Vintage Murano Glass on the Block
By TIM McKEOUGH Published: May 30, 2012 ![]() http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/31/ga...tml?ref=garden Frank Toskan, a founder of MAC Cosmetics, spent about two decades amassing his collection of Murano art glass, and on June 9, Wright in Chicago will auction it off. “It really spans the entire 20th century, right up to some contemporary pieces,” said Richard Wright, the owner of the auction house. “It has a few super-rare, high-flying lots, but also a really uniform quality. They’re perfectly executed, or rare colors, or better than average examples the entire way through.” The auction will offer more than 150 pieces, including an orange and green intarsio vase by Ercole Barovier for Barovier & Toso from 1963 (estimate: $15,000 to $20,000), left, and a blue rilievi vase by Carlo Scarpa for Venini from 1935 (estimate: $30,000 to $40,000). Raising a Paddle for the Gio Pontis
By JULIE LASKY Published: December 5, 2012 ![]() http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/06/ga...tml?ref=garden On Dec. 13, Wright in Chicago will hold an auction of 20th-century Italian masterworks, with almost half of the pieces by Gio Ponti. “He is the overarching figure of Italian design,” said Richard Wright, the auction house owner, tracing that arc from the 1920s, when Ponti began his career as an architect, industrial designer and editor in Milan (he founded the Italian magazines Domus and Stile), to the 1970s, the last decade of his life. Many of the items are from Loris Manna, a Milanese collector who wrote a book in 2000 about Ponti’s work in majolica. Among the objects Mr. Manna is relinquishing is a circa 1955 bookcase, above, designed by Ponti with the artist Piero Fornasetti, its panels displaying trompe l’oeil illustrations of knickknacks and stacked volumes. The price is estimated at $50,000 to $70,000. Information: (312) 563-0020 or wright20.com. |
