Good News this Pisa Style-building-2010.1.7

Glazing completed on Capital Gate

More than 12,500 unique glass panels fitted onto Abu Dhabi’s iconic leaning tower

Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) has revealed that glazing work on the iconic Capital Gate Tower, currently under construction next to Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, is practically complete.

More than 12,500 individually shaped glass panels have been installed on Capital Gate’s façade in a complex engineering feat which has taken ADNEC and its construction partners ten months to complete. In an intricate operation, each pane of glass had to be a slightly different shape and fitted at a different angle due to the building’s unique lean and its curved profile.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in Capital Gate’s development for the steady progress that is being made. The tower’s unique shape and character made the installation of the glazing particularly challenging for our engineers. It is a compliment to all involved that the installation took place during ADNEC’s busiest year ever for exhibitions and events, yet, there was no disruption to our visitors or exhibitors,” said Simon Horgan, ADNEC Group CEO.

Capital Gate forms the focal point of Capital Centre, the business and residential micro city being developed by ADNEC around the thriving Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. When fully complete, Capital Gate will feature the 5-star hotel - ‘Hyatt at Capital Centre’ besides playing host to some of the most exclusive office space in the UAE capital.

The glass panes on Capital Gate make up more than 700 larger glass “diamonds,” and were manufactured in the United Sates with the steel frames holding the glass precision-cut in Austria before being shipped to the UAE. ADNEC stored the glass panels away from the construction site and delivered them as needed, on enormous flatbed trucks. Once they reached the Capital Gate construction site they were meticulously placed into the correct position by on-site engineers.

The glass used is a highly energy-efficient, low ‘e’ category glass (Cardinal 240) containing 2 layers of silver inner coating allowing a high degree of natural light to permeate the building, while shielding users from harmful glare.

“The use of this advanced variety of glass is a ‘first’ for the UAE. The ‘pressure-plate’ system that has been developed for the steel frame which holds each pane in place guarantees the watertightness of the façade and allows thinner panes of glass to be used, thereby reducing the weight of the glazing system,” said Tony Archibold, Associate Director of RMJM, the international architectural firm that has designed Capital Gate.

“The lean and curve of the building added considerable complexity to the glazing process; there was little margin for error and we are pleased to have worked successfully to practically complete the glazing on Capital Gate in ten months. A few glass panes have deliberately been left out to ensure that adequate ventilation exists prior to the installation of the air conditioning.” added Archibold.

Due to its unique shape, Capital Gate is being constructed on top of a concrete raft with a dense mesh of reinforced steel. The steel Diagrid sits above an extensive distribution of 490 piles that have been drilled 30m underground to accommodate the gravitational and wind loads. The angles and dimensions of the building facade have been meticulously designed to ensure that each individually shaped panel accurately defines the shape of this magnificent structure.

UPDATE: Progress on Abu Dhabi's Capital Gate

by Orlando Crowcroft on Jun 2, 2010

ADNEC is putting the finishing touches to its ‘gravity defying’ tower in Abu Dhabi. Michael Johnson, senior project manager at ADNEC, explains.

Towering over the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (ADNEC) conference centre, the host of Abu Dhabi’s Cityscape event, Capital Gate had a captive audience back in May.

The iconic tower, famed for its 18 degree lean – which is steeper than the Leaning Tower of Pisa – has been under construction since 2007, and all of the major work has now finished. As of April 2010, workers at Capital Gate had clocked 6.5 million man hours, and at the peak of construction there were more than 1,200 workers on site.

The question on everyone’s lips, of course, is how ADNEC got the building to lean. Michael Johnson, senior project manager at ADNEC, explains that the floor plates throughout the building are more or less the same size, and up to level 12 are stacked vertically on top of each other.

“Between levels 12 and 29 the plates stagger over each other, in relation to the lean and twist of the shell, by between 800 to 1,400mm and then back to 900mm – which is 4m floor to floor. Between the 29th storey and the 35th, the range is between 900 and 300mm in relation to the line of the façade,” he said.

The lean, of course, puts immense pressure on the core of the building, which uses vertical post-tensioning to resist the stress. The core has been built with vertical pre-cambering and contains more than 15,000m3 of concrete reinforced with 10,000 tons of steel.

Capital Gate’s shell comprises a super-strong exo-skeleton called a ‘diagrid’ that provides a clear, unobstructed floor plate, using far less steel than a conventional structural frame. The external diagrid has more than 720 members with some of the heaviest weighing 16.5 tons.

All in all Johnson says Capital Gate was an ambitious and exciting project to work on.

“I have worked on some interesting projects in my career, but none of the others comes close in terms of complexity,” he said.

“We have used techniques on this tower which have never before been attempted anywhere in the world, such as the development of the world’s first pre-cambered core. These are things that will be studied by students of architecture for years to come.”

Work on the exterior façade of the tower is now complete, although the installation of the bridge that links to the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre is still underway. ADNEC are now primarily focused on the interior of the projects, including kitting out 20,000m2 of office space and a 20,000m2 luxury Hyatt hotel.

“Interior fit-out of the hotel floors is currently ongoing, as is installation of all MEP services . Construction of the helipad is also ongoing and landscape design is expected to commence over the coming months,” Johnson said.

CONSTRUCTION TIMELINE

• September 2007 Enabling works commence
• April 2008 Core wall construction starts
• February 2009 Façade work commences
• May 2009 Capital Gate reaches 100m in height
• October 2009 Attains final height of 160m
• December 2009 Completion of exterior core structure
• February 2010 Interior fit-out commences
• March 2010 Work on link bridge to Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre begins
• April 2010 Work on of atrium roof begins
• End 2010 Expected completion of construction
• Opening date To be confirmed

Capital Gate tilts in Abu Dhabi's favour to secure top spot in Guinness

World's Furthest Leaning Manmade Tower overtakes Italy's Tower of Pisa

Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Company (Adnec) said Saturday its Capital Gate in Abu Dhabi has been certified as the ‘World's Furthest Leaning Manmade Tower,' by Guinness World Records.

Adnec said in a statement that Capital Gate has been "built to lean 18 degrees westwards — more than four times that of the world famous Leaning Tower of Pisa", adding that it earned the Guinness recognition after rigorous evaluation by the Awards Committee since January, when the exterior of the 160-metre, 35-storey tower was completed.

"Capital Gate is a landmark development for Abu Dhabi and with this recognition the tower takes its place among the world's great buildings. It is a signature building which speaks of the foresight of the emirate," Adnec's Chairman Shaikh Sultan Bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan was quoted in the statement as saying.

Speaking to Gulf News by telephone, Paul Vincent, Adnec's Marketing Director said that the iconic tower has possibly the "strongest core of any tower in the world and is symbolic of Abu Dhabi's and the UAE's commitment to the future and in particular, Abu Dhabi's 2030 vision for the city and the emirate."

"The Capital Gate tower will help draw world's attention to Abu Dhabi," Vincent added.

However, he declined to be drawn into the construction cost of the project. Vincent said the tower will also have a 189-room Hyatt Capital Gate hotel, which is expected to be operational by the end of this year. He said the process of leasing for offices in the Capital Gate tower will start shortly.
