Insane world.
Well, what is wrong with that?
Desert preservation is really important. Dubai's growth is encroaching on the desert and actions are needed to preserve the open space.

Possible 300m tower in Meydan City.

Supports this article.

Meydan prepares tender for 72-floor tower

Published: 07 October 2008 14:57 GMT Author: Colin Foreman

Tender documents are being prepared for the main tower at the Meydan racecourse development, in the Nad al-Sheba area of Dubai.
The project involves the construction of a 75-floor mixed-use tower straddling the canal and that will run though the development.

did someone say Emerald City of Oz?

Emerald Plaza by Emergent Architecture

by Olivia Chen
October 30, 2008
Inhabitat.com

Public space is essential in any urban environment, but drawing people out can be difficult when the weather makes the outdoors uncomfortable. The Emerald Plaza in Abu Dhabi by Los Angeles-based Emergent Architecture is intended to invite people out of doors despite high temperatures by offering shade and a wide expanse of space. The multi-level, modern plaza physically links the buildings surrounding it via walkways, while cooling pools help to regulate the plaza’s temperature.

Emerald Plaza’s ground-level environment acts much like a grotto, maintaining a comfortable temperature with water regulated and cooled by geothermal heat pumps. Above it, a sculptural volume is crafted from the surrounding angular geometries. This space will be used as an indoors conference and media center that overlooks the water. The pools will be filled with solar-powered lily pads and flowers to create an attractive public space for the nighttime hours, when lower temperatures will make both the lower and upper terraces more inviting.

According to www.ctbuh.org some of the heights for the towers listed here are different.

The following heights are in conflict:

Anara Tower - 655m
Infinity Tower - 307m
Khalid Al Attar Tower - 295m
Al Yacoub Tower - 328m
Dynamic Architecture Building - 388m

I emailed them about these buildings. Hopefully they will reply.

Let's check how things are progressing.

The following towers are all well under construction (around 20 floors or more)
  • 1 Burj Dubai - 819m
  • 2 Princess Tower - 414m
  • 3 23 Marina - 395m
  • 4 Emirates Park Towers - 395m, 395m
  • 5 Almas Tower - 360m
  • 6 Al Attar Tower - 342m
  • 7 The Torch - 338m
  • 8 The Index - 328m
  • 9 Al Yacoub Tower - 328m
  • 10 HHHR Tower - 317m
  • 11 Ocean Heights - 310m

I think everything above will be finished.

There are three more towers in Dubai Marina which are starting to rise now, all have their cores above ground but the floorplates haven't reached yet.
I recon Infinity Tower will definitely be built but one of the other two may go on hold, hopefully not though and they all get finished.
  • 12 Marina 101 - 412m
  • 13 Elite Residence - 380m
  • 14 Infinity Tower - 307m

Now below I will list projects where groundwork is underway.
  • 15 Nakheel Tower - 1000m
  • 16 Pentominium - 618m (516m roof)
  • 17 One Park Avenue - 600m (maximum)
  • 18 Burj Al Alam - 510m
  • 19 Damac Heights - 460m
  • 20 Marina 106 - ~420m
  • 21 Lighthouse Tower - 402m
  • 22 LamTara Towers - 360m, 320m

Here is what I think of each project:

Nakheel Tower - Insane project, will become only a vision soon enough I think, despite the fact that work is going on at the site. Nakheel always make ridiculous decisions and completely overstretch themselves and now they're in trouble. They put the trump tower on hold and they expect to build this tower that is 10 times bigger and even more times more expensive?

Pentominium - Very ambitious project but the developer is very good. Unlike the usual Dubai developers the towers from these guys are all well under construction, the one furthest behind (not including this one of course) will top out in a few months. I doubt they sold much since the location is not good and the project is extreme luxury (you need the best location for that) but we will see. I think this one has a bigger chance of getting built than most. They don't have a main contractor yet though.

One Park Avenue - Tower in Meraas's Jumeirah Gardens project where work has been going on for a few months. I have big doubts on this one since I believe the whole Jumeirah Gardens project will wither away slowly into the sand.

Burj Al Alam - Very very little chance of seeing this done. This tower was problematic even before the credit crunch so now what do you expect. They sold at prices that were too low and it's been at ground work forever. I think they are just moving around a vehicle or two each day to look like they're doing something but really nothing is being done.

