Not sure if it is arts per se, but I just posted something about Chicago's street light design.

Nice. I would say it counts as functional art.

Based on the internationally acclaimed novel by Arthur Golden, Memoirs of a Geisha is a sweeping romantic epic set in a mysterious and exotic world that still casts a potent spell today. The story begins in the years before WWII when a penniless child is torn from her family and forced to work as a maid in a geisha house, but eventually becomes one of the most celebrated geishas in Japan. These concerts will be recorded live in Orchestra Hall for a future release by Sony/BMG Masterworks.

At Symphony Center, on Friday:

Joanna Newsom

Friday
August 22, 2008, 7:30 p.m.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Joanna Newsom, harp and vocals
Ryan Francesconi, conductor

Joanna Newsom makes her Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Center debut. Joanna will perform songs from her CD Ys with orchestral arrangements by Van Dyke Parks, along with selections performed solo and with her band.

Joanna on Ys : “The goal I had in mind was for the harp and vocals to feel like they were developing unawares of the presence of the orchestra, unburdened by any of the self-consciousness/formality/austerity/stiltedness this might provoke....as if the orchestra is hanging in a hallucinatory shimmer around the more substantial harp and voice”

Benny Green Trio

image hosted on flickr

Jazz Showcase
47 W Polk St (at Dearborn St)
Chicago
312-360-0234
http://www.jazzshowcase.com/shows.html

When
Tonight through Sat 8 pm, 10 pm , Sun 4 pm, 8 pm, 10 pm.

Tickets: $10–$20

Oscar Peterson passed on only a few months ago, but for the past decade, he's had a disciple arguably outperform him. The bicoastal pianist Benny Green whittles down the overbearing influence of legends like Peterson, as well as Bud Powell and Phineas Newborn Jr., into immaculate bebop sculpture on a nightly basis. A prolific artist with a perpetually boyish visage, the 44-year-old bebop savant swings as hard as any of his more famous musical mentors.

Edward Wilkerson & 8 Bold Souls

Robert Guinan, "8 Bold Souls" - 1992, oil on canvas, 91.5 x 208

Velvet Lounge
67 E Cermak Rd (between Michigan and Wabash Aves)
Chicago
312-791-9050
http://www.velvetlounge.net

Tonight 8:30 pm

Tickets: $5-$15

For a time in the '90s, Ed Wilkerson Jr.'s 8 Bold Souls were more than just the AACM's flagship group—they were the jazz flagship for the city. While the quality has remained consistent, their performances are far too infrequent to keep a following. That makes this show, a prelude to their Jazz Fest appearance, a must for the curious. Bassist Harrison Bankhead, reedman Mwata Bowden, tubist Aaron Dodd, trumpeter Robert Griffin, trombonist Isaiah Jackson, cellist Naomi Millender and drummer Dushon Mosley join leader Ed Wilkerson Jr.

Greg Ward Quartet + Jimmy Bennington's Colour and Sound

Steve Eisen, Greg Ward, Carlos Vega

Uncommon Ground (Devon Location)
1401 W Devon Ave (at Glenwood Ave)
Chicago
773-465-9801
http://www.uncommonground.com

Tonight 9 pm

Tickets: donation $10

Rising Chicago saxophonist Greg Ward cut his teeth playing a soulful, eclectic repertoire in Ted Sirota's Rebel Souls. True to form, Ward can go into a similarly diverse repertoire (Afrobeat, blues, soul, bebop) while always maintaining a pungent, bluesy essence. Rob Clearfield on keys, Jeff Greene on bass and Quin Kirchner on drums round out his quartet.

