That doesn't help me understand how they were able to
1) Convince the public to believe in redeveloping downtown 2) Get retail downtown 3) Get support for mass transit 4) Keeping the Urban design Maybe they just had a consistent city council. I don't understand why our councilmen and women always pick and chose their battles. |

Well, lucky they got all that in before Wachovia/First Union fell apart and BoA was forced to buy Merrill Lynch. I think they will have a slightly harder time. On the other hand, Charlotte is the biggest metro in NC so it also has the advantage of getting more respect form the state for money. NO mouse or MIami to fight with

I got a response back from Phillip Smith. He said a rendering was shown at the council meeting but he "doesn't have it in a distributable format."
Anyone know if the council meeting will be replayed on TV, and if so if they can somehow take a picture of it when is on the screen?

Gah... I'll see if I can track it down through my limited connections with the city.
btw, I've seen the renderings before... It's a handsome building, fashioned as a modern interpretation of 'Chicago' Deco, as opposed to 'Miami' Deco. I forget the height I saw... 3-something... I do wish that they were doing something different with the siting of the parcel and the building's form, but that is neither here nor there. What Crosland is trying to do will be good for the neighborhood. |

Actually I answeed my own question regarding height... They have to read the specs in the hearing... So we know exactly how tall the building is planned to be.
The apartment tower is now given as 27 floors, 340feet tall, 418 apartments... An 8 story garage in a 2nd structure includes 541 parking spaces, with a height of 120ft. There is 13.5k sqft of total retail on the ground floor of the two buildings... Quote:

He had actually told me it was a mix of the Chryslter Building and the Empire State Building. |

Hmm... The city council meeting just replayed on TV and I saw the renderings there... The facade for the Crosland tower has a vertical prominence to it, more like the Tribune Tower in Chicago in vague terms (not the shape, just the facade). It definitely didn't look like the Chrysler building. The building is a rectangle in plan, oriented along Tampa St, with the garage straddling the park to the north. The building had an atrium feature which passed through the building from Tampa St to the park, and there is an inset in the facade all the way up as a visual feature. It also had a single large setback on the north and south facades near the top, so that the building isn't just a dressed up box. I definitely think it's attractive and will probably age well in stylistic terms... I just wish that the garage had been integrated into the tower, so that a 1/4 of an acre or so could have been added to the existing park... of course, that would have cost money so...
Also, at one point Greg Minder makes mention that the Deco look they're going for is more of a 'Burnham style, not a Miami Beach style'... As folks should know, Burnham was a Chicago architect who played a role in identifying the modernistic deco style prevalent there. |

I'm sure they did... They also said in the meeting somewhere that the design could change some more, and that they would redo the garage facade to better relate to the tower in stylistic terms.

Did they give any timeline on when construction may begin?

Next year at the earliest... At this point, this is just site assembly and value-adding. Now they've got a turnkey project ready to sell to investors or another developer, just in case they decide not to pull the trigger themselves.

This is a really nice project, and in my mind pretty important to the future of Downtown Tampa.

It's that prominent location that has me wishing they had done a nicely detailed and lighted top.

^Oh yeah. Seeing this thread bumped up reminded me of that. It'd be nice to get a rendering. Even if someone has to take a picture off their TV or computer (I think meetings stream live)
Items 22, 43, 44 and 45 are the project: http://docserver.tampagov.net/cache/...62009Final.pdf Live Stream: http://www.tampagov.net/dept_cable_c...RedirectID=227 |
