On Wednesday I attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the building.

This is a huge undertaking. Right at the heart of the Financial District, this building will forever change the skyline of Lower Manhattan.

I wonder how the logistics will work out here. It´s so close to the NYSE, it will need huge amounts of security to be put in place. Also the area has very narrow streets, fences that block cars and such. The site itself is pretty small too. Huge drillings will need to be done cautiously to not harm underground facilities and or foundations of surrounding buildings. It will be logistically an insane project.

"But even if it's been toned down I still find all that bronze pretty tacky. I particularly worry that it will clash with whatever glass they actually use. Ideally, the glass should be gray and translucent as depicted above, but if 50 West, 111 Murray and Madison Park Tower are any indication, we'll probably get blue and opaque -- which would look terrible."

Premonition?...I am also very pessimistic!
Also, the edge on the side of the building is a disgrace.
I could be wrong(hopefully)but there's nothing CetraRuddy has designed that enthused me...

Even the Walker Tower?! I think CetraRuddy has done some pretty decent work.

Magnificent Stella and Walker towers were designed in the late twenties by talented Ralph Walker(dubbed"the "architect of the century" by the NYT)
Cetra did the recent conversion office/condo;they are the ones who designed the mediocre Roseland Miami thing and the nasty One Madison....
Be calm, don't get excited, they're not gonna get the Pritzker!

I love this recent Neo-Art Deco style that is developing in New York right now. Buildings like 45 Broad, Flatbush Tower or Steinway Tower are all magnificent and I sincerely hope more towers like them will come up.
And on top of that there's 53W53... What a time to be alive

Wow, the new renderings look really great. Did not like the shape of the first version very much, but this looks amazing. And with that height at that location it sure will draw some attention.

Hideous. Hideous. Tacky.

And I have to look at it from my apartment.

The designs on p. 3 of this thread were so much cooler.

I'm happy to post the first progress pic. I just happened to walk by earlier this evening on my way to the J train. I didn't realize this is right across from the Stock Exchange.

It looks like they still have not gotten anything at all done on it, as that excavator has been there for several months.

As for the design, Holy Shit it became beautiful!!!! We need more of these glassy towers with cool copper cladding details to contrast with the blue boxes and general crap that keeps going up. This, 9 Dekalb, 111 West 57th, and a small number of others are the new masterpieces.

Although not overly thrilled. this looks infinitely better than the previous proposals. Still too dubai-esque.

I've never gotten that kind of comment/criticism. NY is a world city. It's not particularly bad to have buildings that look like or draw influences from around the world.

When I think of Dubai, I think of the dense supertall cluster (pictured below), which features a lot of non-glass horizontal pattern cladding.

I suppose 45 Broad wouldn't be out of place in Dubai, but it's a more dramatic design than most of those towers, and it is very vertically oriented, with lots of glass:

This tower should be a nice complement for 9 Dekalb across the river.

Its a real shame that almost all of the supertall towers in Dubai have such cheap-looking facades. The facade on this proposal is much nicer and more interesting than that of any tower of significant height in Dubai.
