Francesco Landini, the blind Florentine composer, poet, organist, singer and instrument maker, was one of the musical giants of fourteenth century. His innovative work brought us a giant step toward the music of the Renaissance, but it also painted a picture of the Italian society of his day. His song Ecco la Primavera celebrates the arrival of Spring, and on the first weekend of Spring we travel back to Landini's Florence with songs and dances of love and lust. This concert features Ellen Hargis, soprano, Judith Malefronte, mezzo-soprano, and Aaron Sheehan, tenor, with instrumentalists David Douglass, Tom Zajac, and violin virtuosa Rachel Barton Pine making her Chicago debut on two of the violin's quirky ancestors: vielle and rebec.

Chi Town Blues Festival

Saturday, Mar 14 9:00p
at Star Plaza Theatre, Merrillville, IN

Performers at this Event

Bobby "Blue" Bland

Bobby Bland earned his enduring blues superstar status the hard way: without a guitar, harmonica, or any other instrument to fall back upon. All Bland had to offer was his magnificent voice, a tremendously powerful instrument in his early heyday, injected with charisma and melisma to spare.

Shirley Brown

Born January 6, 1947, in West Memphis, the Browns moved to St. Louis, MO, when Shirley was very young. Cutting her teeth in church, at the age of ten, she earned a reputation in gospel circles throughout the city for delivering powerful solos.

Willie Clayton

As long as he's been recording (from 1969 through the 2000s), one might think that Willie Clayton is an old geezer. No way -- he was just past the age of 40 when he hit his commercial stride with a couple of blues-soul albums for Ace that sold well to the Southern market (where the two interrelated idioms have never been deemed mutually exclusive).

Bobby Rush

The creator of a singular sound which he dubbed "folk-funk," multi-instrumentalist Bobby Rush was among the most colorful characters on the contemporary chitlin circuit, honing a unique style which brought together a cracked lyrical bent with elements of blues, soul, and funk.

Theodis Ealey

Blues guitarist and bandleader Theodis Ealey is a Mississippi native who first learned to play the instrument when he was four years old, thanks to instruction from big brother Y.Z. Ealey, who is about a decade older.

Floyd Taylor

The mention of the name "Taylor" in any conversation about true R&B and Soul Music certainly brings to mind the Legendary Johnnie Taylor. And legendary he was, even in his own time.

DePaul Opera Theatre presents

Engelbert Humperdinck's
Hansel and Gretel

Eric Weimer, Musical Director
Harry Silverstein, Director

at DePaul's Merle Reskin Theatre in the South Loop
60 E. Balbo Drive, Chicago

Friday, March 13 7:30pm
Saturday, March 14 7:30pm
Sunday, March 15 2:00pm

Tickets range from $5-$25 and can be ordered online or by calling 312.922.1999.

Once upon a time a composer and his sister wrote a fairy tale opera based on a story by the brothers Grimm. With a grand score, two mischievous children and one awfully wicked witch, Hansel and Gretel has been enchanting children and adults alike for over 100 years.

Sung in English with a full orchestra, whimsical staging, and lavish costumes and sets, DePaul Opera Theatre’s production takes you along with Hansel and Gretel, through the shadowy forest to a house made entirely of candy.

Whether you’re new to opera or have been a subscriber for years, you’ll leave the theatre feeling “happily ever after.”

Recommended for audiences ages 8 to adult.

"I urge you to donate today."
-Moisés Kaufman, creator of THE LARAMIE PROJECT

"This is a space where youth can come and have so much love and support. This is a place for us to be heard"
- AFT youth artist

About Face Theatre, one of Chicago's leading LGBTQ institutions and the original home of Pulitzer-prizewinning I AM MY OWN WIFE, is in danger of closing.

To confront this immediate crisis, About Face has launched a national "FACE THE FUTURE" campaign to save the organization and ensure its future. The About Face Board of Directors is asking for immediate financial contributions in order to keep its doors open, staff paid, and the youth theatre program intact.

About Face Theatre creates exceptional, innovative and adventurous plays to advance the national dialogue on gender and sexual identity If About Face does not survive, the country will lose one of the few high-profile theaters making new work by and about the LGBTQ experience. The award-winning About Face Youth Theater serves queer youth by providing artistic experiences and leadership training.

In response to the economic downturn and significant debt, About Face has reduced its budget by over 30% by implementing staff and production cuts while also postponing our third show. This is the responsible action to take, but it is not enough. If you help us raise $300,000, we will solve our immediate crisis and build a foundation for ongoing financial health.

