Also, if a new stadium is getting built, they need to start a design competition for it soon.

It'll be a shame if it gets demolished. I assume Moscow will hope to bid for another Olympics sometime in the not too distant future

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin has quashed rumors that stadium to host the 2018 World Cup final will be demolished and rebuilt on another site.

The 80,000-capacity Luzhniki Stadium is to undergo wholesale reconstruction work after next year's world athletics championships to prepare for the event's opening match, a semifinal and the final.

"Luzhniki is a sacred place. So the stadium will remain in its current place," Sobyanin said. "Of course, it requires serious reconstruction, but we won't be changing site."

It remains to be seen whether the arena will be completely leveled before being rebuilt.

Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said in November that starting from scratch could be cheaper than making the necessary upgrades to the existing structure.

But Moscow’s historic monuments agency said it wanted to save at least the facade.

Luzhniki was built in 1956 and refurbished for the 1980 Summer Olympics.

Some more news on the stadium renovation for the 2018 FIFA World Cup (by the Slavic Football Union):

The general director of the Luzhniki Stadium has admitted that the cost of renovation ahead of the World Cup in 2018 will be around $1b. Aleksandr Pronin believes that the decision to maintain the structure of the stadium, as opposed to simply demolishing it and rebuilding, has added a significant amount to the construction costs.

They'll try to maintain the running track within the renovated stadium if they can.

In the meantime, preparations are still underway for this year's IAAF World Champs (they're planning for a capacity of 50,000). They renewed the track last summer and will replace the synthetic pitch with a natural one before the action starts.

Here's an update on preparations for the 2013 WC (courtesy of the Moscow LOC):

What about the Big Arena preparation?
We had strict deadlines. In June the Big Arena will host the rugby-7 world championships.[1] So we started the renovation last summer. Both IAAF and rugby required the natural pitch, so on 11 May we’ll start replacing the artificial pitch.

Where will you get the pitch from?
It’s been cultivated in a nursery-garden in Tula for 2,5 years now. By the time we bring it to Moscow it’ll be a three-year-old, well sprouted pitch with a dense sod.

Won’t the rugby players destroy it?
It is a concern indeed. They’ll play for three days from 9 to 9.[2] If it rains, it can be a disaster for the grass. So we have extra grass to replace the bad one during the nights. Anyway we’ll have more than a month after the rugby.

Big Sports Arena also hosts a number of soccer games…
“Spartak”’s game on 11 May will be the last one.

You have another big event coming up – the FIFA World Cup 2018. Will the track be removed after the IAAF World Championships?
It’s not decided yet. Anyway, there is no point in doing a full renovation of the venue before Moscow 2013. But we did a redecoration of all the areas that will be used during the event.

Will they lower the pitch and cut the athletics track, in this case, there will still be probably lots of space between the seats and the pitch.
Or will they reconstruct the stands, but keep the facade and roof?
Complete rebuilding maybe?
Any clear pics of the project?

moreover, setting up a running track will be possible. It was said that it could be installed on the base which would be lifted up and located somewhere near 15th-20th row so it will reduce the capacity for athletics but won't ruin the purely football arena. It will be done the same way as in Madrid (I don't remember the name of the stadium, I guess it's U/C either)

yes i have heard that too. After the world cup they will put a running track

Probably the best option given how few major athletics events there are that can justify the use of a major stadium.
