Two 16 foot tall skeletal wooden “mountains” elevated onto the ends of two separate stages invite audience members to ascend onto the stages and pull a rope that will gradually unite (and subsequetly destroy) the separate structures into one large mass...

Big Picture: A New View of Painting in Chicago
Through August 3, 2008

Excerpt:

Big Picture: A New View of Painting in Chicago offers a history of painting in the city by showcasing works ranging from the late-19th-century realist, satirical, and folk traditions to mid-20th-century expressionism and abstraction. Works selected for this exhibition include 49 pieces from the Museum’s own collection, and approximately 30 pieces on loan from private collectors.

Part of American Art American City, a city-wide American art initiative sponsored by the Terra Foundation for American Art, this exhibition draws from the Museum’s rarely displayed collection of historical paintings and explores several styles and subjects...

At Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art:

Sunday Painters: Discarded Paintings by Gifted Amateurs
Friday, July 11, 2008 – Saturday, January 03, 2009

Every year, Intuit presents an exhibition of recent gifts to its permanent collection. In 2007, Ricco/Maresca Gallery and Richard Rubenstein donated 25 thrift store paintings created by unknown amateur artists between 1940 and the late 1960s. Each painting represents the maker's attempt to communicate through art, ranging from surreal to banal, comically absurd to erotic. Presented at Intuit to an audience the artist may never have dreamed of reaching, they create a record of Americana and document an experience to which many can relate.

Free and open to the public.

Manifest Destiny/Manifest Responsibility: Environmentalism and the Art of the American Landscape
Through Sunday, August 10, 2008

Further, it invites viewers to examine the ecological, cultural, and spiritual aspects of their environmental footprints.

Seeing the City: Sloan's New York
Monday, July 07, 2008 – Sunday, September 14, 2008

John Sloan's images of New York helped define the city in the popular imagination. In gritty depictions of urban life, Sloan celebrated New York by focusing on street scenes, elevated trains, public spaces, and the lives of ordinary Americans. Displaying works from 1900 to the 1930s in various media, this exhibition maps Sloan's New York, locating the sites portrayed in his art and examining personal meaning tied to places he depicted again and again.

Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m.–8 p.m.; Saturday, Sunday 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Remember that July 18 will be the last day for:

“David Hockney: Looking at Woldgate Woods.”

Arts Club of Chicago
201 E Ontario (at N Saint Clair St)
Gold Coast/Mag Mile/Streeterville, Chicago
312-787-3997

Today–Fri 11am–6pm , Mon 11am–6pm . Ongoing through Jul 18.

David Hockney’s Looking at Woldgate Woods, a series of 10 paintings, is up for viewing at the Arts Club of Chicago, a nearly century-old private club where many world famous 20th c. avant-garde artists made midwest debuts (which means it doesn’t have to have a web presence).

tpe:

My intro to David Hockney's work so many years ago was through his deliciously poetic and sometimes provocative gay-themed Art. This Arts Club of Chicago exhibition allows us to enjoy another side of this Artist's output: the evocative landscape. If you are a lover of his work, be sure to see it.
