Delhi's Heritage Structures

While scouting through flickr and other image sites, I always come across images of heritage sites scattered all over Delhi that haven't been properly showcased on SSC. This thread will be used for for showcasing all the heritage sites and structures in Delhi.

mini fort

Bada Gumbad
Bara-Gumbad mosque was built with ashlar stone. Its rectangular prayer-hall has five arched openings and is a fine example of the early Mughal mosques. The tapering minarets, built in the Tughluq style, colored tiles and Quranic inscriptions ornament this mosque. Built in 1494, this mosque was constructed during the reign of Sikandar Lodi.

Shish Gumbad

Shish Gumbad tomb is built in the usual square pattern, with a 'double-storied' appearance, and looks much like Bara Gumbad. Its ceiling has incised plasterwork, with floral patterns and Quranic inscriptions. One can still see the traces of the blue tiles that once adorned it and gave it the name of 'Glazed dome'. There are several graves inside it.

this lake used to be empty when I lived in Delhi. Now they've filled it up with water.

moving on..

Agrasen ki Baoli

from wiki:
Agersen ki baoli is a 60 meter long and 15 meter wide, step well on Hailey Road near Connaught Place. Its among few of its kind in Delhi. Some parts of well are permanently immersed in water. The visible parts of step well consists of three levels. Each level is lined with arched niches on both sides. From architectural perspective it considered tughlaq period. This complex might have been constructed by Agrawal community which traces its origin to Maharaja Agrasen.

Lightbulb

loads of bs. They'll stay as they are even after 2010. Delhi dont have that kind of will & determination. It'll be a miracle if they somehow get the games village done in time which has run into some serious legal trouble.

Najaf Khan's tomb - 17th century tomb lies next to the Safdurjung Airport flyover and was also recently restored.

He was a Persian adventurer but became the Deputy Wazir of Awadh and later the commander in chief of the Mughal army from 1772-1782. Virendra Sehwag's hometown of Najafgarh (south-west of Delhi) is named after this person.
