I think "nationality" of beer depends on where it was originally created. If the owner is German it doesn't mean it's German beer. Now breweries usually have foreign owners and plenty of beers aren't produced in the town of their origin. E.g. Velkopopovický Kozel is AFAIK produced also in Veľký Šariš, Slovakia, but it doesn't mean it's Slovak beer.

BTW, I agree usually the smaller brewery the better.

re

i am not patriot in this one my most favourite beer is Heineken, from our beers i love Svijany (11° = Svijanský Máz), it's sweet, but bitter taste stay in your mouth, wonderful ^_^

we have also family brewery here in Liberec (Lukášov) it is named Vendelín, very strong and bitter, not too good for me, but worth to try for locals (it is quite a route to get to Lukášov)...

I somewhere heard that Svijany is having great boom, with rapid increase of production, and it's fully in czech hands, so it's good.

Vendelín seems to be popular also abroad, few times listed in what-to-do lists.. there are better things to do I think, but why not

Oh my, Heineken... and we have so many good beers made here. There's definitely enough to choose from, looking up my stats I had 62 Czech (88 in total) beer brands this year, and most of them are rather good.

Edit: the rise of Svijany is obvious, few years back they were hard to stumble upon in their own region, now "their" pubs are popping up everywhere - and their market share is ~2%.

Anyway smaller breweries are growing in general, which is definitely a good thing. As production of larger ones decreased, they started to notice that they're probably doing something wrong and some have even taken action already - sadly, many of them just in the marketing area (yes, I mean you, Prazdroj).

On the other hand, Vyškov brewery is on the edge of being shut down just now. Rumours are running around of previous overpriced purchases of malt etc. The last plan of the state owned company (Jihomoravské pivovary - JP) was to rent the whole brewery instead of closing it down, but only two companies were allowed to make a bid and only one made it in time, but it was discarded due to a low price and different idea of what to do with the brewery - I mean, what the hell, why was it addressed at all? Another bid, which came from Kout brewery, was first discarded for being delivered too late according to JP, but that was found not being true. So then it was discarded because the company wasn't called in by JP...

Maybe it´s for the best if Vyškov brewery will be shut down. I´d rather drink glass of mud than 10° vyškov

On the other hand, I really appreciate that Svijany is spreading also in South Moravia region

Another victory for small Czech nation over Yankee global imperium LOL!:

http://www.radio.cz/en/article/130311

I wonder about this argument and I have given my opinion to Budvar but personally I think they should stick to their Czech identity (Budějovický Budvar) and not draw attention to that very vile cordial that the Americans produce. By using the name Budweiser they risk confusing people who drink the American product that they are drinking Czech beer and wonder why it is so terrible. Counterproductive imo.

Anyway it is nearly a century since the end of the Austro-Hungarian imperium and Ceske Budejovice is no longer known by its German name. No longer an issue imo. All they need to defend against is the Americans trying to stop them using the Budvar brand.

Anyway I think anyone who actually drinks US Budweiser should be arrested by the taste police and jailed for crimes against gastronomy.

I have not tried drinking a bear (medved) but I imagine it would not be good for your health or longevity, especially if it was a North American grizzly. Beer is definitely safer and essential for a long and happy life.

[Czech Republic] Beer Beer Beer

Beer in Czech Republic Thread.Do you like Czech beer?

History :
Beer in the Czech Republic (Czech: pivo) has a long and important history. The first brewery is known to have existed in 1118. The city of Brno had the right to brew beer from the 12th century, and the two cities most associated with Czech beer, Plzeň and České Budějovice (Pilsen and Budweis in German), had breweries in the 13th century

The Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world.

The most famous Czech beer brands are Pilsner Urquell and Budweiser Budvar.
Czech have around 95 beer brands. Most on the world

Near my house I can find an imported Czech beer called Budejovicky Budvar, żis the same as the Budweiser Budvar? The logo looks like the same.
I like it very much BTW.

I found a picture:

Besides the brand you can read the rest of the texts in spanish.

Now here's a thread for me. Simply put, I love beer. I enjoy different beer styles and I like to explore new breweries and beer brands (call it collecting tastes, if you like). I try to keep my average around 2 beers a day, though. It's hard.

People in CZ like to think that they know beer, but sadly, it's not exactly true. Yes, our per capita consumption is highest in the world. But most consumers are stuck with their favourite brand (or worse, cheapest brand - usually imported from Poland - that can be bought in the nearest supermarket) and have never tasted any different style than the ubiquitous lager. Overall, I think that most people prefer quantity over quality, but hey, it's their choice and I'm not going to convince them to do otherwise. At least not too hard.

Despite what I've written in previous paragraph, I perceive the current trend as a positive one - the situation had been much worse 10 or even 5 years ago. Number of pubs have switched from big "eurobeer" brands to smaller breweries in recent years, as people were probably bored by the stuff, and annoyed by deteriorating quality in number of cases as well. The big foreign breweries, which threatened the existence of many traditional Czech beer brands (and actually succeeded in ruining several), have ultimately caused their renaissance - the production of big, usually foreign owned brands, is generally declining, while smaller breweries are growing.

Some people are also brewing their own beer at home - it's actually not too difficult thing to do, just a bit messy and it takes up a lot of space in your fridge (ahh, the lucky cellar owners). And of course, perfectly legal unless you sell the stuff or make more than 200 litres per year. Not that anyone is going to find out, if you do.

The number is more like 140 (including brewpubs). And luckily, with the current revival of small breweries it's growing steadily. But despite that, there are more breweries in Bavaria alone...

Yup, it's the same.

Edit: oops, seems like I got carried away a bit. And man, it made me thirsty.
