my contribution to the topic
As you can see, not being immigrants we would be in serious demographic slump nowadays. But this inflow will not last forever and our born/death rate will be soon <1 again...
But our planet is overcrowded after all so I think this trend is not that bad...

Following this logic, you should replace "Czechs" by "Češi" and "Germans" by "Deutsch" (or Deutschies?) in english language.

Welfare creates degeneration. Degeneration creates political corectness...

When I was in Prague and Brno...i didnt see any Gypsies...
or maybe i did

I was around Nadrazi Holesovice Station, finding my way with 2 british broads when i saw a kid....or then again a midget...who had 2 earings, was kinda dark and was smoking.....
I was like This kid had to be like 5 or 6...how can he smoke?!?!

Than i was around the Charles bridge underneath and i saw a lady beg?

Where are all the gypsies? And what is the main arguement with them/against them?

Are they accepted? Do they commit crimes? Do they live in poverty? Refuse Czech identity?

Our demographic crisis is not that much about the natural population decline but the forthcoming rapid aging. Who will feed the army of Czech retirees which is to form 1/3 of the population by 2050? Our illustrious political leaders are obviously unable to come up with some reasonable reform of pensions.

Yeah, we don't find gypsies here in America, but I used to live in a city where there was a Roma minority.

Why people hate them?

1) Practice of Black arts.
2) Thefts. Well known for that.
3) They never settle anywhere. One dday they are here, tomorrow they are in another place doing their things.
3) I don't know how it is in Czech, but they live in rundown wagons, settling temporarily in public parks or public squares. Then the park gets a bad image, it can be a dangerous and scary place for Non- Roma people.
4) Everywhere they go they are loud and always asking for money while their companions are sleeping on public sidewalks.
5) Have you seen those people who play the flute trying to wake up an viper? Well, those are the gypsies. The saddest thing is that they put a living monkey near the viper and sometimes the monkeys get killed by the snake.
6) You think the jews had it difficult living in Europe. The Roma people always had it worse. Everywhere they go they are extremly discriminated and treated like garbage.
7) Many used to be pagans, now they are becoming more Chritians.

To be sincere with you I have nothing against Roma people. Even though, many of them are like this, many are vert smart. They taught me a lot.

Try to read the Gypsy history timeline. Not even the jewish timeline is so sad as their history.

True, true. If someone has population pyramids, current and prospective, it would be useful to show them in this thread.

I had a Czech grandma, her last name was Wackowitz or Wichowitz or something like that. I am not sure if she was a Jew, but I think she immigrated to Czech Repu from someother place (maybe) before coming to America. Is the last name Wackowitz or Wichowitz or Vichovickz or something like that from Czechoslovakia?

It is possible.

As for the jews, there aren't many of them.. they were persecuted by Nazis and communists didn't liked them too, so most of them emigrated to Israel and N.America.. In every bigger city, they are some jew communities..

we have reached 10,4 mio ppl, biggest number since 1945
1st quarter of 2008: The surplus of live births over deaths was 2,030, the increase by migration was 20.0 thousands (While the number of immigrants (21.1 ths.) corresponds to that of the previous year, the registered number of emigrants was only 1.1 ths. (532 Czech citizens and 614 foreigners), i.e. by 3 thousands less than in the first quarter of 2007.)

quite alarming...

I do not think it is that alarming.

Immigrance... Most of the immigrants are from Ukraine and some others from former Soviet Union (and Vietnam). If they find a job and do unattractive work in factories and constructions, I don t mind. We need them, because the new Czech generation won t work manually any more. And Ukrainians are far more closer in matter of culture and language than let say Pakistanies or Egyptians. And due to this reason Czech rep. is relatively attractive for them as well(unlike for Islamic).

Births... The strong 1973-1979 generation have children. This trend will be over in 5-7 years... Gypsies have always been growing fast, just we did not realize it in stats, because the total number was stagnating.