Grazyna Auguscik & Paulinho Garcia

Paulinho Garcia and Grazyna Auguscik

Katerina's
1920 W Irving Park (between Wolcott and Damen Aves)
Lakeview/Roscoe Village/Wrigleyville, Chicago
773-348-7592

Tonight 8 pm

Tickets: $5

The chilled cabaret of Chicago-based Grazyna Auguscik deserves a spot next to Patricia Barber and Kurt Elling in the lineup of Chicago's most original jazz voices. In this heart-on-sleeve collaboration with Brazilian singer and guitarist Garcia, the music is breathlessly laid-back.

Made in Chicago: Celebrating Nat King Cole

Millennium Park, Pritzker Pavilion
205 E Randolph St (between Michigan Ave and Columbus Dr)
Chicago
312-742-7638
http://www.grantparkmusicfestival.com

Tonight 6:30 pm

Tickets: Free

The great Nat Cole doesn't get associated with the Chi quite like Al Capone, but this show should go some lengths toward redressing that tragic oversight. Cole grew up in Bronzeville and was one of a number of Capt. Walter Dyett's star pupils at DuSable High School before leaving for California. Jeff Lindberg's Chicago Jazz Orchestra pays tribute tonight with vocalist Audrey Morris and Nat's younger brother Freddy Cole.

The latest tile
Edgewater residents and the Chicago Public Art Group beautify Bryn Mawr.
By Philip Berger

Chicago Public Art Group, Growing 2008, 2008.
Photo: Philip Berger

http://www.timeout.com/chicago/artic...he-latest-tile

Excerpt:

Growing 2008 is highly accessible not just artistically, but physically. Completed this month, the bricolage—a tile mosaic that incorporates other materials, such as paint, mirrors and small sculptural elements—boasts a sophisticated composition, strong narrative and lively coloration, all enhanced by the quality of its execution. Yet you won’t find it at the Art Institute or the Museum of Contemporary Art: The mural covers the 185-foot expanse of Lake Shore Drive’s Bryn Mawr underpass.

While its companion mosaic, Living 2007—installed on the underpass’s north wall last summer—reflects the history of Chicago’s Edgewater community, Growing 2008 emphasizes Edgewater’s hope for the future. The project is sponsored by the Chicago Public Art Group (CPAG), which traces its history back to the city’s Wall of Respect. That mural, which depicted dozens of black heroes, including Muhammad Ali and Sarah Vaughan, was painted on a building at the corner of Langley Avenue and 43rd Street in 1967. Though demolished in 1973, the Wall of Respect inspired so-called activist or people’s art across the country. The movement’s community-generated, collaboratively executed murals enlivened the streetscapes of depressed urban neighborhoods...

Breakbone DanceCo.: DE-evolution of Mudwoman

Viaduct Theater
3111 N Western Ave (at Barry Ave)
Chicago
http://www.viaducttheatre.com/cms/in...tpage&Itemid=1
773-296-6024

Tonight–Tomorrow 9pm , Thu–Aug 30 9pm . Ongoing through Sep 6.

Tickets: $18, students and seniors $15

Meet Mudwoman. She’s the new “IT” girl. Watch as she de-evolves from a superficial poptart diva to the ultimate primordial woman. The twist is that even in her primal state she has more integrity and humanity than our current role models. Mudwoman’s “becoming” is a journey filled with irony, dry wit, human folly, and gorgeous decay. Her transformation affects all who are touched by her.

This new concert features work by award-winning choreographers Colleen Halloran and Atalee Judy and a duet created by former Hubbard Street Chicago dancer, Cheryl Mann.

DE-evolution of Mudwoman, directed by Atalee Judy, features 12 mud clad dancers, a virtuosic solo performance by Mindy Meyers as Mudwoman, high octane moves with Atalee Judy’s signature Bodyslam Technique, a couture fashion show by designer Branimira Ivanova, cinematic videography by Carl Wiedemann, and three “expositors” who enliven the evening with their charismatic correspondence. The traditional dance space is ruptured by these three onlookers who interpret, critique, judge, translate and witness Mudwoman’s de-evolution. One question arises: as Mudwoman reveals her inner woman, will they be transformed as well?
