OK the GTC (Gradski Trgovski Centar) is going to go under reconstruction and expansion next year. According to the original plan (which was not fully realized) it is missing out one more level. Here is the project that won the competition. The new level will primarily be focused on leisure and not shopping with the exception of the glass structure which will be for offices (I think).

actually we renamed it from Shopping centers => Retail complexes for the reason that we want to stuff supermarkets, hypermarkets, malls, shopping centers etc in the same thread and this name covers them all.
Well IMO shopping centers covers all these but whatever.....I guess you have to be a slovenian for your suggestions to be accepted in the macedonian subforum coffrealekcoff

Open-air cinema?! are you sure? it looks to me like it is normal cinema just see-trough bird perspective.
Open-air cinema is a bad investment.

I'm not sure but I think it is. I think the roof of GTC should offer lots of outdoor leisure and recreation area as Skopje has steady 6 months of warm climate. Again I'm not 100% sure but there are about to set up a web site for the project as part of its participation on the Venice bienale so we'll surely get more details.

Danish bedding retailer JYSK opens its first store in Macedonia:

29.05.2008

Today, the first store is opening in Macedonia in the Balkans in the town of Tetovo, which situated to the west of the capital, Skopje. This means that JYSK is now represented in 32 countries with more than 1,350 stores– and more stores are opening each week.

The Macedonian market will be operated under a franchise agreement, which the Kosovo-Albanian owner, Fatmir Zymberi, is behind. He was also the man behind the opening of JYSK in Kosovo in February 2004 and, last November, he opened the doors to the first franchise store in Albania.

»This is yet another exciting day for JYSK and the opening in Macedonia is part of our ambition to move towards increasingly greater internationalisation. There is great potential in the countries in the Balkans and we have gained valuable experience from our store in both Kosovo and Albania. Although purchasing power is small, compared with European countries, we have great expectations for the Macedonian market, « says Frederik Kroun, Franchise Manager at JYSK.

Product range similar to that in Denmark

The first store is about 1,500 m2 with a range that has 90% of the products found in the Danish store. The store also has a warehouse of about 500 m2. 100,000 papers containing offers will be distributed in both Tetovo and Skopje in connection with the opening.

With this opening the JYSK enterprise, owned by Lars Larsen, is now represented in the following 32 countries. Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Netherlands, Slovakia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Iceland, Canada, Greenland, the Faeroe Islands, Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Spain, Kosovo, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Romania, France, Dubai, Albania, the United Kingdom, Slovenia and now Macedonia.

Quite a few similarities between the last two concerning their appearance...

I hope this is not a new mainstream style

I havent been in Vero Super Center yet. But I can say that location is very exclusive and some tall building is necessary... Maybe the chance is next to Vero or opposite to Vero that place is very huge!

The open style of this supermarket reminds me of one I saw in Ljubljana, Slovenia. It had the same thing where you could see it from the upper levels.

Is this type of layout popular in European countries?

It's pleasing to see these developments take place. I hate to nitpick but the interior of that Vero Centre looks rather underwhelming ("prosto") doesn't it? If you've gone to the trouble and expense of building such an impressive structure surely it couldn't be too much more trouble to adorn the walls (if nothing else) with something actually attractive rather than merely functional. Designers could simply copy examples from elsewhere in the world if they lack the imagination to come up with it themselves. Just sayin'.

Update: I visited Vero Center in Skopje and I can say I'm pretty impressed. Outside its just a ordinary but the whole space inside is very nicely indeed. I like it more than Ramstore in Skopje. Its much bigger and much wider as a complex. Anyway location is still question, maybe this kind of malls should be build at the suburbs. Anyway I'm happy that Skopje got this Center.