Damac Heights - Another Damac project in the marina. Only small chance of being built but I think more than burj al alam but less that pentominium. The foundation contractor is on site and is doing only a little bit of work but they have to wait before Infinity is completely out of the ground before serious excavation.

Marina 106 - Completely unknown project. Can't make any predictions here. They probably won't sell any apartments here but rent them out at the end, or else turn it into a hotel or something.

Lighthouse Tower - Piling well underway on this tower in DIFC. I recon has about the same chance of getting finished as the pentominium (ie, not a lot but not extremely unlikely either)

LamTara Towers - Same as burj al alam, has been at ground work for ages and I think it's probably on hold now, or if not will be very soon. They didn't sell anything since foreigners can't own apartments in the SZR towers but still don't think anything will get done. Developer is probably crap.

Also renders of a proposed beachfront hotel tower in dubai marina (opposite end to the tallest block). It's a very nice tower but it's very unknown and has stayed that way since last year. It will probably go the same way as al sharq, etc. It's 302.4m high.

Just to keep an eye on things, here is the progress of dubai supertalls.

First the bad news

Nakheel Tower - On Hold (maybe not yet but will soon be for sure)
Meraas Towers - Probably on hold / never built / cancelled, etc
Anara Tower - Cancelled
Burj Al Alam - Insanely slow work being done there
Dubai Towers - Probably cancelled since the company is in a mess
Signature Towers - "indefinite hold"
Damac Heights - On Hold

Now the good news

All supertalls except for damac heights in the marina have good progress being done and a good lot in the SZR area as well. These are:

SZR
-Burj Dubai - 818m
-Lighthouse Tower - 402m
-Emirates Park Towers - 395m
-Al Attar Tower - 342m
-The Index - 328m
-Al Yacoub Tower - 328m
-HHHR Tower - 317m

In the marina area
-Pentominium - 618m
-Marina 106 - ~430m
-Princess Tower - 414m
-Marina 101 - 412m
-23 Marina - 395m
-Elite Residence - 380m
-Almas Tower - 360m
-The Torch - 338m
-Ocean Heights - 310m
-Infinity Tower - 307m

Who will be left standing when the economic crisis is over?
That's still 18 supertalls that have good progress. If anybody doesn't think that is good then

I updated the list, not the descriptions with the renders though.

In 2015 we will see the following supertalls I think:

1: Burj Dubai - 818m
2: Princess Tower - 414m
3: Marina 101 - 412m
4: 23 Marina - 395m
5+6: Emirates Park Towers - 395m (although I think a little less)
7: Elite Residence - 380m
8: Almas Tower - 360m
9: Emirates Tower 1 - 355m
10: Al Attar Tower - 342m (although some of the spire may be left out)
11: The Torch - 338m
12: Rose Rotana - 333m
13: Al Yacoub Tower - 328m
14: The Index - 328m
15: Burj Al Arab - 321m
16: HHHR Tower - 313m
17: Ocean Heights - 310m
18: Emirates Tower 2 - 309m
19: The Address - 306m

And for the spire haters:

1: Burj Dubai
2: Princess Tower
3: Marina 101
4: 23 Marina
5+6: Emirates Park Towers
7: Elite Residence
8: Almas Tower
9: Emirates Tower 1
10: The Torch
11: Rose Rotana
12: Al Yacoub Tower
13: The Index
14: Ocean Heights

Although Marina 101 and Elite Residence could go on hold I think, just a feeling. I don't think they will but wouldn't surprise me if they did.

£53bn of development suspended in Dubai

3 February, 2009

By David Rogers

Report by HSBC reveals huge scale of postponement or cancellation of construction schemes in the emirate

A report by banking giant HSBC has said that almost $75bn (£53bn) worth of property schemes have been put on hold in Dubai.

The firm made the comments in a note on Arabtec, one of the emirate's largest contractors and which is helping build the world's tallest tower - the Burj Dubai.

In its report, HSBC lists 59 projects that are under review, including eight that have been cancelled. The bank said high-end residential schemes and commercial developments were those most at risk of being shelved.

In the note, HSBC said: “The worst of news has seen cancellations of entire projects even though they appeared in advanced stages of construction.”

Nakheel has been the most high-profile developer to delay or cancel projects, including its Trump Towers hotel and residential project as well as its answer to the 818m-high Burj Dubai - the 1km-tall tower scheme.

Nakheel's problems have affected a number of UK firms, with as many as 200 jobs believed to be under threat after the company began a consultation with staff last month.

