What kind of foundation would this thing need??? It would need to be made of unobtanium and mounted to the solid iron inner core or else it would fall through the crust (too heavy). The only way this would be feasible is to completely remove a large mountain and then build this over what remains. The mountain's 'foundation' would be adequate.

Woow!! This proyect looks amazing but as many of you wrote before I think that for now is kind of imposible this kind of proyects in the world because of the magnitud of the proyect and all the logistics that the engeers must have to build it. In 50 or 30 year from now I think the proyect will be executed.

website says its base diameter is 6000 ft. so thats a floor area of 2.60 km2 at the base. wit 1 million ppl that comes out to 380,000/km2. i guess tahts a lot but considering teh fact that this thing is 500 stories you'd think it would be more. theres a bunch of city districts that have 100,000+/km2 and they have things like roads and stuff and the buildings are only like 20-30 stories high.

Here are some good adjectives: unfeasible, unattainable, unaffordable, unnecessary, unwanted, unattractive, and unlikely!

Guys this is just a vision, gotta think outside the box sometimes, never know what can or will be built. I seriously doubt anyone thought that a 2686ft tower would be built in the middle of a desert in the middle east, but its happening! I doubt this thing will be built too, but I can bet some ideas from it will end up in a future project.

It looks far from being realized ever, but I think this type of building, when properly designed and built, can be quite usefull and realistic. They are already plans for very high buildings, not just skycrapers but also Solar Updraft Towers, which plan to go heights from 1km and above. Actually they need to be 3-4km for most efficient enery production.
And here is an idea of how I would built it. I would simply stack up very large torus shaped concrete tubes, with diminishing diameter, so that it shapes forms the outer part of a trumpet. For each level you built, you have then a circular field in the middle. You just fill that op mostly with sand and place other structures (usable space and structures for strengthening the construction) inside, amongst which the reinforcements for the tower to be built on top of it, etc.. If you start with 5km outer diameter, you can already go quite high (1500m-2km), and that is then just the base. The actual tower can then be built on top of that. So, you could quite easiliy reach 3 km, because you have a very solid and strong foundation. I see no problem. Concrete is strong enough.
