The new buses look very good. Excellent job! I just wonder how durable they are and what the ride is like. Hopefully local guys will keep us updated and share their experiences when riding.

With those 84 buses in total, what percentage, approximately, of Skopje's bus fleet will be modernised?

84 total and approx. 30% will be modernized but 202 doubledeckers are scheduled for 2011-2012-2013 so more than 330 new buses and whole fleet of JSP Skopje.

Sounds really good! Congratulations once again! Are there tenders for those doubledeckers and do you know which company was awarded the contract? Or not yet?

I think Junkie is wrong.

JSP before the arriving of the new buses had 357 buses http://www.jsp.com.mk/jspinside.aspx?page=2

The LAZ buses are 84, the Yutong double-deckers are 200+2 for tourists, but one will go to Ohrid, so JSP will have 284 new standard buses, plus 1 tourist bus. From this comes that when all the buses arrive, JSP will change ~80 percent of the current number of buses.

We hope that the other 20% to be changed will be proposed for articulated buses.

I see, thanks a lot. Is there a lot of passenger volume to justify the need for articulated buses?

For example right now in Sofia a company is designing the 3rd metro line based on some really underestimated forecasts for passenger volume and instead of a metro, we are likely to end up with some sort of crappy overground LRT system. And some of us in SSC are fighting against that. I hope your city transport management doesn't underestimate to save money like the municipal company that runs our metro does.

What are the other means of transportation within the city besides buses, taxis and personal cars? Do you have shuttles/minibuses? We do in Sofia, but there's a proposal to get rid of them after their current contracts expire (sometime this summer I think) because they are causing a lot of chaos in the traffic since they stop practically everywhere and usually drive recklessly! Their reasoning is that the metro is serving many commuters since it was extended and many of these shuttles are running empty. Still, I think that our metro has very limited coverage currently and if they stop the shuttles, that would disrupt the passenger flow a lot. They just need to regulate them better like for example allow them to stop only at certain places and be less tolerant of their behavior behind the wheel.

Those are some pretty snazzy new buses. What's a fare worth on one of those things?

Yes, I am informed about the metro in Sofia.

About Skopje. Yes, there are 14 minibuses. But they are included in the official number of 357. I think JSP did buy some new, but cant recall how much. But few, not more than 7-8. Maybe I am wrong . But what is important is that they are in use. Mostly for the lines with small volume of passengers, or in the weekends. Also there are shuttles-vans from other cities. And yes, they do stop only for a need, but on the nearest bus station. Also in the public traffic take place the buses who do services for their own needs, like companies, factories. But they do not make any problems at all.

Monthly ~4 million people use the JSP services, but when we include the private buses, it comes to ~5-6 million people who use the public transport. So daily it comes to a number of ~200k passengers.

You can change pages to see everything.

We have plans to build a LRT system, which will be I think enough for Skopje in the following years. We chose two consultant-companies to make a study, to make a project and to find (+make the contract documentation) an investor - concessionaire (or investors) who will build, maintain and operate the LRT system. The consultants are EC Harris from the UK and Vialto from Hungary. Here are links to their sites.

http://www.echarris.com/

http://www.vialto.hu/

They have 1 year from the signing the contract to do their job. The contract is signed on 22 November 2010. So it is expected to the end of this year, or the beginning of 2012 the construction to get started.

Here is more info about the LRT, its routes and other info.