Arabtec is one of several firms bidding for the Saadiyat Beach Residences residential scheme in Abu Dhabi. Also in the mix are believed to be Dutco Balfour Beatty, the British giant's Middle East business, Belgian contractor Besix, which is also working on the Burj Dubai, and Multiplex.

The Saadiyat scheme will feature luxury houses and an 18-hole golf course designed by South African golfer Gary Player.

What I'm thinking about supertalls of Dubai !

Towers & status & my opinion !

1.) Nakheel Tower >1000m
Think this one is dead ! Let's wait - maybe a redesign is following after the crunch is over !

2.)Burj Dubai 819m
Topped out - tower will be done in 2009/10

3.) Pentominium 618m
Ground work going on ! Think it will go through !

4.) Burj Al Alam 510m
I don't think we will see this one under construction ! Ground work for ages ! In my opinion we will see another tower on this plot ! A shame but we have to accept it !

5.) Dubai Towers
Here the same ! The whole project is to expensive ! Don't think there will be any progress for the next years - we have to look again if the crunch is over ! Also a shame because of the nice design !

6.) Damac Heights 426m
The design is awesome - but we will never see it in reality ! Shame No. III There will be a tower on the plot ! Maybe also with a height of 350-400 meters, but this design will never be there... !

7.) Princess Tower 414m
Tower has reached 50 floors and is good underway ! Maybe will top out by first quarter of 2010 !

8.) Marina 101 412m
Well underway ! At 10 floors around !

9.) Lighthouse Tower 402m
Piling well underway ! In my opinion this one will go through !

10.) 23 Marina 395m
Slow progress but this will 100 % go through !

11.) Emirates Park Towers 395m+395m
At floor 30-40 ! Will defenetly go through 100 % !

12.) Elite Residence 380m
Core at floor number 10 around ! 100 % sure it goes through !

13.) P-17 379m
Hard to say what's happening with this one here ! No news for a long time. My feeling says we have to wait till the crunch is over and than it will go through ! Chance 40-50 %

14.) The Wave Tower 370m
There will be a big delay of the Waterfront and this one is located there ! We also have to wait till the delay is over. Chance for me at 30 % !

15.) Almas Tower 363m
Almost done ! Should be the next supertall which is done in Dubai ! Done maybe at summer 2009

16.) Al Sharq Tower 360m
This one should be dead ! No news for ages !

17.) Lam Tara Towers 360m+???m
Ground work for years ! Hope it goes through, but I doubt it - chance for me at 30 % !

18.) The Torch 338m
Well underway - around floor 50 ! Will top out by end of the year I think !

19.) Al Yaquob Tower 330m
Also well underway ! Will also top out by end of the year !

20.) The Skyscraper 330m
Some ground work going on ! But the chances for me are at 50 % for this tower to go through ! Want see it but doubts are there !

21.) The Index 328m
Tower has topped out ! Should be done by middle to end of the year 2009 !

22.) HHHR Tower 317m
Tower has almost topped out ! Maybe also done by end of the year ! Good progress there !

23.) Ocean Heights 310m
Fast progress there ! Should top out by end of the year ! Awesome looking one and every week you can see the progress !

24.) Infinity Tower 307m
Core at floor 10 around ! Good progress after a 1 year delay because of the wallbreak ! Will 100 % go through !

25.) Oasis Beachfront Hotel 302m
??? Very hard to say ! We have to wait till we have new informations ! Chance for me at 25-50 %

26.) Ahmed Abdul Rahim Al Attar Tower 301m or 342m (we have no source for 342m height)
This one has already toppd out ! Spire on top is still missing ! Cladding in slow progress but goes on !

27.) Marina 106 107fl
Ground work going on ! Think this one has a chance of 80-90 % to go through !

28.) Burj Al Fattan 106fl
Demolishing of the old hotel is very slow but I think this one will happen ! Chance at maybe 70 %

Done towers at the moment :

1.) Emirates Office Tower 355m
2.) Rose Tower 333m
3.) Burj Al Arab 321m
4.) Jumeirah Emirates Tower Hotel 309m
5.) The Adress Downtown Burj Dubai 306m

Including the 5 done towers I think we will have 24 done towers over 300 meter at 2015 !
That's really realistic and a WOW-effect !!

Hope some new super-/megatalls will come out if the crunch is over ! Maybe at Jumeirah Gardens City and Waterfront !

DIFC supertall is still missing ! Also the other towers above - maybe one or two go through !!