Donations can be made by clicking the link above, by calling 773-784-8565 or by mailing a check to:

1222 W. Wilson
2nd Floor West
Chicago, IL 60640

Artistic contributions are encouraged as well, as About Face organizes a web-based video forum for testimony on the importance of About Face Theatre, of mentoring queer youth, and the vital need for innovative artmaking in today's society. To participate, please email bonnie@aboutfacetheatre.com or call the AFT office.

The About Face Theatre season is hosted at the Center on Halsted

Ah! Ich habe deinen Mund geküßt,
Jokanaan.Ah! Ich habe ihn geküßt, deinen Mund,
es war ein bitterer Geschmack auf deinen Lippen.
Hat es nach Blut geschmeckt?
Nein? Doch es schmeckte vielleicht nach Liebe.
Sie sagen, daß die Liebe bitter schmecke.
Allein was tut's? Was tut's?
Ich habe deinen Mund geküßt, Jokanaan.
Ich habe ihn geküßt, deinen Mund.

Currently showing:

Muralla sobre lienzo
A Mural Work in Progress by Hector Duarte

Maestro Hector Duarte (b.1952) has been a leading muralist in the Chicago area since the 1980s. His early training at the Siqueiros Mural Workshop in Cuernavaca, México has had a fundamental impact on his artistic career as he continues to apply many of the Modern Art theories and social philosophies that emerged from the Mexican Muralist Renaissance. Visit this unique exhibition and witness Maestro Duarte at work, completing his 150 ft. mural. This work in progress also continues the Museum’s three-year commitment to immigrant-centered programming.

Exhibition runs through June 28, 2009
The Rubín and Paula Torres Gallery

For more information about the artist, please visit www.hectorduarte.com

Miradas
Mexican Art from the Bank of America Collection

Mexican Art from the Bank of America Collection is a unique survey of one of the most extensive private collections in the U.S. and Mexico and takes a close look at the paintings, prints, and photographs created over the past 80 years. The exhibition examines and celebrates work by artists on both sides of the U.S. - Mexico border, to reveal a variety of cultural aspects as they emerged in the years after the Mexican Revolution.

Exhibition continues through August 30, 2009

Chicago Figurativo
Prints selected from the NMMA Permanent Collection

Chicago is home to the largest population of Mexican Americans in the Midwest. Proof of their presence and the diversity of the city are no more apparent than in the Pilsen neighborhood and its surrounding communities. The NMMA would like its audience to experience a variety of figurative work by twelve Mexican American artists who have made Chicago their home. Our hope is that the viewer will deepen their understanding of Mexican identity from both sides of the border through the visual production of the selected artists, and how each one negotiates their way through the problematic and contradictory spaces in which they live, create and explore. It is paramount for the NMMA to preserve and exhibit their voices in a time when immigration and transnationalism are most relevant.

Exhibition continues through May 24, 2009.

In 2006, choreographer Winifred Haun and director-performer Dawn Marie Galtieri started a program called Circle in the Square: New Works in Dance Theatre. They wanted to create an incentive for a collective of artists from various genres to learn from one another by presenting dance, theater and performance art all on the same program.

Now Circle celebrates its three years by stepping onto a bona-fide stage for the first time. On Saturday 21, Circle appears at the Ruth Page Center for the Performing Arts, a comfortable black-box-style theater designed with dance in mind. “We’re putting a great deal more money into the performance this year,” Haun says. “We feel like this is a culmination of our work to date.”

Back in 2006, Circle debuted at Glade Hall, a church gymnasium in Logan Square. While Glade has a history as a performance venue, it is a far cry from a “real” stage: Theatrical lighting must be brought in, the floor is slippery, and sounds bounce off the glossy wood and echo between the basketball nets at both ends of the room.

In subsequent performances (Circle has since presented twice annually), the collective has performed in grand mansions in Oak Park. Historic Pleasant Home and the Cheney Mansion created opportunities for the Circle artists to set their works in beautiful interior spaces, and audiences could wander through several rooms and settings in one evening. However, it was never the mission of Circle to establish an ethos of site-specific work.

The artists also found that audience capacity was limited at the mansions, and not everyone could see the dances well. They considered adding more shows, but the venues had other events, such as weddings, competing for the space. “And Glade is also leased to the Park District for after-school programs,” Haun says.Because this weekend’s show is functioning partly as a retrospective of past Circles, many of the artists have reworked their pieces to take advantage of the venue’s amenities. “We’re really excited about this show at Ruth Page,” Haun says. “Especially because of the [theatrical] lighting, we can focus the audience’s eyes on specific moments, in a way that we couldn’t in the mansions or at Glade.”
