Ok I guess it's time for me

I come from Prague and I lived there for 9 years, then I moved to Eindhoven, the Netherlands. I hope that I will start studying architecture or urbanism in about two years.

As far as I know, Toronto with its suburbs (together with Paris, Münich and Switzerland) was a new home to many people in exile during the communist dictatorship.. I knew some of them.. are you one of them?

Btw your czech is good

yeah i have one :restaurant "praha' in Masaryktown( a czech "ghetto" ,its not really a ghetto, its just a few buildings which belongs to a czech organisation ,so most people who live there are Czechs)..its in scarborough ,on scarborough golf club road 450...they have very good food there( best schnitzel in Toronto according to many people). I think there where other czech restaurants in Toronto, but i donno if they're still there...

Dekuji..i know quite a lot Czechs here, i think there where 20000 Czechs here in the 80's or so, but nowadays probably there're less here (maybe 10000+ another 50,000 or so who are canadians with czech ancestry, there are 80.000 czech canadians according to wikipedia , the most famous probably being Tomas J. Bata
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_J._Bata)
....and no i'm not one of them.

Oo man! A Country club?!?
They wouldnt accept me

I was hoping somewhere in the Annex or like....in some sort of mix Slovakian-Czech place.

I guess all the Czech's are now integrated into Canadian society. There was this one Czech guy I recall in my Gr. 10 class. He was Jewish. He was 18, i was 16...and was doing Gr. 10 Science for some reason. Wore some cool clothes for someone from 1998!

I dont know... The only Czech Canadians that i can come think of is Petr Nedved who defected to Canada after playing a youth tournament in Calgary. It was only 10 months before the velvet revolution.... but he was no real Canadian.

Other than that, Bata suprised me a little...
the only name after Bata and Nedved that i came think of....

is our Karla Homolka.... Our famous female serial killer

OMH:

Thanks for interesting stats. So about 80,000 Canadiens of Czech origin... Similar number to Chicago Czechs ...

Kappa21:

The tennis player Jana Nejedly is a Canadian born in Czechoslovakia. I think her career is over very probably, I have not hear about her couple of seasons and she is about 33 or 34 now I thing (still younger than Nedved the crip ) ...

Ivan Reitman is a famous Canadian film.
He made a couple of famous movies

Born in Czechoslovakia

no, it isn't a country club or anything like that..anybody can visit the restaurant, its just that the area is mostly Czech -populated.
P.S..are you czech too? just wondering because you seem to have a high interest in the Czech republic..

Barbarians still outnumber Czechs nearly 2:1
Do more people admire CZ than actually live there?

Come to Sydney - we have 6, plus 2 clubs (and one of them a country club!)

I would be interested to try Czech food in the US. When I last went there I found American food terrible with every cuisine dumbed down til it was tasteless (like Hollywood! ). I wonder how Czech-Slovak cuisine survives. Fortunately in Australia we still like authenticity - anybody who tried to compromise a svickova would be thrown in the sea (well maybe the country club deserves that! )

Amersfoort, isn't that a sister-city for Liberec? I've heard about it somewhere

So I'm from Slovakia(Modra,BA) and I was in Prague few times and I realy like the city.Last summer I was with drummer from my band in Opava for buying some drums.I did not see whole town, but centre was beautiful.Looks like you Czechs dont have so many differences between west and east part of republic.Good for you.So good luck and you are welcome to check our Slovak forum.
