What a massive improvment. Watch out midtown, the best skyline in the world is LM soon.

So many new skyscrapers are missing from this new rendering though, but it sill looks great and lit up well.

Height increase would be decorative or functional? They re-clad their building on 41st street too.

I prefer the original, at least it says something about the time it was originally built.

Cities across the country are taking down cladding that at one time was thought to improve a building's appearance.

Such endeavors are usually destined for failure. Eventually, the offending facade will be seen as infinitely "cooler" than its camoflauge.

Yea, I do agree that some buildings need an update, while others should stay the same if practical. I can't help but think they are doing this to decrease lighting costs and other factors, not solely for looks.

I think their turing it into condos, so the small windows wouldnt be very attractive to potential buyers.

A switching center? I dunno bout that. They reclad their other building and it's still verizon owned & operated. I think they wanted it to compliment the new BOA tower across the street.

Verizon Building To Stay Ugly!

TRD

Seattle firm to turn telephone building into mighty data center
February 15, 2012 12:00PM

Seattle-based data center developer Sabey is set to transform the New York Telephone Company building at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge into one of the largest data centers in the city, the New York Times reported.

The 1975 building, which has been vacant for many years, was purchased by Sabey for $120 million in partnership with Youngwoo & Associates last year; it will have approximately one million square feet with access to 40 megawatts of electricity when it opens, enough to power 2,000 average-size homes.

[...]
Sabey has no plans to reclad the exterior while it intends to gut the interior for its data center operation. Verizon will continue to occupy a small amount of space in the tower.

Intergate, 375 Pearl St.

That sucks. For that money I would've redeveloped it into an apartment building already. The views and location are perfect! This building is cursed.
