Hi, szíasztok

My PC is having problems navigating on this thread, but I am glad I have found it.

I live in a commie in the 14th district. I bought it, which maybe is not quite such a commie thing to do. I once lived in a tower block in the UK, maybe a set of flats designed by a commie architect, but they looked a little more idiosyncratic than the ones on view here. I liked it for the quality of the light. I was there for 6 years.

Alas, now I find that out of the 9 on the estate where I used to live, only 2 still stand, though mine is one of these. The UK does not really get on with high-rises, which may have set a precedent for the flats' getting a bad name and keeping it. But I was still gutted to hear they had ben demolished.

It was decided that whilst structurally sound, they were 'obselete,' which could mean anything from someone deciding they are ugly, ot too expensive to rebusrbish.

I don't know if my commie will get refurbished or not, but from what the caretaker says, it needs it.

The quality of light here is good too.

Hi, welcome. I do not think it is your pc that is causing trouble navigating here, it is rather the site itself.

Hi Kese

Thanks, good to know it is not my PC then.

Anyway, hopefully there will be no ambitious Blairite projects to pull down flats that might be in the way of new developments here, too often.

This kind of progress seems to avoid us, even though I could imagine some changes here. E.g.: M0 Eastern section was on hold for way too long because someone's shack's "emotional value".

Yes, commieblocks are not usually demolished in Hungary. Actually most of them are not bad statically or anything, it's usually just the insulation being bad and the originally installed poor elevators, electric systems etc. decaying. It can be fixed at reasonable costs, if you visit the thread about my city you will see lots of examples for such renovations (though unfortunately they are not so widespread in Budapest). Of course demolishing them and building more modern and humane buildings would be a better choice, but if you live in a commieblock in Hungary it's usually not because you could afford a brand new apartment

Hi everyone,

In the Bulgarian forum we have a huge discussion about the future renovation of the commie blocks, especially in Sofia, and we were wondering how this process happened in Hungary. For the moment it's through EU funds that the country is going to do the work but people have many questions. It would be really kind if someone answers how were the problems solved in Hungary.

So our questions are were people forced to leave their apartments during the works? Are they generally owners of the apartments? If they had to live for a moment elsewhere did the country provide some help or it was up to everyone to find a place? And one more, how did the country/municipality help for the poorer people in a block who couldn't afford even a state guaranteed, low interest rate loans.

Thanks for any answer

No. I've withnessed such works personally, as I acompanied my grandmother during the works. Outer reconstruction is no big hassle inside. The interior works take a day, in the morning the outer non-concrete walls are torn out completelly, repleaced by new PVC walls, new windows, it gets sealed, and its done by the night. Heaters and such are no big deal either.

Thanks a lot The discussion is quite heated, as we didn't experience huge renovations yet and your answer helps a lot. And do you know if there were any funds/help for poor people? If an entire block decides to renovate I guess there will be a family or two who couldn't afford or didn't want to do it. How was this sorted out?

There is a programme for the commie blocks, where 1/3 of the costs are paid by the government, 1/3 of the costs are paid by the local government (city), and 1/3 of the costs are paid by the residents.

The residents are paying it as a part of the common costs, so this is not a huge amount of money. (Especially, that a renovated flat is more valuable, and they can save money on heating costs)

Sounds like a really good way of dealing with the problem. It is and will be quite different in Bulgaria and the result is seen in this thread, your commies are in much better condition. Thanks a lot

There is no way for those who dont wish to take part skipping the works if they are the minority though. If the majority of the house decides to go along with the project, you also must open your wallet.

I see, this is exactly the main part of the discussion Thanks. We will see, I hope something big and effective is done and we end up with nicely renovated commies like yours.
