After all, I wouldn't think that Southwest Floridians have much more in common with, say, Miamians than with Pensacolans.

That said, things have changed since then. Sociologically and politically, Orange Countians are looking more like Dade Countians (than the rest of the state) these days. In fact, the change has been rather rapid.

But regardless how you carve it up, secession would afford the opportunity of Floridians to cast their lots with this or that new entity. So, if you divided the state in such a manner as to include both Orlando and South Florida, folks now in, say, Sebring might move north, whereas folks in, say, Mount Dora might move south.

In any case, you're never going to make everyone happy. Not everyone was happy in 1861. My family on both sides was staunchly Southern. Yet, there were also abolitionists in my family.

good point about Orange County, I noticed that too.

Boundary-wise, I assume PBCo.

Also in Illinois, Chicago is the only city that has a noteworthy skyline. Orlando, Jacksonville, and Tampa all have noteworthy skylines outside of South Florida. That having been said, I've often wondered what kind of skyline Florida would have if all of its high rises were in one city, like all of Illinois' are in Chicago. Tampa and Jacksonville both have buildings over 500 feet tall, and don't forget the Vehicle Assembly building at the Kennedy Space Center that was built to house the Saturn V rocket that put man on the moon. Florida has 400-footers all over the place that are not counted as part of a particular skyline, so I just wonder what that would be like some times.

How about the Panhandle west of Tallahassee being absorbed by Alabama and the Panhandle east of Tallahassee (and north of Orlando) being absorbed by Georgia ? Then both would at least have some respectable skylines to crow about.
