I think, um... I don't really, uh... Hrmmm... I'm not really sure what to say except, 'What are we looking at here?' Recognizing that the renders are crap, so it's early to rush to judgment, I've got a couple stray thoughts:

As Hudson points out, the massing is truly bizarre. Blocky base, skinny lower, flared midsection, skinny upper and that spiky slanted crown. The architects really seem to be wrestling with a lot of weird constraints in order to come up with this shape, but the end result is... kind of icky.

It's probably a product of a shoddy render, but the gold/bronze is pretty chintzy. My guess, they're targeting the Chinese market (not intended as a slight to our Chinese forumers, but Apple made the gold iPhone for a very specific reason.) The archibabble design justification, I guess, would be that they're "hearkening to the Art Deco glory days of lower Manhattan."

And as a commenter on the TRD article astutely mentions, the bracing around the midsection seems to be paying homage to the tridents of the original WTC. But I wouldn't say they really succeed...

In total, it's honestly making me think a bit of the Zaha Hadid tower in Miami which (while I generally like her work) is not a compliment. Let's hope we see some serious refinement.

I feel like they're trying to emulate SHoP, and it's not working.

Yeah, I almost wrote "Zaha's Miami tower mashed up with 340 Flatbush" but I thought that would be doing SHoP a disservice.

Does anyone know if there are specific zoning restrictions that would force the developers to distribute their massing in such an odd way? I understand the trend of flaring outwards to create larger floorplates on the upper floors, but I really wish they would just built this thing straight up.

The top elements can make or break the design. Let's wait for HQ renders

That cantilever is really unfortunate. IMO it brings an 8.5/10 design down to a 7.5.

Agreed, I think it would have looked killer if it just went straight up.

No, not at all. I get the feeling this one could turn out kinda cool. Weird but cool.

I love those transfer beams. With some quality cladding, this could be a new masterpiece. Can't wait till they do a facade mockup.

Looks a tad off next to the modernist 60 and 55 Broad St.

55 Broad Street likely won't be there for long

Yeah indeed, so there is an option to combine the lots for more air rights. Although this site is way more ahead.

I doubt it. Dubai has many good buildings. This is would be ugly there too.

I suspect the design will change, over time, in any case.

I hope so. It has daring elements, and I'd love a tower with truly unique features but as it currently is envisioned doesn't quite work for me.

The proportions are weird, and Dubai is full of odd buildings that clash with each other.

Also the curved transition elements at the cantilever do have a sort of Middle-Eastern look.
