here's the Curbed piece from today:

West 42nd Street's Resurrected Atelier 2 May Look Like This

http://www.newyorkyimby.com/2013/04/...telier-ii.html

Quote:
We know that construction has restarted on the long-stalled Atelier 2 at 605 West 42nd Street—we have the photographic evidence to prove it—but we don't know much else. How tall will it be? Who's the new architect? What, exactly, will it look like? Today, we may have an answer to the latter. New York YIMBY spotted a new rendering on the website of RSpline Studios that looks like a higher quality, more detailed version of the rendering we saw back in October. RSpline, a visualization firm, does not list an architect for the project (previous plans listed Costas Kondylis), but from the image, the development looks taller and a bit more "schizophrenic" than previous plans.

The facades are a mishmash of blue and white checks, and a detached cube has been plunked atop the eastern tower. The anchoring commercial space is still huge, and its roof appears to be covered with lawns for the residential buildings, which, last we heard, will be rental. As for the height of the towers, we've heard 57-stories or 45-stories, and NY YIMBY points out that they look taller than the neighboring 653-foot-tall Silver Towers, so these bad boys could rise somewhere in the vicinity of 700 feet.

Thread should be moved back to the skyscraper section. This is clearly 200m+.
It would be nice to have some official confirmation of this new design, including the height but I'll move the thread since we now have news of a blockbuster price for a floor of units in Atelier that could only drive this project to new heights.

I'm not sure about the design. Maybe additional views will convince me otherwise. The height though is impressive. Its incredible when the construction of a 600+ ft tower takes you by surprise.

Two more tall ones are about to rise just to the south: Extell's on 10th and 40th and Silverstein's on the old MB site.

Looks like this tower will be 656 ft and 61 floors per their ammended permit: http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/Jo...allbin=1087909

So we are indeed in skyscraper bliss over here.

Just a heads up, 656 ft is exactly 200 meters, not 202. 3.28*200=656.

I wonder how it will look from the front. The shorter west wing clearly is offset from the eastern flank. The other strange thing is that this tower clearly is divided into three segments, and they all have different facades.

This could end up as the largest apartment building in NYC. My jaw dropped when I saw the # of units, and I'm pretty sure the only rival (London Terrace Towers) has 1,700 units, but those are split between 14 buildings.

Im guessing this might end up being one of the largest residential buildings (by number of units) in the world when built. Does anyone know what the largest residential buildings currently are?

Moinian seeks to enlarge Atelier II

Quote:
Joseph Moinian’s plans for a mammoth residential tower at 605 West 42nd Street are officially back in play. The developer filed a new application for the site today with the city’s Department of Buildings which calls for a 61-story, 656-foot tall rental tower with more than 1,100 units.

Moinian had first earmarked the 1.1 million-square-foot site, located adjacent to the Moinian Group-developed Atelier condominium tower, for a hybrid building with rentals at the base and condos starting at the mid-section and above. In a more recent interview with The Real Deal, however, Moinian referred to the tower as a rental, indicating that he may have scrapped plans for the condos.

The filing shows that Moinian wants to build a total of 1,669 units at the development site, which includes the Atelier at 635 West 42nd Street. There are 478 units at the Atelier, public records show, allowing for 1,191 at the so-called Atelier II.

The project’s architect is David West of Goldstein Hill & West, Moinian has said, though early plans called for prolific architect Costas Kondylis to design the property.

Moinian paid Verizon $120 million for the building in 2005 and began construction. The recession brought the project to a halt, although the foundation is more than half complete, and the site is registered as an 80-20 project eligible for tax abatement.

The developer has been seeking a partner with which to develop the site for several years and even considered selling the site. He tapped a Jones Lang LaSalle team of Ron Cohen, Richard Baxter, Jon Caplan, Scot Latham and Stephen Shapiro to market the property as a sales opportunity in 2011.

While it was not immediately clear if Moinian had found a new development partner, he appears to have gotten a small cash injection of around $10 million after refinancing a land loan at the site late last year, according to public records.

In my opinion the design is good. Nothing special, no great work of art, but still good
