It is good that an interor reconstruction project has been proposed for Luzhniki Stadium, but I don't want the track removed.

The Luzhniki stadium was opened on July 31, 1956 to the 1st Spartakiad of the Peoples of the USSR. This stadium had no roof since 1956 till 1996. The roof was built during the reconstruction of 1995-1997, when the UEFA changed the criteria for stadiums. The last match was played at old stadium on November 22, 1995 (Champions League, Spartak Moscow - Blackburn Rovers, England 3:0). The new stadium with roof was opened in 1997, to the 850-anniversary of Moscow's foundation and 100-anniversary of the Russian Football. In 1998 Luzhniki stadium got the 5-stars status from UEFA.

I assume it is going to host World Cup final in 2018. Another "small" final venue! And while I can understand it when Olympic type stadium is used (Berlin, Rome, Moscow etc) I will never understand why they are building such a small final venue in Rio!
Apart from that I like design a lot, no hanging upper tier but continuous seats, looks much cooler indeed! |

Small?
![]() I think it's huge, almost 80k and a lot of space for temporary seats.. They will reconstruct it for WC, I think they can make it to 100k.. |

![]() If they can extend it and add some temporary seats that's fine, but I wouldn't bet on it. FIFA accepted New Maracana with 76.000 seats in a country where everone lives football, I see no reason why they should push Russians make it bigger! If you read official FIFA Evaluation Bid document that can still be found on the FIFA website you will see that stadium is listed with 71.500 seats plus 5000 media seats. I heard in the past that extension to 89.000 seats was planed, but I also read that it may not be necessary!Guess we'll have to wait and see! Last edited by ElvisBC; March 7th, 2011 at 04:45 PM. |

If they reconstruct it to 90k, it would be one the biggest Fifa WC final venues in history.
1974. Olympiastadion, Munich, 75.000 1978. Monumental, Buenos Aires, 71.000 1982. Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid, 90.000 1986. Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, 115.000 1990. Olimpico, Rome, 76.000 1994. Rose Bowl, Pasadena, 92.000 1998. Stade de France, Saint-Denis, 80.000 2002. International Stadium, Yokohama, 70.000 2006. Olympiastadion, Berlin, 70.000 2010. Soccer City, Johannesburg, 85.000 2014. Maracana, Rio de Janeiro, 76.000 2018. Luzhniki, Moscow, 90.000+ |

So they are going to lower the pitch by 4 meters, that will add some rows of seats. No more running track but still a big distance from the stands in the back of the goals to the pitch...
The view from behind the goals is plain horrible! ![]() And things don't get much better in other corners of the stadium...... the stands lay back a lot, what were they thinking when they built this stadium? Guess football wasn't part of their interest.

very true, but his point still stands. it's awful for football, and digging out the track rarely improves things much. If they're getting rid of the track then why not go all the way and gut the whole thing into a proper football stadium? cost surely isn't an issue?

Project will be developed by group of one of the best companies in its spheres:
Colliers International (strategic advisor for development of the area and reconstruction of existing facilities) Populous (modernization of stadium interior) ARUP (development of transportation system) Mott MacDonald (expenditure management and engineering design) IMG (management of hosting of mass events)
